Three Honda Three Wheelers to Fat Bike Conversions in One

  • This was a crazy 3 month project. A friend of my brother dropped of parts of five parts trikes and asked me to make him one good fat tired motorcycle. My brother and I could keep the rest and do whatever we wanted with them. We were able to make three bikes and keep one as a good three wheeler. It was an interesting challenge for sure. Most of the planning was in my head. The post it note in the video was about 1/3 of my drawings for the whole process. There was a lot of measuring involved and a whole lot of lathe work. The bikes are two 200x's and a 200s. They are all a blast to ride. The S is more compact and has a lot less suspension. They all climb like goats. The X's jump great. All in all we are all super happy with them. One of my favorite things is the jackshaft mounted on the swingarm pivot point on the S. Some of the other things just fell into place like the fact that the rear drum on the S fits so perfectly in the wheel. We have had a couple bearing failures in the jackshaft "spools". I believe we have that completely solved by stuffing them full of sealed bearings rather than just having them on the ends.

      Are you the one who bought the 200s? Even though that was the smallest one and had the least suspension it was my personal favorite! I’m glad you are enjoying it.

      I asked my brother if he still had his 200x conversion.. He said he just traded it away. That one seemed like it may have been more your style.

      I ended up doing some mods to the harbor freight motor and clutch setup. It is startlingly quick. It will stand straight up if you aren’t ready. I hit 47mph with it once on flat ground. My brother who is in the video has it now. I sold the spare motor to help fund finishing these up.

    Did you had to cut any parts I want to maintain original parts ?

      I modified the orange bike’s frame. The 200x frames were untouched. I used part of an original damaged swing arm for one bike and built the other swing arm on the last bike from scratch. I also cut up original axle parts for the wheel hubs. You can do this this from scratch as well. I was just using what I had.
      The answer is that yes, it can be done without modifying the original parts if you want to.

      I wish I had some blueprints to give you. Most of my measurements were just written on post it notes. I think the rectangular tubing was 1” x 2” and pretty thick walls. I want to say .1” or thicker. The jack shaft and rear axle for the “hub” was 1” bar. You can buy a go-kart axle. That way the bearings and spacers etc will be easy to find. The tubing on the hub for the rear wheel was purchased from onlinemetals.com. I bought it with a slightly smaller inside diameter than the outside of the bearings so they could be machines for a press fit.
      The bushings for the swing arm pivot were bronze bushings I picked up at ace hardware and then lightly machined them to fit the tubing I had purchased for that part. I don’t remember the size.
      I hope this info along with the pictures on the video is enough to get you started. I had even more fun building the bikes and solving all the engineering puzzles involved than riding them. They were a blast. I needed space and someone else is enjoying them now so I can’t go measure anything.

    How'd you make the rear axle on the first bike? I'm attempting a similar project.

      All of my pictures are at the beginning of the video. I basically took the apart the original rear axle with a hydraulic press and then machined the inside of the parts to fit onto the DOM tubing. The center hub portion was cut out on a lathe to fit the tubing as well. It was all then welded on the lathe to get even welds and to make sure things were mounted and welded “true”.

      No, I ended up selling that motor to help fund other projects. I did however hop up the gote motor though… It is able to better than 47mph and pulls wheelies unless you are trying not to.

      Thanks! We had thought about it a little. We have been asked a few times about kits. The problem with a kit is that it could only work on one specific machine unless we made kits for multiple machines. I don’t know if there would be enough people interested in converting 30-40 year old machines into motorcycles to be worth while.
      The reason we documented these builds with so many pictures was to help people build their own by showing what is involved in doing this to two completely different style bikes.

      200 = chain drive, pull start
      200s = chain drive, pull start
      200m = chain drive, pull and electric start
      200e = chain drive, pull and electric start, hi-lo sub. trans., factory racks
      200es = shaft drive, pull and electric start, hi-lo-reverse sub. trans., factory racks

      You are correct. That bike was my brother’s (rider in the video). He swapped the motor on that one for a motor off a Chinese 250cc four wheeler. The reverse is fun and we actually use it often.

      I was going to put the old x motor on the tote gote in the last picture but ended up selling the motor to help fund the builds.

      Like a mountain goat crossed with a Cadillac. It’s plush! It will go anywhere. The 200x versions will ride wheelies in the snow and all of them ride on sand as if it were asphalt.

      Thanks. I am not offended. I was given this trailer load of stuff. I was able to make these three for less than the cost of one fat cat, and I’m a sucker for a challenge.
