    Thank you for a very informative helpful video. I have a deep at the bottom of skylight (on a flat roof) and it is there where water pools. I have been told that there is an issue with structure...that perhaps on installing the roofer-skylight installer removed too much from the structure....that i need to replace....and resolve structure....What do you think Mr.Bergstromm shall we remove the skylight, fix structure....place that black thick membrane, that flat-roofers apply with torching and then re-install the skylight...? I am grateful for any advice. Thanks!

    Thank you !!!! My roof is actually a slant although not standard, still a slant. This method is amazing !!!!! Super Silicone is fantastic. It easily goes on with a brush, but it's somewhat self-leveling so it gets in where it needs to, but at the same time, it doesn't run everywhere either. It's just the perfect consistency. I may do another coat as it mentions on the can, because the fleese really soaks up a lot. I doubt it will ever leak, but I opened the can of super silicone, only have a couple of other little projects, I might as well use it up.

    The reason there is condensation between the layers of acrylic is cause the seal around the perimeter is defective. The cost of the skylight that size is minimal. (approximately $350-$400 for a Velux double dome) Skylights like that will last approximately 25 years. If the seal is not repaired properly the skylight will leak on the inside of the curb causing a lot more damage than just replacing it.

    You don't know skylights. They atr designed for the water to run under the flange and out weep holes on the frame.
    Never do what this guy is doing. Take off the flange, repair the frame, and reasemble. This won't last. How do I know? I did it twenty-five years ago. Lasted three years. Had to fix the frame.

  • @billhamilton2366
    @billhamilton2366 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the obvious condensation under the top layer of the plexi, it is clear that the seal between the two layers of plexi is leaking moisture and is no longer sealed. This method of "sealing out the weather" and water is NOT a fix. It is crap. This guy is just trying to make a buck and take off.

    This video shows that this product can be used on plexiglass, but my skylights have standard glass not plexiglass. I see that you answered a question below that this product will work on any material, including standard glass. So my updated question is: is it okay to SAND standard glass - which you recommend doing as part of prep in the above video? Thanks for the excellent demo.

    • @carllennen3520
      @carllennen3520 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NO.
      This man is showing people how to destroy the roof holding the skylight up.
      For glass skylights you use DowSil 795 caulk. You MUST clean it with 99% alcohol prior to caulking it.
      I pray that you did not take this mans advise. This is shoddy work, and will create a VERY expensive problem later on.

    • @susantau
      @susantau ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@carllennen3520 hey thanks for this tip! I did not follow the instructions given in this video because he never replied to confirm if this method was suitable for glass. So what I did was just caulk the skylight lenses with "DAP Alex Plus All Purpose Acrylic Latex Caulk plus Silicone 40 year" . When it comes time to replace that (I fear that's soon, I live in SE AZ), I should clean the old caulk off completely with alcohol? I only have 91% isopropyl... is there a 99%? Thanks again for the info. I never totally feel worry-free about my three skylights that will leak without extra cautionary steps.

    • @carllennen3520
      @carllennen3520 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Susan Taunton yes, you will have to replace that soon. It's just not a long term solution for glass skylights.
      Yes, they do sell 99% alcohol. You have to get it from construction suppliers. You can find them in any major city. They will also sell the DowSil 795 caulk. 91% alcohol will work just fine, it just takes longer for it to evaporate and become completely dry. DO NOT use denatured alcohol. It has an oil in it and won't allow the caulk to adhere properly, and will create leaks.
      Yes, you need to clean all of the old caulk off before recaulking. Use razor blades to scrape it off, then use the alcohol to clean the glass AND the metal. The alcohol not only breaks down the old caulk, but also removes all chemical residue that can stop the caulk adhering properly.

    • @susantau
      @susantau ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carllennen3520 Wow, thank you so much for this guidance -- your ideas make solid sense, And wow is it hard to get clarity on this particular topic. Normally the weep holes in the skylights would have been the solution, but our roofer plugged them up inadvertently, so now I'll have to keep on top of caulking these skylight lenses for the rest of my life in this house. Good to know at least the right way to do that! So I will look for the 99% alcohol, the DowSil 795 and follow your instructions to the tee. 🙏🏽

    • @carllennen3520
      @carllennen3520 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Susan Taunton if there is any way to locate the weep holes, you should definitely do that, and take a knife or a screwdriver, and try to open them back up. They don't just allow leak water out, but also condensation. I think you said you lived in the desert, so condensation shouldn't be a huge problem, but it's best to have those weeps open.
      I build commercial skylights for a living.

    Is that how the manufacturer did it with silicone top caulk? The first thing is there is way too much condensation on the inside (first bubble). Pool? Remove bubble and aluminum frame. Separate the frame from acrylic bubble. Clean frame of old butyl caulk tape. Clean bubble with xylene solvent and frame. Install 1" butyl caulk tape and caulk corner splice with butyl caulk. Join frame and bubble. Install to curb.

    • @FlatRoofDoctor
      @FlatRoofDoctor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, why do you expect me to fix it the way the manufacturer did it in the 1 st place, it failed?
      The condensation is from a indoor swimming pool.
      I am showing videos for homeowners to DIY. You want them to not do it because it is too cumbersome. Your way would work, till next time. My way will work till a new Acrylic Bubble is needed to be replaced. Which one do you think people will choose?

      i think this is the problem. You are correct to say it is Condensation. But, there should not be any condensation because it is a double layer of plexi glass. I think the seal that that was suppose to keep the air tight in between the 2 layers is broken letting that insulating air become cold causing condensation on the bottom layer. These plexi glass seals between the layers are not well done from my experience.
