I liked Assault Horizon. Not as an Ace Combat game but as a game in general. It was stunningly gorgeous, you got to fly helicopters and heavy bombers and it felt a little more gritty and less anime-esque. Not that anime-esque is a bad thing at all, it was just different. I think if it'd been sold without the Ace Combat name attached to it it would've been better received by the arcade flight sim community.
Also Zero had, by far, the best soundtrack of the franchise.

Such nostalgia and while I still have and play the game nothing will replace those 2004 days. I mean this game and just simply middle school and tv shows I use to be into back then I just miss that. Even with the game or DVD of said TV show which I do have can't compare to when it was all brand new to me. Ace Combat 4 is still my favorite with Zero being second. This series holds a special place for me, despite me having only actually played two of its games.
I played Air Combat [1995] on PS1, and I sometimes sat down and played a campaign runthrough in one sitting, more times than I can count. It was the first time I truly learned to 'fly' an aircraft, stick proper and all.
I played Ace Combat Zero on PS2, and it just took my love of aviation further.
I always had a fascination with flying, aerospace, movies, games, books, all sorts, but this game series was the catalyst, and now, I'm training to become a flight instructor, admittedly one of the few jobs liable to less affected in aviation by covid-19.
I may not have played the entire series, but I will forever be grateful for getting a rental of Air Combat from Blockbuster video all those years ago winter 2000, before eventually buying my own copy.

Holy shit man you sold me on this franchise. It sounds and looks like a ton of fun. I never knew the series had its own universe and world building. I'm a sucker for that sort of stuff, and plus it gameplay seems way more fun than I might have assumed. (Thought it was more flight sim before)
Great video overall, I really liked the way you transitioned from game to game btw lol.

I think I was in the same boat at one point with dimissing it because it's a flight game. I don't think this series is really talked about enough, and it absolutely should be! It should be held up as one of those classic video game franchises and yet it seems to only have this very niche yet dedicated fanbase. It doesn't help that the flight genre is full of consumers who want what I call 'grueling realism', and kind of turn their nose up at these more video gamey kind of flight games.
