i restored a Hilti 150-U core rig, the stand has a base that seals down with vacuum pressure, im not buying one from Hilti they over price them,,i have about $800.00 in the core drill & stand,,they sell for 6-grand new including the water vacuum so the compressor conversion that you did should work on a small RYOBI i have & Hilti wont drain my pocket! (thankx-CX)

You probably have ethanol impurities in your product. Ethyl bromide gets cloudy after a water wash only if there's ethanol present.

What would happen if you diluted the acid with the water first, let that cool, then add the KBr, let the KHSO4 precipitate, then distill?

My comment is when we go to full replacement of fossil fuels in the future we will fuel our long haul truckers with diethyl ether produced from molten salt thorium reactors and be no more expensive for the truckers of the future than our diesel today. About a thousand dollars to fill a 500 gallon fuel tank with diethyl ether with molten salt thorium reactors for the process heat source. Instead of ancient sunlight for energy, modern atomic power will be the driving force.

Yes, I thought I'd do this too, but when I opened it up it turned out there was no "inlet port", it seems to suck air in through "the back", ie where the crank rod goes into the "piston". Something you can't tell til you've got it home and taken it apart. And the outer plastic case looked identical, so there is no clue whether you are going to get a modifiable one or not.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but that kind of piston doesnt make very much vacuum. Yeah, it might make some vacuum, but it is pretty far from real vacuum. Almoust all of those kind of small and sheap 12v compressors are made all like the same. And the piston is the thing! It is made to suck ear thrue it when coming down, but keep the pressure whiel going up. I guess you know what I mean? It is pretty easy to see, if you watch the "piston ring" seal. It's shape is what it is, and it is not mean to make vacuum. PS. Sorry and more sorry to disappoint your vacuum pump project.. Thats how I see this thing.

Good idea ! But you should have use micro bore fittings, they would have fitted perfek ;) These pumps are 12V, it will work better with the power it was designed for !

Nice thing, I had the same Idea and your Video explains everything, what I needed to know. Just don't see the reason why cut of the Tube and removed the PSI-meter, as It would still have been usable as a regular compressor too. Btw. I am not going to use it as Vacuum pump, but to compress Gasses, like H2 and O2 into tanks, Like Cody did on Cody's lab, just without the trouble of having to capsule the whole thing into a bottle, like he did it. Therefore this mini-compressor seems to be the cheapest solution.

I realize this video is very old, but I have a tip: If you add a small amount of water to the calcium sulfate and make “crumbles”, you can shake them above a sieve to remove any dust or small pieces. Then you dry them in two stages, first an hour at a temperature to remove the first water (to arrive back at plaster of Paris) then an hour at the higher temperature to get anhydrous. If you use these crumbles to dry things, it does not make a cloudy solution and settles out immediately. You just need to be aware that drying time is longer (if stirring) or shorter (if no stirring). I suggest allowing the solvent to dry with calcium sulfate overnight.

My Idea is to put the whole pump in a Case and make some insulation wool between for more silence and some holes. Have to try it on my own.
