To have a channel like this is a dream come true for the 62 year old child in me lol I love reliving these moments in my life, thanks Dan, you're the best!!
My favorite memory of the animated series is an ape driving in his pickup truck and on the radio was that country music hit - “I’m going humanoid over you”.
I actually just received this DVD collection as a Christmas gift. I grew up in that 1970s, Mego era, and I loved this show. Thank you so much for this video!
I remember watching this when it first aired and thinking the animation reminded me of Marvel Superheroes' style. Not a whole lot of action but enough camera tricks and moving mouths to give it life. Your commentary on that aspect of the series sort of backs that up. It was like the Marvel show, just given an artistic upgrade via Doug Wildey.
It always seemed that these Saturday morning shows lasted a lot longer than they did. But when you're 5-10 time is definitely different from 40-50 years old. 😂
I was just barely 10 years old when the cartoon series aired, but because I was already I dedicated PotA fan, I was thrilled, and never missed an episode! Thank you for the retrospective.
This is quickly becoming my favorite channel. I remember watching this series on Saturday morning. My clearest memory was laughing at an ape driving in a pickup truck listening to a song on the radio with the lyrics, "I'm going humanoid over you".
DePatie-Freleng. Y'know? Freleng? As in Friz Freleng? One of the greatest Warner Bros. cartoon directors. The same company that produced Pink Panther. As for the executives, my good guess is that they were responding to pressure groups of the time. That's why many of the 70s' cartoons were bland and always had a moral lesson. Filmation was huge on this. Your channel must be the most professional I have ever watched. I don't know if you're scripted but I appreciate you cutting to the chase of information. Many is the time when I watch other channels and wait 3 to 5 minutes as they hem & haw and speak off the top of their heads before they get to the reason I am watching. I find most my favorite channels are somewhat polished but yours is the best...and your voice is very pleasing.
I was older than the average kid. I was 16 in 1975. I remember the show well. The animation was sub-par because this was during the Dark Ages of American Animation that started were Warner Brothers closed Termite Terrace, their animation studio as a cost-cutting measure. I think this was due to Hanna-Barbera's dominating the market with their cheaper animation. The Apes didn't have airplanes of their own. In fact, the airplane they had, a WWII vintage P-40 Warhawk was found by Ape Archeologists and restored to flying condition with the purpose of capturing humans with a cargo net slung under the plane. I know because this was my favorite episode.

Great video review! HUGE Return fan! I love that cartoon. I remember watching it back in 75 when I was just in the 1st grade. I remember in the 90's when the Sci-Fi channel re-aired the series on Sunday mornings. That was the first time I had watched the show since childhood. Then in 2006 I got the dvd set. Just love it. Watched it a dozen times over, plus 2. ;) Like I said, a huge fan. I make my own custom Mego Apes based on the cartoon. When I start my youtube channel, I will spotlight them and a playset I'm building. Great channel and keep up the good work.

Hi Dan, Loving the channel. Hits the sweet spot between length - just right - and being engaging without coming across like a Wiki-dump. Here in the UK we had quite a few of the same shows, but rarely in the correct order or indeed their entirety (The Monkees being a prime example. Or should that be primate example?😂) Anyhow, keep up the great hit rate. Can I just put Carnival of Souls out there? That's got to be on your radar, right?
I loved the cartoon! I still have memories of the apes driving the army trucks and over their radio is a song, "I'm going Humanoid over you!" It was a country western song.
I saw one episode while on vacation as a 5-year old kid (it didn't play in my rural area) and for years thought I'd dreamed it until I discovered the show years late.
This show debuted the very same week I turned four years old, and I have a few fuzzy memories of watching it and thinking it was the most exciting thing I had ever seen. I can also remember seeing the playsets for sale at the toy store and staring at the big wide boxes in absolute awe. A handful of the things that appealed to you as a very young child can stick with you forever!
It didnt stop having merchandise in the 70s. Adventure Comics had a whole bunch of mini series and a full series from the late 80s into the mid 90s. They even crossed over with Alien Nation.
I seem to remember the show being on earlier. I was 7 and was on a kids bowling league that I had to go to immediately after it was over. I probably would have dropped out if I had to miss it! I actually enjoy the animation
2:58 - Hey, when you talk about Jonny Quest - could you bring up Peggy Charren and her organization that neutered action cartoons for years to come? Lots of younger folk don't seem to be much aware of her reign of terror.
(For some material on that, look up "Almanac Extra: Children's Television (1987) Part 1" and "Almanac Extra: Children's Television (1987) Part 2" at Internet Archive. Sound isn't all that great, but hoo boy... showcases some of the damage she did as well as how dishonest her supporters were)
Great episode, Dan ! DePatie Freleng (pronounced Dee Patty Free Ling) were the geniuses behind classic cartoons like Pink Panther, Inspector Clouseau, The Ant and the Aardvark, and other greats. They traditionally had a relatively high-quality animation on those characters.... But Doug Wildey's art style was so detailed that they couldn't adapt it to fully rendered animation, so they utilized "Limited Animation " which utilized individual elements being animated against a static background of character plate. Usually, mouths, eyes, one arm, and usually a walk cycle for each character that would use the same 12 to 24 frames and loop them for walking lasting several seconds. Limited animation gradually took over classical television animation by the early 80s until studios started farming out animation to Japanese animation studios.
The style of animation reminds me of the Filmation works like Star Trek the Animated Series. A lot of eyes, mouths, and arms moving as well as reused cells from episode to episode, especially in running scenes or attack scenes.
God I haven't seen that since it was originally shown on Saturday mornings When I was a wee lad The marvel comic was great they had some good storylines and great artwork Love Jonny quest looking forward to your video on that classic

Well done as usual. Somehow at 5 in 75’, I missed this entire show. Despite loving these films and the series.
I remember watching part of one episode. All I remember was they were driving around in a 2 1/2 ton truck. Sliding on a muddy road.
You've done it again Dan, thanks for helping me remember some of the best parts of my childhood, keep bringing that cool stuff 🙂
Love the new opening - especially the Pal Martian!
Another great topic! Thank you Dan!
I seem to remember the show being on earlier. I was 7 and was on a kids bowling league that I had to go to immediately after it was over. I probably would have dropped out if I had to miss it! I actually enjoy the animation
Can't get enough!! THANK YOU ❤️ 😊
2:58 - Hey, when you talk about Jonny Quest - could you bring up Peggy Charren and her organization that neutered action cartoons for years to come?
I loved it I never missed it and even watched it and reruns and I have them on DVD
Great job, you are leaving no stone unturned.Proud to say I own this series on disc.
