Daytime temps are rising above 0c, the snow is round 1 meter deep and its getting heavy so wheeling conditions are tough. I expected a lot of digging, low tire pressures and possibly chains but a set of Maxtrax would have been a good investment. Maybe next time! I set out in the Jeep Cherokee XJ Diesel to find a winter camping location in the wilderness and test out my winter gear. I have modified the ARB 2500x2500 Awning Room and added a Diesel Heater to adapt it for winter conditions. It's a decent motor despite what some say. It just needs a few upgrades to make it reach its potential. To date, I've trussed , sleeved, and gusseted the d30. A trick Iearned years ago for putting on chains is to cut your self a small block of wood that you can drive up on and is tall enough to to get the tire above the surface. Before you drive up on the block, lay your chains out with the block set in between two of the horizonal tread chains. Drive up on the block and go about installing the chains. It give you enough slack under the tire to freely wiggle the chains into place as needed.

With a manual transmission in snow like that you need to do the "rocking" trick as soon as you get stuck. Never fully let the clutch out and allow wheels to spin. Simply let the tire rock and inch forward without spinning, and then back wards. Never letting the tire spin until you have a good 1-3' long patted down flat spot and then you can go for it lol
Thanks for the tips, I will give it a try next time we have some good snow. I've got some bead locks now with a fairly good winter tire that I let down to about 4psi so it should make for some better floatation. I've also regarded to 4.88 so I should be able to crawl slower. Anyway thanks again!

Can you drape a small lightweight tarp over the top of the awning as all you have a single skin roof might help a bit with heat retention and as others have said heat rises so you need to have a low entry for he night heater outlet hose
I could but I want to keep it simple. I've plumbed the heater in from the bottom and it recirculates the air these days and it makes a huge difference. Great video, cam angles on the truck were cool , was looking forward to seeing the set up in action when I saw the count down , something different . Hope you guys are well ,
I'd recommend trying to make a return air hose for the diesel heater with a Y join on it. If you can have say 70/30 split of return air from inside the awning room and 30% outdoor air which will have super low relative humidity it would likely take care of the moisture issue and run the heater more efficiently. Would just have to come up with a creative way of controlling the flow of outside air coming into the Y splitter.
Sounds like a good idea. Improved heating would be good for the little one. I'm looking into to insulated ducting at the moment so hopefully I can pick up a few meters and build something functional. Thanks for the idea 💡
Magical....I get that. Totally 👌 Brave attempt on that first track too! I think we'll miss the snow now by time we get out there but on the plus side I hope we see the long summer days instead. Hope you and fam are well too.
I'm lucky I didn't brake somthing on that first track. It's a lot of stress on the drive train components in such wet snow. Shame though as there is a nice camp spot at the end with a small lake. The snow certainly makes tame summer tracks more challenging. I will miss it for sure but I'm ready for summer now!! Family are well, the young man is walking more and more. Hope all is well your end mate?
@@WorkshoptoWilderness great fun when they start walking but need eyes in the back of your head then! Keen for this lockdown business to do one but otherwise all good here buddy, thanks.

Ive seen pics of welded half links on chains. They look brutal. Does it make a huge difference when driving in deep snow? I would love a second set of chains.
Have you tried a usb powered fan in the awning room? Placed in the upper corner along the wall, pointing down along the next wall, (to encourage the vortex air movement), might just do the trick and keep it warmer down low. Also helps with overall circulation and CO buildup... Great channel, BTW! Love that XJ
I've used that method. It's very efficient on the pheasants I use to shoot back home. Ive not tried it on smaller grouse but I will give it a try next time. Thanks for watching
На 27:15 минуте,вы положили большой ящик с инструментами под сиденье. Но там почти нет места! покажите как изменили нишу под задним сиденьем,мне тоже так надо!
would like to see/hear how those padded blocks you were going to use as a floor are working out...and which ones did you buy...and how did that heater work in keeping the awning room warm....
I will be heading out again soon although the winter is over now so no heater required. The foam tiles arrived although I need may more to complete the whole room. It will make a huge difference though once I have all of them. Heater was amazing to be honest, a game changer for colder nights. I will certainly be using it when temps dropp off again in October/November.
I've got a video on how to build it if you take a look on the channel page. I could send a link but I'm on my phone at work. Its a small diesel heater. They are quite efficient and use very little fuel and produce a lot of heat. My setup in this video is pretty crap because the heater is pushing heat into the top and taking cold air from outside. This is good for low condensation but bad for warmth. It's better if it recirculated the air from the tent.
I've certainly thought about it for longer family travels. I'm trying to stay fairly light and simple but with the possibility of more children I fear that's impossible. Thanks for watching
Hes long gone mate so he wont be around in any videos sadly. I don't think I will be getting another,, the baby is a keeping me busy! Thanks for watching.
I have to give you a bit of a hard time about your “glamping” setup..:) i remember your videos from back in the day where you went out with a little backpack and a fixed blade knife. Great video man, thanks for the upload. Looking forward to some hunting videos this summer..:)
I expect many who migrate over from the other channel will. Its a shame really but I guess its to be expected given I've put myself online for ten plus years. I still bivi camp, hike, fish and make fires most weeks but filming these things hasn't been a priority and it's more of a lifestyle rather than a video worthy event that would almost rob the simplicity of it all. Anyway I'm sure you get it and I know your just joking, I guess I'm just tired of the expectation. Thanks for watching.
great job mike,,,,,,,,,,,,i think a lot of people wonder like i do what you do for work,,,,,,,,are you a mechanic ? in sweden? or a teacher of a sort ?
Proper job! :) Loving 1440p60, especially for the outside jeep shots, underneath the sills, seeing the suspension move etc. - great stuff! I'm stil amazed you don't have 10x more subs, but hey quality over quantity :D A couple of questions please: 44:35 your jeep run with the keys out..? (I had am old Saab 9-3 that did that but it was down to wear, not by design.) And have you considered piping the warm air into the awning lower down so that the heat reaches people before rising to the ceiling? Cheers!
Thanks mate, It was good fun to film. Ever since I had issues with the ignition barrel the keys can come out and the engine will still run. Perhaps its wear or maybe just poor design. Pumping the heat lower down is certainly a better solution. It just requires a longer insulated duct that can drop down and run into the vent at the side. I will certain do that but I just need a better duct. Thanks again for watching and for comments on the videography!
A wabbit wan out in front of my Triumph Bonneville and was instantly killed. I threw him over the handlebars, brought him home & made a stew. I love free food!
Great video, first I've seen. Now I need to set some time aside to watch your others. I assume the Grouse in Sweden are similar to the ones in Canada. Just step on the wings, breast facing you, grab the legs and pull up. Easiest animal on the planet to clean.
Thanks for watching! Hopefully you like the others. I think they are, they are certainly similar to what I use to shoot back home and I always stood on the wings when de-breasting like you described. This one was a bit broken for it I feared.
I think they are better than the ARB ones in design. Its EzyAwn isnt it? They look a bit stronger in the front and have a tensioner. I don't think they get bad reviews and most seem to be pretty happy with them. Thanks for watching.
@@benbroccoli89 I personally really like the awning for overlanding. You could drop the weight and just string up a tarp as an outdoor cover but the awning is faster to setup and its pretty tough in the wind which I like. Its nice to have an outdoor space out of rain or sun to sit, eat or relax. The awning room is kind of essential for us here due to the mosquitos. Having a place to just be away from flies and have the windows open in the summer is really nice. As much as I've bivi camped and put up with bugs for years, enduring discomfort wears me down over longer trips. I would personally recommend an awning as they re out the way most of the time until you need them.
Also, you set all that up for 1 night? This almost 60 old guy puts all that gear out,and I'm staying for a few days, that's too much damn work for 1 night! Youngsters,go Fiqure!!🤔🤔🤣🤣👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸😁
Haha, for me it's not a big deal. This was kind of a test of the setup. If I was next to a lake then I would probably be ice fishing for a couple of days for sure. Thanks for watching
What diff-locks are your running? Proper lockers or the standard diff-slip? Makes a big difference in the Swedish snow imho as the "automatic" ones are set for better traction.
Lmao! bro you buried it immediately. You have a standard transmission there's no excuse for that. Next time take it slow on approach and when your tries start to slip fuck the clutch. That is to say use the clutch amd light throttle to rock the truck back and forth until you gain traction again. That's snow wheeling 101, throttle is your enemy. Any time your tire slips for any amount of time, that tire is digging.
I think its ideal but it all depends on what line of life you come from. 160hp. 400 Plus nm torque, 27 to 31mpg is basically perfect for a 2 ton fully loaded Jeep for long range touring, offroad work and camping. A 5.9 is just far too big for this small jeep, thirsty and too expensive. I for one need to regear which will help put me back inline with where I need to be power wise but for now she's got plenty of power and I have no complaints, after all its me in the driver seat, not you. Thanks for watching.
Well I thought I Wednesday evening was a good time and 24 hours notice may give people who are locked down something to look forward to. Hopefully it's worth it!
Daytime temps are rising above 0c, the snow is round 1 meter deep and its getting heavy so wheeling conditions are tough. I expected a lot of digging, low tire pressures and possibly chains but a set of Maxtrax would have been a good investment. Maybe next time!

Sounds like a good idea. Improved heating would be good for the little one. I'm looking into to insulated ducting at the moment so hopefully I can pick up a few meters and build something functional. Thanks for the idea 💡
Verry good trip sir
Your Rig sounds like an Old Masey Ferguson Tractor, Ya Better give that farmer his Tractor engine Back, as he is having a hard time plowing the old Fashioned way!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yeah its basically an agricultural engine. They use them in tractors, smaller ones with no turbo.
Love the camera angles!!
You should build a second Cherokee for when Meg/Maxcome along. Would be nice to see a convoy.. :)
Whe has a 1996 zj I'm working on at the moment. I want to lift it and put some 35s on it but we will see!
I am a "welded half link tire chain guy" ...it's all i will run... i run 4 studded , and carry both 4 cables and 4 chains.
Ive seen pics of welded half links on chains. They look brutal. Does it make a huge difference when driving in deep snow? I would love a second set of chains.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness absolutely better, mostly on ice but way better.
Superb video Mike! Thanks for sharing.
Who ever came up with slept like a baby, obviously never had one 😂
Have you tried a usb powered fan in the awning room? Placed in the upper corner along the wall, pointing down along the next wall, (to encourage the vortex air movement), might just do the trick and keep it warmer down low. Also helps with overall circulation and CO buildup... Great channel, BTW! Love that XJ
beautiful jeep and those decals ;) lol
Dinner!!!
I like the XJ and enjoy watching your vids!
Have you ever dressed a Grouse by stepping on the wings and pulling the feet? Works great!👍🏽
I've used that method. It's very efficient on the pheasants I use to shoot back home. Ive not tried it on smaller grouse but I will give it a try next time. Thanks for watching
Thoroughly enjoyable video as always, thanks Mike.
На 27:15 минуте,вы положили большой ящик с инструментами под сиденье. Но там почти нет места! покажите как изменили нишу под задним сиденьем,мне тоже так надо!
I made a hole under the seat and the tool box becomes a part of the seat. I will make a video about it for you. Thanks for watching
@@WorkshoptoWilderness спасибо. жду. хочу сделать под сиденьем нишу для второго аккумулятора
would like to see/hear how those padded blocks you were going to use as a floor are working out...and which ones did you buy...and how did that heater work in keeping the awning room warm....
What heater is that and what show did u do the set up really need one great show love my xj as well
I've got a video on how to build it if you take a look on the channel page.
I wish they had a diesel option in NA.
Hey Mike, have you thought about a small off road trailer? You could built up a pretty nice one...
I've certainly thought about it for longer family travels. I'm trying to stay fairly light and simple but with the possibility of more children I fear that's impossible. Thanks for watching
Mr. MCQ, I wanted to ask you about your dog. How is he doing and will we see him in future vids?
I'm stil amazed you don't have 10x more subs, but hey quality over quantity :D
A couple of questions please: 44:35 your jeep run with the keys out..?
Gave you the like because you actually prepared the bird you accidentally killed instead of burying it or something
Was a good meal, can't let that go to waste. Thanks for watching and for the like!
@@WorkshoptoWilderness I bet. Checked out some of your other videos too, quality content. Subscribed
A wabbit wan out in front of my Triumph Bonneville and was instantly killed. I threw him over the handlebars, brought him home & made a stew. I love free food!
Amazing rig.
What does rig really means?
Well, I like the floor setup over climbing the roof tent.
I honestly don't know without googling it so I wont pretend I do lol. Its caught on with me, the word rig. Thanks for watching.
Rig : Special equipment or gear used for a particular purpose. There are other meanings, but thus one is for trucks and OffRoads
Love it, if you guys ever make across the pond to Colorado I’ll take you up in #berserkerXj.
Great adventure! Thinking about the 2000 series awning for my Jimny...Would you recommend?
I think they are better than the ARB ones in design. Its EzyAwn isnt it? They look a bit stronger in the front and have a tensioner. I don't think they get bad reviews and most seem to be pretty happy with them.
Thanks for watching.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness i meant same as yours in the 2m variant. Do you find an awning a valuable bit of kit for overlanding? Cheers
Love the vids. I have the same awning room and want to get a duffel to replace the stuff sack it came with. What size duffel did you pick up? Cheers
Whooooot whooooot
Open diff at the front and a standard limited slip at the back. Nothing special as of yet.
What kind of roof rack is that?
Its a Frontrunner slimline 2.
Lmao! bro you buried it immediately.
👍👍👍
❤👍👍👍
you def need a bigger motor , from the sound it def seam you are lacking hours power , need to find a 5.9 Cummings
Lockers?
No lockers yet.
your muffler is sideways
Gangster mate
My like 777 😂👌🏻
24 hours?!?! Y u do dis Mike?
Well I thought I Wednesday evening was a good time and 24 hours notice may give people who are locked down something to look forward to. Hopefully it's worth it!
I am sure it will be worth it. Looking forward to it! 😁
