But they responded that blacks offered no different service than others and that if there was a black Chick-Fil-A the service would be the same as those in white areas. When I was in Marine Corps basic training every platoon had to go through a week of mess duty. For winning the drill competition our platoon was given the prestigious mess duty at a high ranking mess hall in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Normally recruit platoons would complete mess hall training at their own mess hall on Parris Island, South Carolina. We were told we would be held to a higher standard as we would have British Marines and other nation's soldiers eating there as they trained with our troops throughout the year. Luckily for us one of our recruits parents owned a restaurant and he knew all about regulations for cleaning. He taught us all of the places they'd be looking during inspections and showed us some tips and tricks, like using Gojo hand cleaner to wipe down stainless steel equipment and make it shine like a new penny! We not only passed every inspection (which we heard was rare) but our platoon was given a letter of commendation for outstanding duty. Our drill instructors couldn't have been prouder! They went much easier on us for the rest of the recruit training!
