    When I do my reaction videos I don't press pause because I don't want to interrupt the natural flow of the music as it was originally intended by the artist. I try to vocalise my thoughts in real time as I listen to the song, and then summarise my reaction afterwards.
    Please do recommend songs or other artists for me to checkout in future by commenting on this video! I'm constantly on the lookout for great new music and things I've never heard before.

    love that II is getting the recognition he deserves. I remember when you started posting Sleep Token reactions and you always spoke highly of him, and the dude only got better since then

      Yes my dude! As a drummer, ever since I first heard ST way back in the day his talent just sledgehammered through the music. It's so great to see him getting all this very well deserved attention. Drummers everywhere have a lot to learn from him.

    Another commenter somewhere pointed out how relaxed he looks despite how busy his drumming is, it's really impressive.

      @SteveOGRock  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      Yes indeed! Very conservative with his arm movements and only using lots of energy when the orchestration requires big jumps between far away cymbals really. Great technique.

      My brother in law who is a drummer told me once a good drummer doesn't need to be all over the place and nervous. The economy of movement is key. Tell me if II does that. I am just here to worship.

    I’m obviously not a drummer, but when he explained his style with ‘phrases, vocabulary’, like his drumming is his voice, it 100% made sense, and is such a cool way to explain his thought process with writing and playing. Such a good video

    As a non-drummer (and really, not great at music in general) I find it so fascinating to watch drummers react to II! Just watching him play he always looks like he's conducting a one-man symphony which is hypnotizing. Your reactions tell me which parts to look at again and notice things that completely flew over my head! I feel like I get a new appreciation for just how awesome he is each time!

    II is just an incredible human. He’s so eloquent in how he speaks and drums and then you see how methodical he is as well. Everything he does on the kit is on purpose, and he looks effortless as he’s playing. Truly a MASTER at his craft, I admired this man from the music, but watching this play through and interview is a true treat for me as a former drummer and vocalist.

    What a “get” for Drumeo. I mean I know you see Portnoy, Chad Smith, all sorts of amazing drummers on the channel, but we’ve been watching their playing for years. To be able to see 2 playing in such an intimate setting, is amazing. We’ve all heard how good he is but to see all the flourishes like this is brilliant!

    Finally! A real drummer's reaction to this appropriately termed "master class." Like you, I said fuck like 80 times when I watched this. TOP GOD level technical prowess, pocket, orchestration, musical choices. I think I"ve watched the whole thing like 15 times wondering "how/why" does he choose to do THAT? When he says he's influenced by Gospel playing, the light bulb went off..the WHOLE album is essentially a gospel album. The structures, the chord progressions...the feelings evoked...he manages to play the drums in ways that explore the gospel possibilities in every song.

    If you're ever wanting to learn how to play those verse sections in Chokehold - he's playing dotted 8th notes between the hi hat, kick drum, and ghost notes on the snare. It sounds like an adaptation of a dotted shuffle groove created by Bernard Purdie, titled the 'Purdie Shuffle,' which is also the name of the song that features that groove. Deathcab For Cutie - Grapevines is another song that utilises this shuffle.
    And, those sections during TNBTG that sound rather polyrhyrhmic, are actually just a basic polymeter to accent every 3rd 8th note in each bar, with the snare and kick drum patterns remaining in 4/4 with the rest of the band. It's quite easy to learn if you just break it down one bar at a time. :)
    PS, my only critique of II is that he overplays his parts at times, making grooves or fills too busy and note-filled. It's ADHD drumming at times. As a drummer, and Psychologist (these days) with ADHD, I always chuckle hearing big booming linear fills in sombre sections of ST's songs.

      Thanks for this!
      Yeah, sometimes I think something is a polyrhythm first off when I hear it but it’s actually syncopated. I’m currently learning to play Euclid and that one has a crash hit every 3rd 8th note as well which after having mapped it out I’m able to learn to do. It’s super satisfying to play.

    • @gSWG3R
      @gSWG3R 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @SteveOGRock In my opinion/interpretation, that same syncopated China Cymbal pattern in Euclid, is musically, a callback to TNBTG. It's too similar not to be just thrown in there without intent to create a sense of continuity, all the way down to the rhythmic sections of both songs.

    • @SteveOGRock
      @SteveOGRock  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gSWG3R I suspect you are entirely correct about that. Interestingly that syncopated cymbal is not for the whole section but it stops after a number of bars and changes the feel to much more strait laced. Very cool.

    @justinjaime7327 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I’ve realized after watching this why it’s so hard to learn to play any of ll’s parts. During any standard crash or china groove he does, he’s also throwing in SO MANY upbeats and accents on his splashes and effect cymbals and they never seem to be in the same spots. Truly artistic in his decision making

    What you said regarding "feel" early on, is the exact reason I can't get away with el estepario. That guy is a machine, a human metronome, but I get absolutely nothing from his playing. II just has that groove in his playing

    Well f***k.* I already saw the full Drumeo video when it was released, but somehow, watching it again now with you reacting to it... I was filled with such longing after learning how to play drums that I think I cried a little. It might've just been the dry air that was extra dry for a few minutes there, but yeah, no, I'm almost 30 years old and I live in a caravan in the middle of nowhere with no-one around to teach me, or even room for a drum kit, but those are excuses. *Excuses!* That's what I got out of this video -- a renewed oomph to get started, to get learning.
    The way ii does the drumming just... makes me feel like I want to sit on that stool and do those things, I want it so badly that my body hurts.

      @SteveOGRock  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha yeah man that shuffle is a mountain to climb. Not even sure what I could recommend as a starter easy song for ST… I’m currently trying to learn Euclid, which isn’t technically THAT busy or complicated, but there is a lot of specific hits to try and nail and every bar is completely different from the next. But equally I think you could just jam along to it and get most of it in line. Maybe give that a go!

    Just because I'm on the timestamp and I will forget, but I'm just going to say this I see a lot of Joey Jordison in his style. Maybe not so much style but maybe how passionate he is when he actually plays a part that he plays and that is something that I remember quite well when watching Joey Jordison play. Again people are willing to say Joey Jordison was overrated, but those people never dived into his actual playing style or dove into how he plays his parts like everyone has been with II. I really don't get wrapped up in band drama but it's such a sad thing to see how he was just outcasted from the band and was never really given the credit that he deserved in which the amount of work and energy put in a slipknot. RIP Joey Jordison, he will always be the definition of a modern metal drummer for my generation that I look back on.
