For this Top 10, we’re looking at the soundtracks that really pushed the system to its limits: the ones that achieved a richness that went beyond our expectations of a 16-bit console and are still talked about today. We’re only considering soundtracks that got an official Western release, so as fantastic as Seiken Densetsu 3 or Secret of Mana 2’s soundtrack was, it’ll have to sit out this time around.

Morphic c Thank you. Super Castlevania 4 is (IMMHO) the best soundtrack on the SNES. Even not being number 1, it is definitely a top 10 warrant.
Forest of Monsters, Treasury Room, the secret room, the waterfalls, the end credit song all of them. A true masterpiece soundtrack, Dracula X is a good game but the soundtrack to me is just a cheap remix of all the castlevania songs.

Many SNES games had amazing soundtracks. The sound chip in the SNES really was amazing for its time. Many talented composers also took advantage of this hardware.
Donkey Kong Country Water theme is my fav SNES music.
Aquatic Ambience? Yup, it's the first song on my playlist.

Castlevania X and not Super Castlevania IV? Are you serious? Castlevania X only revamps the music from the NES games. Super Castlevania IV has a totally original score. The music in SC IV is not only original but also beautiful, one of the best soundtracks from the 16 bit era. Also, instead of Ninja Turtles IV, I would have added the music from Space Megaforce.

super mario rpg should be in the top 3, that is one of the most iconic and unique soundtracks ever, almost all songs are amazing and have their unique feeling, having it as just honorable mention is bizarre

Dammit why does Terranigma always get overlooked. It has awesome gameplay, amazing soundtrack and everything, yet on things like this it is always overlooked and forgotten. One of my all time favorite games for the snes as well :(
Also Shadowrun, Secret Of Evermore, Illusion Of Gaia, Breath Of Fire 1 & 2, to name but a few games with awesome Soundtracks.

For me, Chrono Trigger's OST is the best soundtrack in SNES library. Donkey Kong is good, but not nearly as immersive.

FUCK yes, DKC2 at first place! It totally deserves it, it's definitely in the top 5 soundtracks I've ever heard. If it was any lower, I would've been mad.
I think Super Mario World should've been replaced with Yoshi's Island and be higher up on this list though, because it was honestly better.

The 16-bit era was the golden age of gaming soundtracks. Seriously, music was just _better_ then. Even on PC it was- compare the Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness soundtrack to, well, _any_ other RTS soundtrack that came after it and there's no comparison.
The "one entry per franchise" rule bites down hard- you're basically legally obligated to put FFVI on the list because Mystic Quest was such a joke of an actual _game_ compared to it... but I personally think the Mystic Quest soundtrack is better, despite the lack of a 20-minute final boss track (then again, just _listen_ to the Dark King's theme, dammit!).
The honourable mention for Lufia II was fantastic, but neglecting to mention either Terranigma OR Illusion of Gaia (I think Illusion of Gaia's soundtrack is actually marginally better, although Terranigma was the better game) is heinous.

Your comment reminded me of a video from one of my favorite channels. Have you heard of Extra Credits? I'd recommend searching for their video "Extra Credits: Video Game Music". I think you'll find it interesting.
StarCraft and Red Alert has better soundtracks imo :) Not a bad word about WC2 though.

+efaustus9 Yes. I know everyone's taste(s) aren't arguable, but sincerely, a worldwide vote would never, ever, place TMNT above Metroid.
And they forgot Kiki Kai Kai (Pocky & Rocky), Soulbad(z)er, Actraisers 2, Super R-Type. Even the Ganbare Goemon quartet has to be mentioned, among many, many others softs blessed with top-notch tunes.

Finally a number 1 pick I can completely agree with. DKC2 did not only have memorable and catchy tunes but the sound quality was also unrivalled on the SNES. Quality over quantity, that's why DKC2 ultimately beats Chrono Trigger and FF VI.
@Lavos DKC2 was both quality and quantity. There isn't a bad tune in its soundtrack.

Glad DKC2 was number one, I freaking love that soundtrack. I really love that last song they played at the end of the video, the stage with the blowing wind. That music is so soothing *le sigh* DKC1's soundtrack was great as well, I love those two games. Those were the games that made me wish I had an SNES as a kid. Had to go to my friends house to see DKC, Super Metroid, etc.
In Brazil, it is a blasphemy to leave out the Top Gear series in this list!!
All I could think the whole time was, "where the hell is DKC2?" You guys gave it the top spot and I couldn't agree more. Phenomenal soundtrack, well done!

The funny part is the last game you featured in your video, "Tetris Attack", would have made my list.
The other funny part is that among the 10 games in this countdown, I've only played 3 of them; 2 which I'm great at.
Battletoads Double Dragon!?? God when that intro kicks in me and my bro get soooo pumped before playing it! The ost is sooo awesome. Also i have Donkey Kong Country 2's Mine Melancholy ost as my ringtone lol.

Great list! Played every one of these and loved them all! I definitely would have added Street Fighter II to this list, though.
If I did this, Lufia II would be at the no.1 spot. Although the SNES was amazing. Just thinking of how they wrote and composed these songs with the hardware limitations they were working with is amazing.

No joke. Dracula X was heavily criticized, in part for its derivative and homogeneous soundtrack. On the other hand, the music of Castlevania IV is widely called out as the gem that it is.

Yes. The overall soundtrack of Turtles in Time stood above Final Fantasy, which had a few _very_ strong tunes and some "meh" ones.

Nobody ever puts Plok or Equinox in these top 10s and they should at least have had an honourable mention. Their soundtracks were awesome.

Storm Eagle!!...And Bramble Blast. I think those are the only two soundtracks I have in my music collection. I remember receiving a VHS tape from Nintendo promoting the original DKC back in the day.
Super Metroid is definitely my favourite! The music is great and it matches the environments, such as the calmness of Crateria, the hellish Norfair, or the before and during of bosses.
Super Metroid soundtrack is definitely better than Turtles in Time.

No ActRaiser and UN Squadron at least honorably mentioned puts a tear in my eye. In terms of pure OST's for SNES Games, both of those are legendary in my opinion.

I remember half of these soundtracks to this day and I still sorta tap my foot to the beat of it XD. I say Link to the Past, Star Fox, F-Zero, Super Mario and some others is one of the most memorable for me :P

Nearly all of Earthbound's tracks are sampled, so while they're good, it might be cheating to have them make the list.
Lol you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Nearly all the tracks, apart from a direct reference here and there, are purely original creations. When we talk about Earthbound's tracks and say that they feature samples, it mostly means that they comport some 3 seconds loop somewhere, modified, and, more often than not, impossible to identify. Besides, most of the really important reocurring themes don't even feature any samples, and are not sampled in anyway whatsoever.
