Oh wow I honestly didn't expect you to take Sleep Token well, let alone listen to them cause I seemed to have mistakenly assumed they weren't really your style. I haven't listened to everything from them but from what I gathered about them it is actually an entire overarching story about the singer (Vessel) being visited by a goddess named Sleep and all their songs are said to be proof of devotion to the goddess. Other things I saw was that it's a love story between Vessel and the goddess, but again I'm not as crazy of a fan as most for them, I just like their songs a lot and looking for their meaning is a fun pass time. Thank you for reacting to it and if you have more taste for them, Euclid is another one of my favorites. Or i saw another person say listen to them all, both are good options. Im currently looking for time to listen to everything myself.

As a hardcore fan since the release of Telomeres for TPWBYT, who has listened to their entire discography in order enough times to lose count, I HIGHLY recommend starting from the very beginning and working your way down in release date order. Thank me later when you're done. Break it into an album a day if you need to, but the first two EPs, their few singles in-between albums, and the deluxe covers & singles from Sundowning will be easy to mix in with that also (you HAVE to include the singles, including the Hey Ya cover!)
I genuinely mean it, release date order, the ENTIRE discography. Pick up a month of Tidal's CD HiFi tier for $10 before you start if you have a decent sound setup (anything that isn't Bluetooth will work just fine, even your car stereo if it has AUX or USB audio)
I can even help make sure your Windows or whatever settings are setup properly to support playing the better quality - or, if you use Android with a USB-C to AUX adapter, that will work with the Tidal app too, it will request permission to control the USB so it can raise the settings of it
EDIT: Tidal's CD HiFi tier is $10/mo, I'm subscribed to their studio master tier for $20/mo because I've been writing a cool thing called libremedia that supports logging in with Tidal :P

There is a narrative woven through their music but honestly nobody knows exactly what it is other than the emotions it evokes. 🙃 It's all very metaphorical and can be viewed through many different perspectives so I think it's all to be taken however you want. But they do love puzzles. So it lends itself to an attempt to put the pieces together and realizing that everyone ended up with a different picture, even if we all started with the same pieces. The band doesn't talk or do interviews about meaning or plot, and since they're anonymous we are only left with the content itself, which may be the point. It's a mystery that doesn't really exist to be decisively solved. They're like a liminal space in musical form.

His split from his ex girlfriend, likely in large part due to a car crash.

    • @beelzbop
      @beelzbop 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@DioThermidor Wow. And if I was a casual listener and didn't want to dig beyond the anonymity and would rather take the material as intended? I am "actually" familiar with the lyrics (and backstories) and unless Vessel were to ever tell us exactly what it means it's arrogant to assume your interpretation is the only correct one. There are those that believe the car crash is a metaphor for their entire relationship and not a literal car crash, as well as Eden being an idea or state of being and not an actual place.

This is an excellent place to start your sleep token dive. TMBTE is a seminal song that gives you a true taste of the band. They laugh at genre and have many influences including Jazz. I would highly encourage you to go from the beginning and listen in chronological order. Like the other comment says, there is a general narrative and/or trend to the songs. Each of their albums is a concept piece and they fit together well as a whole trilogy. Even their eps are significant. Frankly their lore is deep and cryptic. I don't subscribe to it and think that most of the lyrics are relationship centered. Good luck and enjoy the unique music!

The mix noises you liked at the beginning are very similar with a lion's roar and whale sounds.
Sleep token are quite lyrically heavy and themes (like bitting and teeth) repeat through out their discography.
In here he says "grow back your sharpest teeth, you know my desire", "come now bite through this wires" and "I don't know what has its teeth in me but I'm about to bite back in anger". These "teeth" are hurting him but also have the power to release him from "captivity".
It can get quite deep but I guess the main point is for you to find the meaning you want in their music and lyrics. This meaning should be based on your life experiences and what you need to hear as they are vague for this reason and the band will probably never elaborate on their lore.
Enjoyed your reaction, looking forward to more ❤

You should react to the song "Blood Sport" The room below version. It's just Vessel and his piano pouring out his soul. Amazing.
What I've learned about about Sleep Token is that yes, there's a deep story about Vessel and Sleep.... but there's a backstory there that comes from his life. I don't know exactly what has happened to him but all the emotions he sings with are very real and the songs lyrics are written so well. I'm addicted. Some other songs on the new album to check out: Rain , Ascentionism and Apparition.
For older songs: Blood Sport (room below), Hypnosis, Alkaline, and Higher.

I think it’s about the life and death of a living soul. The soul dies by drowning in the beginning as his weightlessness in the Crystal waters begins to recede . As his buoyancy during life leaves him, and death takes hold, and he sinks to the bottom. I think the middle section of the song is about life, and the disappointments there in that have taken him from his beautiful Eden, and at the end once he realizes death, which has taken hold of him, won’t let him go, and he screams out to God that he just wants to go back to his beloved Eden.

The interpretation of talking to God, although possible, is unlikely in the UK. Most of the UK are apathetic about religion, we don't really have the same Christian culture here. That, of course, doesn't mean that it can't speak to YOU in those terms, and that's the fantastic thing about music. We all hear our own reflections among the noise.
