    The shuttle loop is an iconic and classic coaster type which was a popular compact coaster built by both Arrow Dynamics and Anton Schwarzkopf around the world with a combined total of 20 installations of all of their shuttle loop variants. But today, less than half of them are still in operation. So what happened to this interesting model? Let’s look into it!
    Thank you guys for all of the support! I’ve been starting to grow faster recently and i hope to hit 100 soon! So keep it up! :)

    To go further with Walibi Belgium's Shuttle Loop, its future was basically at risk for a while. The first major incident occured in 1997 when the flywheel system broke down during a launch, causing it to launch the train just to the perfect speed for the train to get stuck upside down on the vertical loop. There's even old TV News reports from that here on TH-cam. Then, the flywheel launch broke down again in 2008. This time, the train completed the layout just fine but it was the nail on the coffin for the ride. The park deemed it unrepairable and considered replacing it (but reusing the station) for a Maurer family spinning coaster. The coaster was SBNO for a few years. But after many, MANY complaints from both coaster enthusiasts and long-time park guests, the park studied how expensive would it be to try to refurbish their Schwarzkopf Shuttle Loop vs installing the Maurer coaster. Gerstlauer offered a total refurbishment of the coaster for a lower price than building a new coaster so they officially announced it would reopen. First they said 2012 but it was delayed until July of 2013. Both long-time guests and coaster fans were happy to hear the news. And I remember seeing the old tracks sticking out from an overgrown building when I visited the park during that coaster's SBNO time.

    Really really loved these shuttles from both companies. Spent many years riding Tidal Wave in Illinois and have been on most of the Arrows in the US. They sure were a great engineering answer to a park needing a high thrill/small footprint attraction.

    yeah these seemed like a maintenance nightmare, so many moving parts and so many parts coming in contacts with other parts causing lots of wear and tear, plus the flywheel launch system and especially the electric winch launch and weight drop launch systems were just so inefficient, thats probably why it took almost 20 years until we saw a new launch coaster model to come out

    • @CoasterKey

  • @Alex-cw3rz
    @Alex-cw3rz 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I think when it came out having a coaster at all was a big deal, later on it wasn't as big a deal, therefore a straight bit of track with one loop, just doesn't leave lots to the imagination and I imagine they had relatively low attendance / didn't attract people to the park like they once did. Compared to newer coasters.

    The reason these rides fell out of favor was 2 words "Vekoma Boomerang." With Schwartzkopf going bankrupt and having limited resources and Arrow focused on their Suspended, Corkscrew, and eventual Mega Loopers the market changed. Vekoma came out with the Boomerang and it was a better model than the shuttle loop. However a few parks have gone to keeping the shuttle loop but replacing the fly wheel with LSM launches.

    • @CoasterKey
      @CoasterKey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Really Belgium’s walibi park did that, but it’s an interesting insight.

    • @svenlakemeier
      @svenlakemeier 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The "better model" can be discussed, at least for the Schwarzkopf Shuttle Loops (and I disagree). Way less maintenance needed, that's for sure. And as mentioned only one, not "a few" parks replaced the launch - and that one is using LIM, not LSM.

    I wonder if any of these could have LIM/LSM conversions done to them. Though I imagine the engineering costs would be too high to justify considering these are widely considered to be dated and unexciting designs by modern standards.

    Its so hilarious listening to you calling Schwazkopf. The W is called like a V [vee] but pronounced sharper and harder.
    My current information is that there is one last Shuttle Loop in the US and one last in Europe from Schwarzkopf.(Belgium) But the Version in Belgium is not anymore in its Original State, the Company who got the rights of Schwarzkopfs Blueprints and such did install a new Launch System, still in Original Style, but with a new System, Engine and such so its much easier for them to maintenance the ride.

The last one in America is montezumas revenge at Knott’s Berry farm, which has been SBNO with the park for the past year due to strict COVID-19 restrictions. That used to be at Carowinds, it was one of the prototype models. It was bought by Taft Broadcasting alongside Kings Dominion's King Kobra in early 1977. They both opened in May of that year. King Kobra closed in 1986, and went to Maryland, then England and finally Brazil where it continues to operate. Meanwhile, White Lightning left Carowinds in 1988, and immediately went to South Africa where it opened at Gold Reef City in 1989, been going strong since.
