    Great how-to, very clear and easy to follow. I'm a mom who knows next to nothing about bikes but this was so easy i did it myself in about 20min. now my balance bike move-up kiddo can actually ride her hotrock!! Its been sitting for a year cuz she couldn't ride it with the dang coaster brakes! Thank you!!

    Thank you! Great video. One small tweak that worked well for me was instead of discarding the small washer I put it between the the tabbed washer (the one you modify by bending the tabs) and the axel catch... This ensured the free wheel is butter smooth with no accidental catches 👍🏻

      Thanks. Additional washer worked perfectly for me on an old hotrock 20. Without washer, forward pedal was not catching immediately and spring was catching while back pedaling.

    Man thank you so much for posting this video. Surprisingly none of my local bike shops knew how to disassemble a coaster break and make it into a free well LOL. I watch the Video twice and then it took me about 30 minutes from start to finish while pausing your video to get everything knocked out. Very much appreciated

    Just finished the ‘mod’ :). I have never worked on a bike before so it took me about 1 hour. I got stuck trying to get the wheel back in. But I just kept watching, pausing and rewinding. • @Stackedbmx
      @Stackedbmx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, the public do not respect bike mechanics enough and it turns bike shop employees & owners grumpy. Some times it is as simple that they only want to work on $2k and up bikes. Bike mechanics is def a craft

      You don’t, but you may need to use a washer or make a spacer the same thickness as the arm so that when you put everything back together it all lines up as before. Hope that makes sense.

    Bro thank you for this video! I have like 3-4 BMX bikes and one of them had a coaster brake wheel that would thrust/jerk forward VERY violently whenever I tried to slow down under fast speeds.
    I took the wheel off and took it to the dining table while watching your video as I made a oil mess everywhere lol
    I eventually got the coaster brake tab things to end up in the garbage can and now the wheel works with no problem! 😃

    So I'm trying to fix up a couple bikes for my girls. They aren't in need of BMX mods per se, but both girls have asked for hand brakes instead of coaster brakes. I'm pretty handy, but I've never done mechanic work before (more woodworking/construction type stuff). Would it work to do this mod to rid their bikes of the coater brakes and then I could install front and rear hand brakes? I've found tons of videos like yours, explaining how to make it a freecoaster. (Though yours helped explain it best to someone who's not already knowledgeable of the mechanics of a bike.) I've also seen several on installing/replacing brakes. However, I can't seem to find any videos or articles on converting a bike from coaster brake system to a hand brake one, and how to do it safely. Thanks!!

    • @Stackedbmx
      @Stackedbmx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would suggest getting the brake on the bike and working before this. Many bikes have a hole in the frame on the top back tube where the brakes can go. You probably want regular caliper brakes. if the hand brakes stop, turn it into a this. I hope this helps

    Hi bro. Nice video! I have a single speed with this break. But I want it to make a fixed gear. Can I just replace the freewheel sprocket with a fixed sprocket after I removed the coaster brake?

    • @robinsheppard6400
      @robinsheppard6400 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. If you remove the brake, then when you backpedal, the drive system doesn't engage with the hub. Instead, it will function a lot like a single-speed freewheel. The differences are that a) if you roll the bike backwards, the pedals won't turn, and b) you won't get the click-click-click when coasting or backpedaling that most freewheel hubs have, due to the ratchet mechanism (note some freehub designs, like Shimano's 'Silent Clutch' , use a different mechanism, and don't exhibit this clicking).
      Also, if you have a coaster brake (ie, backpedal brake) in the hub, you won't have a freewheel mechanism in the first place; if you did, then the brake wouldn't work.

      BleuCam negative you need to purchase a fixed hub/wheel

    Already had to do some maintenance on mine ive got a motorized bike and the coaster break kept getting in the way. The torque from the engine and the coaster break ended up messing up my tire a bit

      This helps but the engines damage wheels pretty easy. Try getting a thicker spoked wheel

    When we backpedal it causes the gear to unscrew from the other part inside. This causes the rider to have to pedal forward multiple times to screw it back together before the chain will advance the bike forward. What do we need to do to fix this? Thank you!

      Watch the video again. You most likely need to stretch the spring or add a washer

    You should've used a cone wrench to keep the cone nut in place while tightening the locknut.

    Did this and it worked. The problem is, after I pedal backwards, sometimes it take 1/3 to a 1/2 rotation of the crank/sprocket to engage. How can I fix that?

      Stretch the spring more or you don’t have the washer on it

    Is this something that can be done on regular cruiser bikes? And will it work reliably enough on a motorized bicycle?

    • @Stackedbmx
      @Stackedbmx  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      nothing will work reliable on the infamous rattling motorized bike. If you are having trouble look into heavy gauge spoked beach cruise wheels. We will try and get some on our website for you.

      @@Stackedbmx was just tossing this idea around because cruisers fit those motors relatively well but they all come with stock coaster breaks, I built one awhile ago but I don’t like the idea of keeping the coaster brake this time around.

    So when we put together, the wheels become free forward and backwards, it means we need to stretch the spring right?
