Trane Voyager Gas Screen Tip

  • Jeff Montalvo gives us a tip about a commonly missed gas screen issue on Trane Voyager gas package units. Along the way, he shows us how to get to the gas screen and what to watch for.
The Trane Voyager units have a small disc gas screen that can prevent the unit from running if it's too dirty. Before replacing the inducer, gas valve, limit, or hot surface igniter on a Trane Voyager, it would be prudent to check the gas screen to make sure it isn't clogged. If that screen's holes get clogged with dirt, the furnace will start up and then shut off.
Jeff generally uses a bristle brush to get the dirt off the screen. Then, he makes sure to mount it back into the unit correctly. If you don't mount it correctly or misplace it, you may end up getting a callback.
If the gas screen is rusty, then you'll also want to check the heat exchanger for rusting or other forms of wear and damage.
Another thing to note is that it's best to change the inducer motor gasket before it has a chance to wear away or break down.

I appreciate your videos. I have been in the HVAC&R trade for 40+ yrs, still learning often from y'all.

Would you do this on a maintenance or just when having combustion issues? I've had those bolts thread inserts break loose and couldn't get back together. Had to replace entire heat exchanger plate.

Is there a part number for that screen?

What happens if the screen is not reinstalled when the inducer is replaced?

I wonder the same question. I cam across unit firing up but coughing and flame goes out. I opened up and saw someone took the screen out and never put back. I will come back tomorrow with new screen and see how it will go

@@leepaeksoon4886 I’m curious if that was the problem in your case. Because I didn’t see this video until after I removed one. It’s been running great for a month without it, I’m just hoping I don’t cause any issues down the road.

Ok. A little Updates on the unit i mentioned. I found out that another company worked on the unit before me and they installed wrong ignition control board. As for woofing burner sound, gas valve was not opening correctly.
