If you are on a slope, put something underneath your sleeping mat to stop you from sliding down. Generally underneath your knees. Same with if you're falling off the sides, put a jacket to balance the mat.

Hi Gav, wow that's a long time! As Stu asked, any particular reason why so long? Long trip or more of a lifestyle choice? I've not been to Dartmoor for a few years now, I recall falling into a watery hole in the ground up to my waist and it was also the first time I had to navigate out of a whiteout (somewhere around Yes Tor I believe) so it was quite an experience 😄 Thank you, so glad you like them and have a lovely evening :) Claire

  • @FloridaPete1948
    @FloridaPete1948 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Nice lil video Claire. Nice sunset view. Bummer you didn't have a good camera.
Regarding the slippery "slope" problem 😁 I came up with this idea 30+ years ago.(I'm still camping at 73 and just bought a new 10x10ft silnylon tarp)
I modify it to fit my needs depending on the particular trip.
One thing remains constant: Whatever sleep system "components" I have selected all go inside a lightweight fleece blanket that zips into a 60x180cm "bag"
This past winter I tent camped in nearby Glacier National Park in NW Montana USA(see link below).
The floor was packed snow/ ice. The temperature dropped from day time of around -5C to -12C the following morning.
My fleece bag contained an OLD semi-inflatable Thermorest, a 60x180 piece of "reflectorix" (similar to the one you were sliding on), and a standard 5cm thick 60x180 air mattress.
Neither my sleeping bag, even the "slick" nylon taffeta one(s), nor my bivy sack(if used) slide on that fleece bag! 👍👍
Warm nights I just use the air mattress inside the fleece bag. The bag helps prevent punctures as well.
Could the condensation have come from all that VEGETATION you were in "transpiring" water vapor overnight?
Sorry, but I had to laugh when I saw where you pitched that tarp---that brush would be TICK CITY around here! Ticks creep me out.😒
And then sliding around on that reflectorix!! 😂😁👍👍
    Love you videos Claire!!
Your gettin' out there trying new things and DOING IT. Well Done!
Too many folks are just sitting around "pickin' their nose" and wishing they were out there with you! 😎
    Pete
Pics of my campsite in Glacier National Park. Sorry, none of sleep system. :( I didn't put that together until after eating my dinner.)

Retraced your Rhinogs two day trip at the weekend, did it in two days and one night. You were right sbout the non existent paths its was literally bearing from stile to stile. Fantastic weather though!!

Hi Claire, Sorry to hear about the breakages. If you cannot get the tripod repaired and have to buy a new one you should have a look for one that allows the legs to splay a bit wider than usual. There are quite a few out there, including lightweight travel tripods. You will lose a few inches in height but the wider base formed by the feet will give you much greater stability. I have a K&F Concept and it is excellent.

    👍😊.
Something I learned on a Long Weekend Tent Camp over 45 years ago .. DON'T set up on a slope.
    * If it is in any way possible to slide, you will.
    * Trying to sleep head on the down slope does not work.
    * Sleeping with head at the open, up slope entrance (it was an old style canvas pup tent .. still have it .. and the entrance was the only decent source of Oxygen .. 3 minutes without and .. 😏). Also not a good idea. Fibrositis in the shoulder as a result thereof, with no muscle pain medication at hand, made for a loooong weekend.
    Survived, but nor forgotten 😊.
    Take care ..

Camping amidst the shrubbery?? I wonder if the shrubberies are from Roger the shrubber? Sorry, couldn't resist that MPFC reference :-D Neat little spot for sure and the view?? Amazing! Sorry about your camera and tripod.

Better to break gear than bones! Though bones do heal, and gear doesn't. I'm glad you were suitably entertained when you couldn't sleep. Hillside camping is always a bit of a challenge, but I think you handled it really well! The Kalimba is a nice addition. Some instruments take away more than they add for camping ambiance in my book, but the Kalimba is subtle and unobtrusive. Ridge lines can be a challenge for sure. I tend to use the loop-and-toggle on one end, and either a truckee hitch (trucker's hitch with an extra pass through the standing loop to prevent slippage until you tie off), or a very useful hitch called a Faramond hitch that works much like a prusik knot, but can be easily tied anywhere on a line, and you tuck the remainder of your line through the locking loop to keep things nice and tidy too. I hope the repairs aren't too costly and you have your kit back, good as new in no time.

@@WildBeare oh crikey is it really difficult? Only thing I’m worried about is my backpack is so heavy as I’m camping for two days! Only reason I chose the Watkin Path is because of the waterfalls and plunge pools so I can have a dip 😊

@@kjdempsey well the section at the top is real steep scrambling, very exposed, and there's a fair bit of lose scree. I almost turned back about 20 minute below the summit because it's sketchy as hell, and like you I had my giant overnight rucksack so I wasn't very nimble. It was far, far scarier than I'd anticipated and not one to do if you have a bad fear of heights or of falling. Having said that, I did make the summit in the end, with the encouragement of others. The waterfalls and pools are on the low section though so they're easy to visit :) Have you done any of the other paths up? Watkin is the hardest aside from the ridge scramble Crib Gogh. I've done Miners & Pyg, they're great as they're challenging but you don't feel like you might fall to your death haha
