I realize this video is very old, but I have a tip: If you add a small amount of water to the calcium sulfate and make “crumbles”, you can shake them above a sieve to remove any dust or small pieces. Then you dry them in two stages, first an hour at a temperature to remove the first water (to arrive back at plaster of Paris) then an hour at the higher temperature to get anhydrous. If you use these crumbles to dry things, it does not make a cloudy solution and settles out immediately. You just need to be aware that drying time is longer (if stirring) or shorter (if no stirring). I suggest allowing the solvent to dry with calcium sulfate overnight.
Condenser, round bottom flasks, hotplate stirrer - its literally all shown in the video, i dont know what else you need to be shown? like do you even understand what a distillation is?
Why can we not simply do 1 step instead of both? I mean, doing either the fractional distillation or adding that CaSO4 then distilling out the acetone after the CaSo4 has settled?
Yeah you don't have to. Can just stir with CaSO4 over night and distil straight out of that flask onto some fresh sieves (can add some fresh CaSO4 if you want before distilling).
Can I leave my calciumsulfat-Anhydrit into the bottle of acetone and filter off the amount I need when I need it, or does it create byproducts like Calciumchloride or MolecularSieves do ? I just need 100% anhydrous acetone regularly and I figure I need a way to "secure" my anhydrous acetone when I have it. Thanks!
hello i'm brazilian i would like to know if any type of acetone is used for this and if i have to mix and heat in jwh 18 to how many degrees do i have to heat?
I use 91% alcohol, rinse it in the sink faucet, and then do a final rinse with distilled water. I dry it with paper towels and then let it completely dry. If you eant to make sure it's completely dry, you can put it in a vacuum. But it'll pretty much be ready after the distilled water rinse. Anything left will be in the air and you won't be able to dry it more unless your work space is dehumidified. You can also let the glass dry naturally. Paper towels have never made a difference in my experience. Put it into a vacuum instead if you want to be safe. Just my experience though. I'm sure there are better "approved" ways.
Starting with already pure acetone (but sitting long in a glass bottle being freuqently opened), would it suffice to just dry it and then filter with Celite instead of distilling? The resulting purity is not as much of importance as removing the water content.
If you're only looking to remove the water, then this will work, too. Generally you should always distill after adding drying agent, but if the purity is not too important, I guess it also works your way.
Bake epsom salt on aluminum foil at 275 for 15 minutes. Scrape the epsom salt into the Acetone and it will absorb nearly all of the water. Use a turkey baster to quickly take acetone off of the top and get it into an air tight glass jar. You probably have 30 minutes before moisture gets back in,.
@@ashchambers2764 You really want to take your Magnesium Sulfate up to 450, starting at 200 and slowly raising it over time. Maybe 50°F every 45 minutes or so.
I can only find calcium sulfate dihydrate - does it take long in an oven to make anhydrous form? Is it possible to make anhydrous in an oven? Also what do you use as vacuum source? Many thanks.
Converting the dihydrate in the semihydrate or anhydrate is really easy: water starts to evaporate at temperatures as low as 100°C. I baked mine at 250°C for 45 min, but It doesn't have to be that hot, so yes you can definetely do it in an oven! I have a video on how to build a DIY vacuum pump on my channel. Hope that helps :D
ChemX Thanks a lot for answering my newbie questions. I found a simple vacuum pump attachable to water faucet - this will do for most of my filtration tasks. DIY vacuum pump tutorial would be awesome!
We got ourselves a fuckin comedian right here, goddamn! To answer your question, yes that is one use for this , but that would be proper illegal worldwide. Knowledge can be used for many different purposes, it all depends what one does with said knowledge. If you have knowledge of pressure points, you can kill people or hurt them, knowledge of explosives can help you make beautiful fireworks or you could also create explosives meant to kill or maim. Knowledge of atomic particles could help you create fission energy and solve the world's energy problems, or you could make a nuclear device and wipeout mankind. Knowledge about anything is never wrong in of itself. SO DONT BE DUMB. KNOW AS MUCH ABOUT EVERYTHING AS YOU CAN. NEVER STOP LEARNING.
isn't is better to put 2-5 mm MgSo4 saltgrains in the oven, and drop them into the bottle of acetone. So these christals fill themselvess with all the H2O? Sucking the fluid dry so to speak

Epsom salt works jut as good and plaster of Paris may have unknown additives depending on brand . Eosin salts comes pure and is easily available .
Just checking to see if "eosin" is a spelling error or not, and I'm assuming this is to be used instead of the calcium sulfate?
I wish you added in your comments the equipment you used

@shespeaks1971 Is seeking information from you because you are the teacher here. Why brow beat?
I looked for your video on how to set up for fractional distillation and did not find it. Can you share a link to that video?

Do you have any idea how to clean the glass? I know the basics of chemistry and have been using bleach but I feel like a lot is lost.

You're welcome!
Use baked magnesium sulfate(epsom salt)
Heard mag sulfate can cause explosions with acetone vapours
Yes
Please tell me that wasn't a plastic bottle you put that in
Heard of HDPE?
Why not use molecular sieves ? If only removing water
How much for 200ml of that.
Why would you need it to be 100% acetone, what are you using it for???
@Eric Konschuh for cleaning off sticky stuff. No one ever taught me about Acetone.
@Eric Konschuh o I gotcha
@Eric Konschuh so you could wash meth with it as well

Wash my cocaine from cuts and save my nose
Is this required if your Acetone is 100% pure?
Your acetone isnt 100% pure
so i can use py powdered caso4 as a drying agent
Yes
Will this work with magnesium sulfate?
You can use magnesium sulfate to dry Acetone, but calcium sulfate has a much higher affinity for water, so the acetone will be drier if you use CaSO4.
Bluntski yes, thats the most comonly used to dry acetone.
That’s dry? Looks wet to me
Are you and Postapocalyptic Inventor the same person :D
They are Siamese twins
Can I use Magnesium Sulfate Anhydrous instead of Anhydrous Calcium Sulfate? Are they the same or different? #newbie
Und für was brauchst du das?
Magnesium sulfate is better
Cacl2???
I find a chemist friend. I have enough chemical
