Genius dude, I literally could not have put it better myself. Ace Combat isn't about simulating real-world combat scenarios, what Ace Combat does is make you remember what it felt like running around with your toy planes in the back yard, and bringing THOSE scenarios to life.
One of my earliest memories, at age 4, was me sitting in the livingroom with my dad and eating my supper and watching him play Air Combat. After he finished a mission, he passed me the controller and said "Want to try?" and I played a mission and I was hooked from then on. I still remember how he explained how to play and how to shoot down enemy planes. He's gone now, but even though he's gone, Ace Combat is still here, so he sorta is too. I grew up with this franchise, and I fully intend to pass it onto my children. I'm gonna make playing Ace Combat a family tradition.
Anyway, that's what I've come to believe, and I think that's enough.
Yeah it's spot on that AC is about fantasy and well fun.
What an amazing story with your dad, finding a common hobby is key.

True as that may be, art and life have a habit of imitating one another, ace combat wouldn't be itself without realistic aerodynamic physics.

Ace Combat 7 was my introduction to the franchise, Top Gun Maverick came out, and I wanted find a game with Jets in it, bought it on sale.
And thus truly began my Aviation enthusiast arc, it even became my first TH-cam Playthrough, and the among the only times I actually engage in the online content.
I started at ace combat 2, but 7 turned me into the little kid back in 1998.

My guy I was in my 30's and I cried, then got really pissed off and left no enemy in the skies, Swordsman was a decent filler character but lacked the "so that's how we're going to do this mission, ok fuck it I'm with ya friends lets kick some ass" attitude and mentality. Nagase was our conscience and or moral and ethical high ground she knew when to reign us in where as Swordsman was just an annoying buzzing in my ear. I still sing along to the song when your squadron is joined by EVERYONE to attack the tunnel. "thoughts endless in flight, day turns into night, questions you ask your soul, how fast can I go, how fast is to slow" all while smiling my ass off knowing what's about to go down.
What I loved about Pixy's dialogue in the duel is that it's not only talking about your character but on how the conflict is resolved. A head to head joust where the two pilots. "When we face each other, we can finally see our true selves." and "There may be a resemblance, but we never face the same direction." which I thought was real clever.

For those in the wondering, a group of Devs that worked on Ace Combat 3 would later become part of the Team that worked on the Drakengard games and later Nier. Thus letting newer faces have the skies to shatter with Ace 4
Though you can still see Ace Combat 3 DNA in those series, to the point that Drakengard's production name "Dragonsphere" comes from Ace Combat 3's "Electrosphere"

I've traveled all over the world in the past 4 years, but Ace Combat's soundtrack is something I always bring with me on my adventures. Zero, Liberation of Gracemeria, Unsung War, and now Dual Wielder, Daredevil, and Magic Spear are all masterpieces.
Throw "Near the Border" in there. It's such a great song for solo traveling and introspection

I remember getting into my first dogfight with my first "Enemy Ace", i was so sure i was hot shit but then this guy came through and downed one of my squadmates, and it was of a character I had actually really grown to like. I was genuinely driven by rage to take this guy out, and with the music, the raging storm above us and the stomach churning bends and twists of the canyon below us, we flew and we fought. It was exhilarating, it felt like the worlds deadliest dance in the middle of a hurricane.
What game and mission was that? I don't recognize it.

@@valravnsshadow9422 I'm not 100% sure, but it might be AC7 while flying with your penal squadron. Haven't played it myself, so I'm not sure which mission (the one where the enemy ace quickly looped around and shot the Fulcrum).

I was thinking it was that massive air battle at the Roundtable in AC Zero.
It's always been so hard to explain to people why this series had such an impact on me growing up. AC5 is solidly in my top 5 games but impossible to convey why lol. Great vid Tim, you had done our funny little plane game justice.
I loved 04 so much back then. It was possibly my first time ever experiencing a great story in a video game, I even tried to make bad albeit charming comic strips with stickmen retelling of AC04's story in grade school.
Note that I still love and play it from time to time even to this day.

I think its because how immersive it is, im playing ac5 now after finished ac0(knight route) the sense of danger, scarcity of weapon(i always run out of ammo) and the feels of running out of time even there's any is what makes ac5 really special for me.
The best way to explain it is you're the MC in anime Top Gun.
For me with ac5, it’s me getting so connected to the characters and story as a kid and replaying it now that I wish I could genuinely live my life as part of it. That’s just how I think about it
To this day "Near The Border" and Pixy's famous: "Yo Buddy, still alive? and thanks friend... See You Again." will always give me goosebumps, Zero was such am influential game to me growing up that I remember picking up any and all flight sims and arcade flight sims i could get my hands on. but none will ever reach me like Zero did.
When I was in the Air Force I came to the same realizations he did. It was very poetic. I mean, without wanting to nuke people of course. But he is a great representation of someone bred for war that realizes nothing they are fighting for makes sense.

Recently I dived back into my love for AC, a love that hasn't dwindled one bit. I remember playing my first, AC5, on cool summer break nights feeling the dream of flight be born, creating aspirations to be a pilot myself. I have served my country, 5 years in the navy now, but I let that dream stay as it is specifically for the reason this retrospective was made. As much as having your office be a cockpit is no doubt one of the most cool ideas to anyone looking up, to reflect on the naive image of being in that seat taking impossible turns and being that hero is a dream I prefer to keep so insane and innocent as my childhood can continue to allow it. Thank you for this video, can't wait to see more
I have a lot of nostalgia for Ace Combat 5 as well. AC4 had been my first but AC5 was special because I was living in Canada at the time (I’m from Sweden) and living in a dorm of international students. I met a Japanese guy in the lounge playing his Japanese PS2. My PAL consoles weren’t working so I asked if I could play with him. We played so much AC5 together among other games. It was in Japanese text but as the voice lines were still in English I could follow along with the story. Ace Combat has always been great at making me feel part of something epic. More than any FPS game has managed. Flying across the sky they manage to make the world feel alive even if it’s all just radio chatter it makes you feel like there are people down there on the ground or the water that count on you. I’ve never been in the military as I wasn’t selected for conscription (We have a mandatory military training here but not everyone is chosen especially since the Cold War ended and lowered the number of recruits substantially) due to health reasons. But Ace Combat makes me feel like it more than any other video game or movie. AC5 is so huge. Maybe bigger than 4 and 0 combined and as such it might just be the best one in the series. The story is great as well.
Daredevil really does give you goosebumps... Hearing it kick into action in this video gave me a shiver up my spine immediately. But it's also one of the best kinds of spine shivers you can experience.
It's a truly divine experience if you just so happen to be diving towards the Arsenal Bird during _that_ part of the mission especially if it's the first time you played the mission. The dialogue is also done really well as it kind of tries to guide you into getting ready to attack just before the music does it's magic.
I may be 30 now, with a lot of life lessons and workloads on my back. Delusions and down-to-earth hopes, but your representing and drop of "Daredevil" took me back to that bedroom floor, and with tears to my eyes and goosebumps on my skin i once again remembered how much i love this series, how much it matters to me and how i grew with it. Thank you for this beautiful retrospective, and as for me, i'm going to boot up the ol' dusty PS2 and re-play the sacred holy trinity (4 - 5 - 0) with a grown-up mindset. And i'm sure i'll love it more than ever. Thank you again and i really hope that your work soars the skies and reaches new heights all over the world.

This video perfectly encapsulates my love for this series. Whether you are a habitual line crosser feeding the f22, or Tom cruise mourning Goose. EVERYONE finds a place in ace combat. From gun kills, to horribly busted QAAM's that are basically a cheat code or the weird unlockable laser firing planes. We all have a place in strangereal, and we all belong: In the danger zone.
My guy congratulations on such an amazing video! I felt goosebumps throughout the whole thing and I felt so proud just like the day that my father picked up Ace Combat 5 and lent me his PS2 to play for the first time when I was 7 years old. I sincerely hope that Mr. Kono stumbles upon this video and sees it. I love this series and thanks to AC, I am now an Aerospace Engineering student almost ready to graduate.
I was about 2 minutes in when it really hit me.
He gets it.
I was an old hand at the PS2 era, switched to xbox and dallied a little with 6 and AH, finally to make my return to 7 on launch day. A series that challenged my ideas of narrative and what an enemy even is. A sountrack that brought tears to my eyes and still does.
AC was my childhood as much and more as Halo and Half-life 2. But this series among all others has held a poetry and artistry unmatched in the genre and pushed to the extreme by a passion in Team Aces that other studios should be envious of.
A series that laid open the wild blue and made you feel the operatic drama playing out in cutscenes and on your radio.
A beautiful tribute, a wonderful retelling, absolutely fantastic work.

The production quality of is video is, as usual, both terrifying and inspirational. Aside from that though, I have an odd relationship with Ace Combat- that relationship being that I've never played a single game from the series, but can still listen along to a video like this and relate to just about everything you're saying because of my childhood obsession with a game called Warship Gunner 2. I've literally never heard anyone talk about it, let alone with the same reverence that people lavish on Ace Combat, but at least if my elementary school memories are to be trusted it was more or less Ace Combat But With Boats. A typical mission would constitute cruising up at 90 knots to some island offshore of Fantasy-WW3-era Fantasy Japan in your twin-hulled jet propelled superbattleship (that you of course designed yourself) because HQ really needed someone on site to fire 24 600mm artillery shells per second into the side of weaponized oil rig with a Death Star laser on top. Your commanding officer would probably be revealed as a traitor part way through and appear from nowhere to engage you in a battle to the death, along with 50 other anonymous ships programmed to explode in one hit. Shit was bonkers, and playing it as a 10-yea-old I didn't even have the brain capacity to call it out as such. I was just stuck there, rapt in the fever dream, drinking in the simultaneously hyperrealistic and wildly delusional slurry of military proceduralism and mecha anime camp. It was without a doubt my favourite game.
All that is to say- I wonder if you've heard of it? Also, Megalith Agnus Dei is maybe the coolest song ever made. That is all.

This is honestly such a well done video. I love the writing and how it really encapsulates the response I wish I could say when my friends ask "why do you like dumb plane game". It's a dumb plane game and I love it because it's a dumb plane game. Also the cinematography of you just walking along the wasteland with the blue skies behind you really remind me of the opening tarmac scene in AC7.
I'm only 8 minutes into the video and am already blown away by your vfx, editing and art/art direction.
I came to really enjoy the radio banter and hatable/lovable characters in the recent AC7. When team mates died or an unpredictable situation took out a friend, i felt it. I felt helpless and upset, which is weird when youre flying a death star with wings by the end of the game. For as goofy and rediculous as it all is, it FEELS believable. The people feel real, and so do the situations.

Ace combat had a profound effect on my life. I fell in love with not only the franchise but aviation as a whole. 13 years after first playing it, i'm graduating from the harvard pf the skies with a degree in aeronautics. The day i turned in my last assignment i played ace combat 7. Just to put a cap on it so to speak.
I'm only a few minutes in, but I can already see how well-produced this piece is. I really appreciate the transitions and graphics. Your passion is immediately apparent, and entirely appreciated.
Edit: GOD, the part where you've composited yourself behind the landing gear of a toy airplane on your floor is so good. All these little presentational tricks are so clever. I love this a lot.

Ace Combat is the Metal Gear of Flight sims, and Ace Combat Zero is the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance of Ace Combat Games.
The first thirty seconds of this video are probably the strongest thirty seconds I have ever seen in a TH-cam video for a channel I have never watched before.
The level of chills that I just got are actually ridiculous. I swear, the temperature in my rook feels like it just dropped ~20 degrees F.

I just kinda stumbled into this video by luck but god damn did it hit me hard, everything from the editing to the script was just perfect, watching someone put this much love into one of the most precious parts of my childhood brought me to tears, thank you so much,
There's a magic about this game i'd like to point out, you know what that is? The Musics. BGMs in particular. Kobayashi-San is a very special magician who can just pull masterpieces off his hat just for this game.
Ace Combat 5 The Unsung War was by far the greatest game I've ever played. That story was TOP TIER and no one can tell me otherwise. This series has my heart for real
this is honestly the best documentary i have seen in years. it doesn't use ridiculous, flashy animatics, it uses gameplay, and that's pretty much it.
I think this is one of the best made videos ever about the history of Ace Combat. A level of production that I have seen very few times in my life, a video that oozes love for the series, story expertise and knowledge of the lore (and incredible editing skills and choice of graphics and music)

I think AC7 is an allegory to the journey that the AC franchise had went through.
Mission 1-4 as AC1-3: it has a humble begining with a big dream as it tries to find it's footing.
Mission 5-14 as AC4-0: it knows what it is and tries to be the best of itself.
Mission 15 as AC6: it's continuing upon tradition but stumbles due to unforseen factors outside of their control.
Mission 16-18 as ACAH-ACI: it lost it's way and is trying desperately to find a footing in a world they hardly recognize.
Mission 19 as the development of AC7: one last attempt to stand against an insurmountable odds for what they believe is right.
Mission 20 as AC7: the final flight where everything has lead up to, what determines their fate in the dark blue, where the skies unknown.
Correct me if I made any mistake here and maybe add something I miss.

It's just AC7 is the PA's mistake on having to kneel to NAMCO's greed to milk the hell out of the other series retrospectively and provide a terrible online service and game modes, ignoring completely the Ace Combat Infinity's success
@TheGreatAcePilot here's the thing, infinity WASN'T successful, hence the servers being shut down after only 4 years. The multi-player wasn't what made ace combat special, never has. It was the story and what it's grass roots got right. What you did as a kid growing up with no care about l reality.

@@TheGreatAcePilot Infinity was fun briefly until it was clear the release schedule was too long, the tournaments were p2w, and you could only play a certain amount each day before having to pay up.
They made terrible choices and to call it a success is questionable, as it probably actually set AC back several years.
It did have some interesting single player missions, but like I Said, the release schedule was long and for one or a handful of missions, insufficient to justify the cost they also wanted. It was very, very greedy and turned many of us off. It was fun for a bit though.
Unpopular opinion: Assault Horizon had the best multiplayer because it actually had mechanics and was not a QAAMfest and it was fairly layered. Dogfight mode was an interesting idea for multiplayer (in singleplayer.... obviously it was a little dumb because the AI simply cannot cope), and two good players would have a hard time one-upping the other, and it was not about spamming QAAMs like AC6 where that was all you had to do to win 24 player FFAs.
This is ignoring DFM's issue of being able to run your opponent into the ground because of the auto-pilot it forces you under in the cinematic mode of course and making you follow them regardless of where they are going and apparently they never thought people would simply make others crash.
It also had killstreak nukes, which were dumb, and AH was a sad moment in C history
but also to the OP that is pretty much just a standard narrative so it could apply to almost any story. 7 was also mid. It wasn't bad it wasn't amazing I had a fine time with it. I think people really slept on the PSP games which were very compelling and had a lot of great ideas, including very unique co-op, but they PUT IT ON THE PSP

Finally was able to sit down and watch the video. It's hard for me to get into this kind of game and for part of the video that was still true but you still made it exciting, especially during the part about Ace Combat 7's music. I even got goosebumps then
Wow. Just wow. This video was recommended to me by a friend that knows I love military aviation and the Ace Combat series. Since owning every game in the franchise since the original PlayStation title, I always loved the unique feel of the franchise. Some games did better than others, but as a whole the different entries look quite realistic but play like an enhanced version of said reality. But even with this being said, I have never been able to properly explain what is it that I love so much about it. And somehow, it's like you got into my mind and wrote my words, my opinions, but more importantly my feelings about the whole of what makes Ace Combat so amazing. And for that, I can't thank you enough. Remarkable. Perfection is the only word that seems fitting to what you have done here.
Finished a mission in ace7 at the same time the credits rolled, absolutely phenomenal work you have done here, fly high, Ace.

I want to thank you for making this, I had found this on my recommended, not having heard of the AC series at all (and only having a passing interest in planes, cars are more my thing) but hearing you talk about the series with enthusiasm and love like that is infectious, and I really resonated with the idea of forgoing realism for theatrics and just feeling cool as hell. So I decided to give AC2 through to 0 a go and I really loved them all, my favourite being either 3 or 5, I can't decide lol

Ace combat will always have s special place in my heart! Ace combat 5 being my favorite till this day and 4 and Zero being close behind. I cried like a baby when a certain someone dies...i dont wanna spoil it but yea it destroyed me. The music and gameplay of the ace combat is legendary. I know its not for everyone but for those of us who wanted to take to the skies as kids it really did something that no other series really did. Great video btw! Got a new subscriber 😊
Ace combat is that type of daydream I always think about and continue when I was super obsessed with jets and like 9 years old that is over the top, badass, and pretty futuristic.
When you started the Ace Combat 2 montage I was able to perfectly whistle the song even though I havent played the game in over 20 years. Memories

Ace Combat 6 was my introduction to the series and boy it got me hooked, I was so hyped when I saw the trailer for Ace Combat 7. I played AC6 for so many years till my Xbox broke. We moved and I lost the disk, I was so obsessed I tried to see if it was on PC but never found it.

I really want to play 6, very badly want to. Thing is Xbox in Asia is, to put it simply, non-existent; not even 7 got to 6's level of mission structure and gameplay mechanics, and as years gone by I've became more appreciative of the rather subtle differences for innovating the gameplay aspects throughout the series.

Ace Combat 4 was my first foray into the series as a 12 or 13 year old, I've been hooked since, I love the respect to the dogfight that has been paid.
Ace Combat 4 taught me how to fly. It'd joystick control of the camera was awesome. I always flew in the cockpit.

The top gun sequel legitimately felt like an ace combat mission, an end game bonus mission before the final boss mission that needlessly constrains your op stealth fighters in order to artificially increase the difficulty.

This video has knocked me back to being a kid. It genuinely made me cry happy tears. I can not thank you enough for the love you put in this video. It was simply perfect.
While all my friends in 2009 played racing, fighting, shooting, football games, I wasn't good at any of them, when I went to buy a new game for my PS2 game library I saw a greenish cover with a plane on it, It was Ace Combat 5, I tried to give it a chance, I could barely get past the first mission, the subtitles in my game were in Japanese, and when I was 11 I barely knew English to understand the radio.
But that game was different, there was something about it... I looked for tips, got a .docx guide with text only, indicating how to do each mission, and so my adventure began, and my interest in planes took to the skies, literally, I found my place, I discovered so much about that game in particular, and when I came across Ace Combat 4 for sale in a store, I also bought it, and loved it, later Ace Combat Zero, became my favorite franchise with these 3 games.
I looked for any plane game on the PS2, Airforce Delta Strike, Lethal Skies, Aero Elite Combat Academy, but none of them came close to what Ace Combat made me feel, the story, gameplay, soundtrack, it was definitely my favorite series, I was able to play Ace Combat AH, Skies of Deception, Joint Assault and I felt the same vibe as the PS2 trilogy that I unfortunately had to sell in 2014, and now Ace Combat 7 that I played on a notebook and bought for my Xbox Series.
I wasn't good at any game my friends played...
Because none of these genres made me feel at home.

Didn't expect to watch more than 15 minutes of an hour and 20 minutes-long video, and yet here I am an hour and 20 minutes later, absolutely blown away by the quality and passion put into it. As someone who's only ever played AC7, I now consider myself an avid Strangereal fan!

I'm one of the newer fans, my first ace game was assault horizon, and my first TRUE game was Ace Combat 3d: cross rumble(an enhanced remake of ace combat 2, and pure awesome!). But yes, I agree, this series has a very tight-nit and dedicated fandom.

Ace 7 was great, Daredevil was more than great, but the fact that it ended with Nagase and the callback to Ace 5.... that made it perfect.
Your section about Daredevil is something I find especially poignant.
I've always been a big fan of AC, even if I haven't had the opportunity to play every single game - but hearing both Daredevil and Faceless Soldier in their respective trailers _absolutely gave me goosebumps_ and ensured I would buy the game day 1, which I did. I still watch the trailer at least a few times a month because I am absolutely enamored by everything - the cinematography, the dialogue, the music. It is _perfection._
You are 100% right. It isn't about realism, it's about the fantasy. And nothing makes you feel like a big god damn hero more than the hopeful radio chatter of your comrades putting their faith in you as the orchestra and vocals swell in the background.
THAT is the fantasy. THAT is what I daydreamed about when I was little. It's STILL what I daydream about even though I'm over 30. That childlike wonder and thrill will never get old and it inspires my writing and game projects. If I could make someone else feel even 1/10th of what the major moments of AC7 made me feel, I would call it a job well done.

I love Ace Combat, from as far back as the 90s when my age was still in single digits. This video is amazing, and I thank you for making it.
TLDR: Ace combat is an amazing series and Ace combat 7 changed my life
I remember when I was like 7 my dad let me play on his ps2 sometimes, it was mostly gran turismo that I played, but one day he let me watch him play Ace combat 4, sometimes he would let me play and I remember one specific level that took us so long to beat because we would destroy all the enemies but still not have enough score and fail until once I crossed the return line to rearm on accident and more planes appeared when I came back, I also remember one specific time my dad died because he was trying to gun a transport plane and I was telling him to use missiles but he wouldn’t and he suddenly slammed into its vertical stabilizer and died, but eventually we got rid of the tv we played it on and we didn’t have a tv that we could use so I forgot about it completely, until one day I saw the trailer for Ace combat 7, I told my dad about it because of how amazing it looked, but i again completely forgot about it, until one day I was in a target with my mom and I saw a physical copy of the game, remembering the trailer and how good it looked plus the memories of Ace combat 4, I begged my mom to get it, at first she didn’t want too but I was putting just about everything I could on the table, paying her when we got home, doing extra chores and stuff, and eventually she caved in and let me get it, to put it simply I think that changed the course of my life, I began to be completely obsessed with aviation and aircraft, i would be surprised if I have less than 2000 hours in ac7, ac7 still to this day is the only game that I’ve 100% completed, I have every achievement, every skin, every aircraft, every part, I’ve got s rank on every mission on ace difficulty. It truly fueled my love for aviation, nowadays I’ve moved on from ac7 in the fact that I can’t even play it anymore as I sold my Xbox and have a pc now and don’t own it on Pc, but I’m still obsessed with aviation, I play mostly dcs nowadays for my aviation fix but even with the simulators that I also love playing, I still miss ace combat as I haven’t played it in almost a year now, but if ace combat 8 comes out you can be sure as hell that I’m going to preorder it, I really hope that the entire game will be playable in vr as that would be truely amazing.
This is going on way too long but yes to put it simply this series has changed the course of my life, and made me discover something that I’m truly passionate about, something that I want to devote my life to doing, aviation.
