I have a Deity D3 Pro and was having the same issue. The Deity came with a TRRS-TRRS cable, which causes the same (almost nonexistent) sound recording issue you illustrated. Wouldn't work with a TRS-TRS cable either. I found a TRS-TRRS cable that I had stashed away and gave that a try. TRRS side plugged into mic, TRS plugged into camera, and viola, it works! Powers the mic too.
Thanks for your videos, I've watched for ever learning the Gh6. Question - is there a reason a stereo mic - Sennheiser 440 - should have a lot of electric noise? The 'Special Mic' setting is grayed out and I've played with everything else. I had some with a mono mic, but realized if I turned it to 48kHz that fixed most. I'm just curious if there's anything else I might be missing.
Hi, no problem, glad to hear you are finding them useful 👍It's hard to know without hearing it and seeing the setup but it could be interference. The 'Special Mic' option is reserved for compatible Panasonic shotgun mics. My first things to check would be the audio levels and the gain option. This video gives more of a run-through of the audio options on the camera - th-cam.com/video/9lKSEmFxxRI/w-d-xo.html
Good to hear you got it working 👍 I believe the option you have selected is only available with certain mics. Out of interest, which mic are you using?
Thank you, yes you are right there, I probably should have just said that upfront and it would have made it a little more palatable 🙂 Getting some good constructive feedback today.
is it possible to not install a mic on the camera ? even if the sound is bad ? if yes, how ? (because on mine, i have no sound and i don't understand why ?)
@jadebazin Yeah, if you don't plug an external mic in then it will just fall back to the internal mics. Double check you don't have them muted and get the audio levels on your screen to check it is picking up sound 👉 th-cam.com/video/uehncUr1Lb0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sZfB6jj78vKSnCVC
Gday Steve - great stuff. um - I am thinking of using my zoom h1 recorder (mounted on small rig) for audio while filming. Im bit of a gumby with audio....so would a TRRS cable (double ended?) from gh6 MIc socket to the zoom output work fine? smarter than having to sync the audio in post? cheers :-)
Hey, the only reliable way I know to get the Zoom H1 to work with DSLRs or Mirrorless camera is to use a 3.5mm attenuator cable like the Movo RC100 - amzn.to/3Mb50ys But thats not to say it 100% won't work with a TRRS cable, I just haven't tried it. There are a few different versions of the H1 mic and a loads of audio settings in the camera so it would just a bit of trial and error. I would personally recommend just getting yourself a shotgun mic for the camera amzn.to/3T0qkch If you can stretch to a Rode mic, personally I think they are great but even the budget mics like the Boya and Movo are a massive improvement over the internal mic. Just always be sure to check out the reviews and do your research to make sure it suits the situations you want it for. You could still use your Zoom H1 separately as a second redundancy track, hopefully that helps.
Im using the Video Mic Rode NTG on a GH4. The problem I'm running into is that the audio has a lot of digital noise. I tried everything in the settings, found a level on the mic and the gh4 that have the least amount of digital noise, but you can still hear it clearly. Do you have any suggestions on what to do? did you run into the same problem with your rode mic on the gh6? Im using the trrs to trrs cable that came with the mic. If I plug my Rode Mic via usb C to my pc, it works flawlessly, super crispy sound. And also thank you for posting so many videos, they are super helpful, I've already learned a lot, subscribed! :D
Hi, thanks I really appreciate it, I am glad they have been useful! Now I don't have that camera or mic but you mention USB, so I assume it is the NTG5. I understand that mic has a 'smart' function for working out the device it is connected to. Personally, I would say try a standard 3.5mm TRS to TRS cable and see if that makes a difference. In regards to the audio settings I use, you can see them here - th-cam.com/video/9lKSEmFxxRI/w-d-xo.html hope you manage to get it sorted.
@@stevelitton Thank you for your quick answer! I dont have the ntg5, its just the "rode videomic ntg" (for around 200€). dB Levels and everything is ok. Its just the extreme noise only when I use it on the cam. Shouldnt be the TRRS to TRRS cable (that came with the mic and fits to both mic and camera ports) better than a TRS to TRS cable?? Or is less better in this case? And also regarding the GH6, did you run into any noise problems with your rode mic, noise or anything? Thinking about upgrading to the gh6 anyways (maybe xD)
@@themodelcarproject Ah ok, my experience of using TRRS cables with the GH5 and GH6 is that they just don't work. I mean they do fit and pick up sound, but the audio from them is not what you would expect. They are not 'better' cables, they just serve a different use case than a TRS cable. Typically you would use a TRRS cable for a tablet or smartphone. No, my Rode mics always sound clean, but again I only use Rode TRS to TRS cables when using them with a camera. The GH6 is a decent camera, it has a lot of good shooting modes and features, a nice step up from the GH4 for sure.
@@stevelitton Alright, thanks a lot for your information and your time, I will look on how to get it sorted. Maybe testing a passive attentuator or preamp would help too. Keep up the good work! :D
@@themodelcarproject No problem at all, hope you get it sorted. I do use an attenuator but only for connecting my Zoom mics, this is the one I use with it and I find that works pretty well - amzn.to/3UYNMI2 Thanks, appreciate the support 👍
I recently purchased the GH6 and the Sennheiser MKE 200 and I can't for the life of me get the thing to work. The audio is incredibly faint regardless of which cable I use, any suggestions, maybe something I'm missing in settings? I've duplicated what settings Steven is using but still no good.
Hi, first thing to check is that you are using a TRS cable and NOT a TRRS cable. So it should have two rings on the tip of the cable (Not 3). Also check you are not VFR mode as this does not record audio. The next thing would be to check your audio levels, I have a video on how to do that here - th-cam.com/video/9lKSEmFxxRI/w-d-xo.html It may be something like you have the internal gain set to 'low'. If that still isn't working then check out the 'Mic Socket' options as your mic may require power from the camera. I am afraid I don't own the mic so I can't give a concrete solution but hopefully one of those things works!
@@stevelitton thanks for the help, unfortunately it was just bad luck. I called B&H and they confirmed that I just got a defective mic. I’ll be bringing it back there and probably buying the 440, because after all it’s B&H and that’s what happens when you go there lol. Thanks again.
@@adidabax6809 yeah, it’s an amazing microphone. Apparently it was the microphone at fault. The 440 takes the guess work out of it as it has the one connection.
gday mate.....me again lol. Just setting up/ checking my audio with the GH6 in combo with zoom h1, smartLav's with splitters etc. As you say....need to use a TRS to make it work (eg. rode SC3)...yet interestingly....the specs say (atleast on B&H) that the Mic input iS TRRS? Either way.......the TRRS smartLavs TRRS work when I use TRS patch cables last into GH6 mic port or into the ZOOM H1 (via another TRS cable to GH6). interesting..... :-)
TRRS cables don't seem to work well on my Zoom H1, I tend to just avoid TRRS cables unless I am going directly in to a phone/tablet. Even then I generally tend to go for USB-C to USB-C with the Rode SC17 cable. I use the Rode Lavalier GO mics which have TRS jacks. I actually just made a video as someone was saying in the comments of this video that when you plug in a TRRS cable you actually get the 'Special Mic' option in the menu and when you change it from 'stereo' to 'shotgun' it seems to start working as it should. Bit bizarre but it seems to do the job.
@@stevelitton ah...good one. yes....'specail mic' works with direct TRRS cables once you plug them in. that makes more sense...had to be a reason why the ports were labelled TRRS on the specs. sometimes i wonder why LUMIX (?) instructions arent clearer? yeah - zoom h1 are spec'd as TRS.
