Elephants have very sensitive trunks and beatings are extremely painful and uncomfortable for them. They can't smell, feed, drink and it hurts for a long time for them, hence their fear of bees.

We loved our time in Tembe when we visited South Africa about 6/7 years ago. We got to see our very first Suni Antelope there.
