You got some lucky kids.... and they got a great dad. My father let me have a mini bike at 10, my first 100cc dirt bike a couple yrs later, then a 250cc Ossa, 750 Honda, and it never stopped. He had no interest, but knew i'd drooled over bikes since i was old enough to prove reincarnation was real. He had no mechanical skills, but God love him he always inspired us to try...

If i was to make a monster bike i'd use a Big red 250cc. Use the same engine/trans, shocks front and rear, some how i'd make it so it would have back brakes (if there's enough room), rear brake light. etc. but over all very nice clean build. Well done.

Besides, several companies already tried these types of bikes and didn't sell too many of them. I was fascinated with fat tire bikes for a while but couldn't find any reasonably priced so decided to make my own. Our next project will have suspension and bigger engine. The original gas tank was sitting outside for too long and had a rusted out hole at the bottom. it would of took lots of effort and money to fix it. wasn't worth my time. Besides, when a fuel sits inside a gas tank, it goes bad. i would rather refill small gas tank with fresh fuel every 3 hours of use than let it sit for months in the big tank. Its just my take in this issue but i'm sure others would not agree with me.

Kevin N Those folks who give thumbs down probably hate to see a trike frame get hacked instead of restored to original condition which is totally understandable. It really needs a rear brake. A earlier comment of using a disk on the jackshaft is a good idea. Thats how they do it on lawnmowers. Over all very informative, good video.

Nice project. I did a similar drive train setup on a Puma 200 trail bike and really like it. TAV works great - looks like you have the gearing about perfect and a muffler on it for quiet. Do appreciate the way you involved your son in the fabrication and riding aspects. He'll always remember that.
I really appreciate this video. I've never really liked three-wheelers but I've always really liked trail bikes. This is the first interesting potential project I've seen done in a while. What a nicely done Big wheel. I bought my lady a little baja mini bike to learn on, and saw a little 3 wheeler beat up sitting at her mothers house. I imagined this build in my head, and here we are. I was hoping you came up with a simpler off-the-shelf hub for the rear end that did all the stuff I needed
B Curtis Fabricating a rear hub with disk brake would of been an ideal choice but at the time when I was working on this project I was cutting too many corners to wrap it up sooner than later. You can make your bike so much better by fabricating a swing arm and a rear hub with disk brake. Good luck, thanks for watching and commenting.

The gas tank was very rusty inside so i decided not to invest time and money into cleaning it. One gallon gas tank on the motor is enough to give us about 2 hours of play time. Thanks for commenting and checking out our video.
Very well done, looks like it came from a factory. My only suggestion would be to fabricate a chain guard between the jack shaft and rear wheel, if someone's pants leg gets tangled in the chain it could cause serious injury.

Its awsome to see your son involved and the skill he has to ofter to have to say keep up the great work. Yes sir, sometimes i search for parts on ebay as well when i need something specific. Lucky for me these 3 wheelers in my area are cheap and previous owners gladly sell them to clean out their garage.One time i was looking for front tire axle bolt but on ebay people were asking anywhere between 50 to 100 bucks. Found a whole rolling chassis for 50 bucks and still had lots of parts left over. All in all, these conversions are definitely unique and much sturdier than any cheap chinese bikes out there.

I am finally getting ready to start my 3-wheeler to monster mini-bike conversion late this month. I am a seasonal welder and have full access to my shop after work. I plan to finish it by then end of my season for my companies hunting trip. Problem is finding a good 3-wheeler in my area is rather difficult. First thing is to make it run while its still stock and then start tearing it down. I plan to hopefully fabricate full rear swing arm with tandem rear wheels and a large rack over the rear tires. Also have plans to make a track to fit over the rear tandem tires and a ski that can strap the the front for winter fun here in Alaska.

I've got a Baja Doodle Bug with a Predator 212 and TAV, and I've got some old who-knows-what I picked up for $200 that looks sorta like your bikes -- fat tires, big beefy frame, real handlebars... mine's got a springer front fork and wide springer seat, ratty B&S 5.5 (for now) and sticky clutch lol... fired up first pull though, Craigslist mystery toy FTW!!! keep up the cool shtuff guys!!!

When your son grows up and you grow old, he will remember that you took the time to build something with him and the quality time you spent together is something that no amount of money in the world could buy. He'll remember that you didn't take the easy way out and just buy something, and the life lessons he learned will probably be handed down to his son (if he gets one, but you seem to be a pretty cool dad, so he'll probably have kids too.). I personally would prefer having such a bike over something that was just bough and anyone who says otherwise is just jealous. Keep being a good dad, the world is in such short supply!
Blank Slate This setup was perfect for a teen/kid sized person but with a swap of rear sprocket this thing can probably do some climbing. For the size of the frame and tires it was underpowered. Ideally you would want a bigger engine if you are planning on climbing steep hills. Good luck.

sabrom Thanks for your kind words but there were several companies who unsuccessfully tried to sell fat tires bikes. Manco, Yerfdog, Cheetah 250cc powered by Tecumseh and i think coleman just to name a few. Kids these days like to go fast but with these fat tires on the bike it's only good for trails. I always wanted a bike with fat tires but couldn't find one that was in good running condition. You can patent this bike if you like but for rider safety reasons i'm out.

+Devin Perry Yes sir, the entire build was cheap. This bike came out to roughly $350. From getting all the parts to welding and painting the frame it took me about a month to make this bike. Bought rolling chassis for $50 and sold rear rack for $50 as well as rear axle for $50 which lowered/offset the cost of the bike. Motor was $100 bucks and 30 series torque converter was $85 on eBay, handle grips $17, paint and primer around $30, rear sprocket $20, seat $25, jackshaft $65 and tires for free from my other parted out 3 wheeler. As far as tubing goes, I got it at Home Depot 1/2 inch pipe (needed just one $12). it might not be the prettiest bike on the block but it sure is a monstrosity that gets heads turning.
+allritythen It took me about a month to make it but in retrospect it wasn't hard at all. Project goes faster and smoother if you have all your parts on hand and ready to go. You should make a bike with your son. Memories are priceless.

You could put a small disc brake rotor on your jackshaft, and have a rear brake too. It looks great to me. Very clean.

Great build , lacks suspension. You can compensate by running very low pressure in those big tires! Excellent memories with your son.

Found a whole rolling chassis for 50 bucks and still had lots of parts left over. All in all, these conversions are definitely unique and much sturdier than any cheap chinese bikes out there.

Tomorrow i'm going to pick up another rolling chassis for $50 bucks. I don't understand why people get bent out of shape when they see modified or hacked up trike. Most of the ones I've worked on were pile of junk anyways. I'm basically giving them another shot at life. Cheers

I am finally getting ready to start my 3-wheeler to monster mini-bike conversion late this month. I am a seasonal welder and have full access to my shop after work. I plan to finish it by then end of my season for my companies hunting trip.
Problem is finding a good 3-wheeler in my area is rather difficult. First thing is to make it run while its still stock and then start tearing it down. I plan to hopefully fabricate full rear swing arm with tandem rear wheels and a large rack over the rear tires. Also have plans to make a track to fit over the rear tandem tires and a ski that can strap the the front for winter fun here in Alaska.

Shipping kills costs. I'll find one for the price I want to pay eventually. IF it doesn't happen in the next month it will over the winter. I will still have access to the shop when needed :-)

I've got a Baja Doodle Bug with a Predator 212 and TAV, and I've got some old who-knows-what I picked up for $200 that looks sorta like your bikes -- fat tires, big beefy frame, real handlebars... mine's got a springer front fork and wide springer seat, ratty B&S 5.5 (for now) and sticky clutch lol... fired up first pull though, Craigslist mystery toy FTW!!! keep up the cool shtuff guys!!!

Glad you liked it. Some people might say that I've spent all this time and effort into this bike when i could of bought similar bike from the store. Maybe so but i wanted to build, weld, paint, and put it all together with my kid. Hopefully we will inspire more people to build something out of junk. When your son grows up and you grow old, he will remember that you took the time to build something with him and the quality time you spent together is something that no amount of money in the world could buy. He'll remember that you didn't take the easy way out and just buy something, and the life lessons he learned will probably be handed down to his son (if he gets one, but you seem to be a pretty cool dad, so he'll probably have kids too.). I personally would prefer having such a bike over something that was just bough and anyone who says otherwise is just jealous.
Keep being a good dad, the world is in such short supply!

This setup was perfect for a teen/kid sized person but with a swap of rear sprocket this thing can probably do some climbing. For the size of the frame and tires it was underpowered. Ideally you would want a bigger engine if you are planning on climbing steep hills. Good luck.

Thanks for your kind words but there were several companies who unsuccessfully tried to sell fat tires bikes. Manco, Yerfdog, Cheetah 250cc powered by Tecumseh and i think coleman just to name a few. Kids these days like to go fast but with these fat tires on the bike it's only good for trails. I always wanted a bike with fat tires but couldn't find one that was in good running condition. You can patent this bike if you like but for rider safety reasons i'm out.

Yes sir, the entire build was cheap. This bike came out to roughly $350. From getting all the parts to welding and painting the frame it took me about a month to make this bike. Bought rolling chassis for $50 and sold rear rack for $50 as well as rear axle for $50 which lowered/offset the cost of the bike. Motor was $100 bucks and 30 series torque converter was $85 on eBay, handle grips $17, paint and primer around $30, rear sprocket $20, seat $25, jackshaft $65 and tires for free from my other parted out 3 wheeler. As far as tubing goes, I got it at Home Depot 1/2 inch pipe (needed just one $12). it might not be the prettiest bike on the block but it sure is a monstrosity that gets heads turning.

Some people go to vocational classes to learn how to weld but i decided to learn on my own by welding these junk bikes out of scrap metal.

It took me about a month to make it but in retrospect it wasn't hard at all. Project goes faster and smoother if you have all your parts on hand and ready to go. You should make a bike with your son. Memories are priceless.
