We sold our house in Hampshire, England and decided to move to Portugal. We bought a Land Rover and agreed whatever we couldnt fit in the car, we would just give away to family, friends and neighbours. We gave away pretty much every thing we had accumulated over twenty years together, except clothes, laptops, a stereo a few precious mementos and our music collection. It felt incredibly liberating as we drove onto the ferry to Santander. Literally a few weeks later, we had found a house to rent in Alentejo and a home to buy and renovate. The following months were spent buying many of those self same possessions we had so recently given away. New life, new home and new things. That was in 2002. The house was finished in 2003, but there are always other projects. We will NEVER leave our beautiful home in Portugal. We both agree that letting go of our old lives was the best thing we ever did and we still have our old Land Rover.

I have 2 pair of jeans 2 shoes some underwear a notebook and that's all albuns photos were all digitalized... at the end all disapear and it's OK, we are just a dust in the wind... after we're gone, only few people will remember and feel sad, the rest will forget us like in 2 weeks or less... the only thing we can leave to people is some type o knowledge or a legacy 🙏

@Daphna, I found your channel today and I’ve been binging through it. Thank you!
I left my former home with what I could fit in a van, and I have since given away even some of those things. For the last couple of years, I’ve been living a nomadic life, and I’ve realized I don’t need those items, which now fit in a two-meter by two- meter space. I travel for months with a carry-on bag and a briefcase. It’s liberating! I hope to leave the US and settle down in Europe soon, but for now, these boots were made for walking.

I am so engaged. I am in my 50's and just gave away almost all of my belongings. You are right I had paid storage fees for a total of about 5 years. When I decided to do this, I too went through everything. I looked at each item and asked myself is this a reminder of a time you have moved past? Most things I did not want to bring into my new life, so I donated everything except what I could fit into my suv that I chose to keep. It is weird not having things but regreshing a freeing at the same time. I need to work on income streams. I procrastinate but after decluttering have more gumpshin to get started. I began 2 projects a day ago. I think once I can see the benefit the less procrastination. New sub.

I also never really identified with my original country in South America and decided to move away during my forties to settle in Europe. To do so I got rid of everything I owed (I sold/gave) and retained just the very essential to me, both emotionally and materially (believe it or not, it all fits in two medium-sized suitcases). When I'm around my 60s, I plan to finally settle down somewhere as a minimalist, a style that I embraced for the rest of my life. You have an amazing channel: keep carrying on! 🍀💐

I enjoy your insightful and carefully curated videos. I’m in my 50s and based in Europe but have homes in three countries and connections with four, none of which are the land of my birth. As I grow older, I’m finding material possessions increasingly burdensome and am gradually clearing out and letting go. So my focus now is on decluttering and simplifying a life that has grown increasingly complex. It’s not just the unnecessary cost of accumulating objects that are seldom used, it’s the emotional capital of administering it all which consumes valuable time and energy. I try to remember that when life finally ends, you can’t take so much as a ring with you.

Daphna, I came across your content during a particularly challenging phase in my life. We're around the same age, and I've been feeling quite discontent with my current living situation, especially since my daughter relocated to Europe for her studies. Your words provided me with valuable insights and comforted me, reminding me that I'm not the only one going through these emotions. I hope that soon I will have the courage to take the first steps toward relocating back to Europe, where I truly feel I belong.

I am planning to declutter over the next few weeks too, as one of the steps to prepare. Your honest and open insights are very inspiring to me. I did the same as you, moving to Portugal when the time was right. I sold/give all things away before and bring only the essentials with me.
There was things everywhere in my house. But in our age things has less value and now it is more about enjoying the day, and when all the things are gone it gives a bit of relief.
You would regrett it later if you don´t do it now when you have these thoughts, opportuniy and energy!. Later it is always easy to move back if it doesn't work out well.
Also Portugal is a great choice. For me It is as you think and described in one of your previous videos.
    Good Luck!

This is so nice to see, I am very excited that you're starting a new life in another part of the world. I hope you're able to find your new home in Portugal! I feel the same in the United States, I am unhappy with the current political climate and how the culture here in the Washington DC area is all about your career. I plan on retiring early and going back to Mexico, where I was born. The older I get the more I realize how important being close to my family is. I wonder if I will have that emotional process when I decide to clear out my personal belongings.

Daphna - I am looking forward to hearing how your journey goes. I am 73 years old and intend moving forward in my life , but not sure yet where my right place is. Briefly, I am British ,but after a 47 year dysfunctional marriage I ended up staying with family in the US . I later married , but sadly things haven't worked out . I have never been to Portugal, but it seems like a great 'fit' for me and I am seriously contemplating visiting as soon as I am able . I would be interested to know the parts of Portugal you like best and why those places appeal to you. I admire your passion and courage and wish you all the best in your adventure.

I bought an apartment in Lisbon, but a few months later I discovered Madeira. Now I'm here in Madeira and I'm in the process of buying a home here, I prefer Madeira over any other place I have traveled so far in my life. I wish you lots and lots of fun, I know people say luck but you don't need luck, I think Intelligence is more useful than luck, (Luck doesn't last forever) and from the looks of it, you have lots of intelligence so have no worries. In the last few years I have moved several times - Dubai, Thailand, Germany, Austria and back to Thailand again. I'll never pack a container again. There are always problems at customs, where you have to buy your property freely. I made the last two moves with two suitcases, rented furnished apartments until I finally moved into a house and gradually settled in. new and used items for the furnishings. If I had to move again now, two suitcases would be enough. the containers and delivery costs add up. You can save yourself that and use the money for the necessary furnishings

Hi Daphna, You did not reply? When in High School. I read Exodus motivated me to go to Israel. I met students and teachers from all over the world. I hitch hiked the country with soldiers' protection, worked on Kibbutizm, and became a stronger person. Very tuff life then in Israel. One of the characters in the book was Daphna. In 1987 with my teenage son immigrated as a single mother to work as a dental assistant and learn Hebrew. My son wanted to go back to the States. Went again to Israel 1998 when we vacationed in Florence, Italy, with my Israeli partner. So this is why I have no fear of traveling or relocating to a different country. Most of my life I felt uncomfortable in America. My son married a Ukranian/Bulgarian woman. They live in Varna, Bulgaria, with my teenage grandchildren who were born in the States, raised in BG. They speak English, Russian Bulgarian so far. Ciao

How do we pronounce your name, Dap nah, Daf nah? I'm also curious as how the Portuguese say your name because my name is David but the Portuguese always address me as DaVEED and the ph in your name would really confuse the Portuguese

My name is pronounced "DAF-nah." I've noticed that Portuguese pronunciation can sometimes be quite different from English, as you mentioned with your name

David is not a Portuguese name but people in Portugal know it because it have seen it more over the years. Especially with the children of Portuguese people who immigrated to other countries decades ago. So people pronounce it that way, they are used to it. I don’t think her name is as popular in Portugal so just don’t think they have a way of saying it, like yours.
