My first time watching FLCL was catching episode 3 one night randomly on Adult Swim. I was super confused but I wanted more. It took 2 full watch throughs for me to get an idea of what's going on. It's definitely one of my favs. I wish I could watch it with you guys lol

It's crazy because I watched this on toonami when I was five and it was just funny to me and I have hardcore love and nostalgia for this because as I grew up I understood more of the mature content in anime and manga. Watching adults see the anime for the first time is SUCH a treat
The company that made this also made a legendary anime called neon genesis evangelion... It has beautiful art, a great soundtrack, and more twists than you know what to do with... It would be perfectttt for reactions
I tried showing my friend this and he couldn’t sit through 10 minutes if it. Between this and Trigun they are two of my all time favorites that I can never share with ppl due to negative reactions. They can’t see past the wackiness of some the characters and scenarios in episode 1 to the greatness that it evolves into throughout the series.
FLCL is, IMO, about puberty. Haruko is sexuality, personified. Shows up out of nowhere, hits Naota over the head, knocks him silly and gives him an annoying 'horn' that he has to cover up that embarrasses him. He is annoyed by the disruption Haruko brings, but also intensely fascinated by her. She moves into his life completely, and can't be kept on the periphery. FLCL is also one long music video, and has some of the most amazing music of any anime I've ever seen.
I've done the same thing. I'm glad there are other people out there who won't just get triggered because they don't catch something and start explaining it. Everyone here in the comments should just be patient. I'm not sure what level of understanding Chris has. But it seems pretty substantial to me.

It's messy-on-purpose and it all works. It means something and it means nothing and that's kind of the point. Its a big old metaphor for adolescence, this thing that feels sooo important when it happens, everything is so heightened, but looking back so much of the stuff that I thought was the most meaningful stuff in the world rings pretty hollow as an adult. FLCL represents that so well for me. (Only saying this 'cause I know y'all have already seen the whole thing so I'm not spoiling it for you)
Little things like when naota is like “my brother in the US” and then gets cut off….. he’s about to tell her about his American gf but haruko interrupts . Naota wants mamimi to himself and wants her to want only him but haruko gets in the way . Lol there’s so many little details in this show man

I watched this anime 10 times, no joke a literal 10 times before I figured out what's going on and I would say but no spoilers from me.
