Because new furniture costs more but if you have 10 year old furniture, better to buy new. $4,000 is definitely unnecessarily high. Say you buy a used van, or truck. It will costs $500 or so to register it. Once you're done with it then you can just sell it used. Small stuff like personal stuff, clothing you can just put in your personal car. If your furniture is old you can just leave it behind or sell it off.

You can buy a used rv for less than the cost of a mover. You can live in the rv while you look for a new home and job! That't what I did.

@Shawn Roseman well you'd have to look at what you have. Furniture is the largest thing to move. $1,500 is borderline to move. Because new furniture costs more but if you have 10 year old furniture, better to buy new. $4,000 is definitely unnecessarily high. Say you buy a used van, or truck. It will costs $500 or so to register it. Once you're done with it then you can just sell it used. Small stuff like personal stuff, clothing you can just put in your personal car. If your furniture is old you can just leave it behind or sell it off.

Back in 2000, my family got a 2 story 3 bedroom 3 bathroom comfortable middle class house in Chino Hills for something like a cool $280,000. I don't even want to think about what that house would go for now.
I moved just over 3 years ago. U haul was going to cost around $4000. I bought a cargo trailer for 6000 and just recently sold it for 5000.

The people that are leaving are not sending money back to pay the taxes on the property that they were unable to sell in California before they left and or abandoned. This means that the counties and or California state goverment are going to sell these properties for pennies on the dollar at auction. That is what will ultimately destroy California. I wish it wasn't like that but that is the real economic reality for Californians. I am not saying vote Republican just don't vote for Socialist or Communist leadership.
