It's difficult to watch your otherwise mild reactions to some of the best animation concepts ever devised. This 6 episode series, BY ITSELF, changed the course of modern animation. I remember watching this as a kid in the early 2000s and being blown away by every single frame. They didn't focus on "How do we make this make sense?" They only asked, "How do we make every second of this interesting to animate?"
Id like to mention these are normal people, not die-hard anime fans. We shouldn't force how FLCL is a masterpiece; they should figure it out on their own. Ill admit to watching FLCL for the first time in the same way.

Mamimi has a lot of issues -- emotionally dependent on others, gave up on maturing, an arsonist, disassociated from reality. For her, Naota's brother Tasuku was her saving grace, someone who would always be there for her. When he left, she started referring to everyone she considered "weaker" as "Ta-kun", including Naota. For Canti, Mamimi sees him as a substitute for Ta-kun -- a faceless figure who she can implant any role or personality upon as she wishes.
I actually think you might be wrong about that. Its kind of implied that Tasku was the arsonist who set fire to the school, and he was a major corrupting influence on her since then.
Just flow with the show first and then think about it afterwards. The point is to go through the ride of the show and its weird motions first, which is why it stood out against most animations of the time. It provided a new perspective and way of "tuning" in. I know that's strange since people are used to Western storytelling, needing to have some sort of linear progression, beat-by-beat pattern, but with this, it's not about that
I think Trigun was one of those shows where they watch a single episode based on Patreon requests. They did the same to demon slayer, I think. It look them months to actually watch the series. I’m just hyped waiting for you guys to finish episode 6 and to see thier final thoughts and see how much symbolism, character development you guys pick up on in the mits of all the beautiful chaos
Mamimi can't buy a longer skirt. There's apparently a phenomenon were poor families, when unable to take care of a child, instead of putting them to adoption just flat out abandon them or throw them out of the house (There's a movie about it called Nobody Knows (2004)), thankfully it seems to be stopping. Mamimi is probably bullied because, if you notice, is the only character who always wears the same clothes and seems to spend her time under a bridge. Also it is implied, up to you, that she might have lost her virginity at 11 to Naota's brother who must have been around 13, 14. Not rape technically but it seems to have left her stunted. Or at the very least lost her virginity to him before she was ready but never refused him because he saved her life from the fire she caused because she was bullied because she was poor (Which Naota's Dad mentionen in the last episode).
So glad you guys are continuing watching this crazy but awesome classic show. Yes, they edited the "Anna Nicole centerfold" line for the dub because of course they'd have to; I don't remember what the original was, but it was porn either way. Good ear for noticing that. Again, I will continue to advocate for you guys to only watch season 1 of this show. It's such a classic staple six-episode series, while seasons 2 & 3 came out, like, 2 years ago and try and fail to live up to the legacy of the original rather than doing their own thing. If you get to the end of season 1 & hope that future seasons provide any sort of closure, they don't. They're completely separate stories that have almost nothing to do with the first season; they don't take place in Mabase City, and follow totally different characters with one obvious exception who doesn't work nearly as well and feels more like a parody of themselves from season 1 than anything.
