  • Is Wing Chun Useful In A Street Fight? Wing Chun is a concept-based martial art that originated in southern China. Like many traditional martial arts, specific details on its origins are unclear. Legend says it was created by a Shaolin Kung Fu master, Ng Mui. This martial art became widespread after a Wing Chun master, Ip Man, started to teach the style throughout mainland China and Hong Kong. And with both Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan being amongst the martial artists drawing on the concepts of Wing Chun in their practice, its popularity sees that it remains taught worldwide, to this day. So what exactly is Wing Chun and how would it stand up in a street fight? That’s exactly what we are going to look at in this video. Keep watching to find out.

That's because martial arts don't work in fights as a whole. At this point in time your best bet is to learn a little boxing, wrestling and brazilian ju jitsu. Ju jitsu is the closest thing to having super powers. Thai has its place mixed in too for sure.

The vid showed experts in movies & as such they demonstrated the effectiveness of the art form , the fighting form ! If you think the movie " Actors " in the lead roles or the fight scene producers , have no true fighting ability ..... I would recommend you get an invite to a Hong Kong film studio making a new martial arts masterpiece . You are invited to challenge them at any point & both the producers & actors will be willing to watch your fighting skills gained from your actual street experience .......... Such encounters are a welcome Comedy Experience by the martial artists . I am sure you will make them laugh their ASS _ _ Off ..............

I studied Wing Chun for 5 years... I'm mostly a wrestler, but this system is very compatible as going forward is the goal in wrestling also. My favorite thing about it was it's focus on jamming punching opponents by this constant forward pressure. A lot of street fighters like to throw haymakers and that is not a strong strategy against this style.

Well, this was a military view of things, but still he said what all the masters say. It's not to start a thing.
Well, one thing he also said is, first round always is mental, if you win, the attacker rethink and don't even attack.
Once I was stopped by 3 bullies, searching for a victim.
Basically I stood where like bored to death, even slightly put my hands into my jacket and just said, very silently and calm to the leader:"you are not here for trouble and I am not here for trouble to." when I placed one finger, only one, next to his shoulder and directed him to the side, so I could left the circle around me.
One minute later I entered a train that just arrived and another guy who was there entered behind me and showed me his ID, he was a police officer out of duty, he just said:"I would have helped you, but you did not need it, my respect."
This is "winning the first round"
They tried to provoke and intimidate to cause fear. I just denied them success, so they was irritated and I topped it by commanding their leader to the side like pulling an insect away.
They searched for a victim, I did the exact opposite. So yeah, he was not in for that kind of trouble.

Just because someone is not trained doesn’t mean they can’t fight. The average wing Chun practitioner would get wrecked in a bar fight by people who know how to street fight. 😂
The only place you can find footage of effective Wing Chun is if you pull up clips of Ip Man movies.
Also it’s a very questionable to refer to Cung Le as a Kung Fu fighter. Fact is though he did train in Sanshou later on, it was the taekwondo and wrestling that he did as a child that made him able to take to it like a duck to water.
As for Don Wilson I don’t know why you mention him. The closest he got to an MMA fight is when he used to co-commentate some of the very early UFC events. But he never fought under MMA rules.
He was an amazing kicboxer though, no doubt about that.

IKR, It didn't show Wing Chun in a real fight. That's because it's expensive as hell feeding a Wing Chun Master.
Every time they loose a fight it's because they didn't eat enough. "Wing Chun Master vs Xu Xiaodong" looses the fight, and the reason he lost. "They didn't feed me enough rice before the fight'..........Yeah he really said that......Then the "Wing Chun Master vs Chinese Boxer with one arm tied behind his back" .......Gets creamed... His reason "They only served us one entre the afternoon before the fight".......
So I'm like Okay We hit a buffet and dude ate the whole place. I square up to fight, and "Ooh no I'm too full" that went on for 8 hours and it was always too hungry to fight, or too full to fight. Then it's "Oops I gotta take a shit." lol I Guess if you want to find and Fight a Wing Chun Master, Just look by the on and off ramps for a cat with a sign that says. "Will fight for food" Yeah for real, you see the way IP man whoop that dude for a Yam, and then a whole school for bags of rice.

From that I've seen (and in 68 years I've seen a lot), Wing Chun is effective against a weaker less determined & experienced foe. However a larger stronger enraged attacker, especially one who has any grapelling skill, will cut right through Wing Chun defenses. A "street" fight usually involves one or more people who are accustomed to getting in brawls. If the Wing Chun practitioner has only practiced in the Dojo & may have taken part in controlled competitions, they have no idea how powerful an angry halfback pumped full of adrenaline & testosterone can be. By the time he finds out, it's too late to hook, trap, block, kick or punch. And if you're lucky enough to hit the attacker in a sensitive place, it'll probably just piss him off even further. Wing Chun makes good movies. Who doesn't like IP Man?

    • @leeboy7139
      @leeboy7139 2 ปีที่แล้ว

A lot of people underestimate the effectiveness of martial arts. There was news story when I was a news where agroup of 4 men attempted to rob a gas station. When the story broke, it was assumed by everyone at the dojo that it was the younger Sensei who taught the teenagers and young adults but it was the old Sensei who owned the gas station who taught the young children. Aikido is the most maligned of all the Asian martial arts. But he prevailed and more then likely broke a couple of fingers of his attackers. The attackers all ran away after getting their asses kicked by the old.

But after studying Muay Thai, I’m convinced that the inclusion of the knees and elbows create a complete street fighting style.
Plus the boxing style of MT can I throw an opponent off guard on the streets.
So I use a combination of WC, MT, and Peek a boo boxing.
But, with grappling gaining popularity, I plan on adding BJJ to complete my training.

Wing Chun does use elbow strikes though. Not 100% sure on knees but I'm pretty dang sure they're used as well.
I'm no fighter but so far it seems like Wing Chun seems like a favorable martial art in the self-defense context because of the speed. Other martial arts like muay thai and boxing may have more powerful strike techniques, but you don't need super powerful strikes in a real fight because weakspots like groin, neck, eyes, etc exist. Thus, it's all about who can actually land their strikes first. Wing Chun just seems like a pretty practical package on paper: it's fast, utilizes basically all striking tools, focuses on applying pressure as well as defense, and incorporates practical weak spots.

I started learning Wing Chun at 64 years old. The training was brutal: 100 fist push ups and 100 sit ups in the one hour session, in addition to learning and practicing punches and kicks. Our Sifu was awesome, he let us hit him in the ribs as heard as we could, and it had no effect. As he said, you have to condition your body, if you punch someone Wing Chun with unconditioned fists, you will break your knuckles. As in everything else, you have to put in the hours and years to be good. And two other points, a good big one will beat a good small one, and it rarely matters which style you have learned, if the other guy has learned longer!
