    There are different opinions about powder coating your bullets, I believe that the number one reason is affordability, the expense of getting set up with lube/size machine, also dies, and punches are costly. powder coating takes away most of that cost is the fact that simple size dies with punches are available from Lee. So, all you need to make quality cast bullets is the mold, the size die punch combo, the Powdercoat, and a second-hand toaster oven. anyone with the desire to make bullets can do this without a lot of playing around trying this and that. Plus, if you like your gun to stay cleaner while shooting, powder-coated bullets don't leave a waxy film on your firearm. Good series Elvis -Dave

    Man Elvis, you were paying some careful attention to these coating sessions, in order to grade the bullets like you have. That's awesome, because it helps others eliminate some of these "fussy" powders, without having to to buy them. We get to learn from your actions. Thank You. I'm just getting into this bullet molding and PC'ing thing, as I want to save money training, without leading up my barrels. This is also a super good way to make and store ammo for a rainy day... or SHTF..

    Thanks for taking the time to do this Elvis. I wasn't sure if I wanted to try this, until I watched your videos. My reason for trying PC, was leading. I shoot/reload 40 45 and 45 LC. I bought HF Red and Yellow. Cheap I know, Don't Judge Me!! LOL Tried them out and had zero leading. I size my cast bullets before PC. Since HF doesn't make red or yellow anymore, tried white and black. I did read HF black just wouldn't work. Still I tried it and yep wouldn't work. My last couple of batches I tried mixing the Black with the red, yellow and white just to use up the black. Red didn't mix well. Yellow was sort of usable, but the mix of white and black came out what I would call battleship grey. I used a couple of tablespoons of white and maybe a teaspoon of the black.

My first coat was thin, i should have added more powder, i did a 2nd coat and it worked great. Not bad for a first try. I'll have to try the ford light blue and super satin green and see how it compares.

    Just thought I would throw out there, that I ran a bunch of Cadillac blue powder,by Eastwood paint, on some .45 acp. On your "fussy" scale, I'd give it a 0-1, as the stuff coated with no effort, and came out gorgeous when baked. I have to chuckle, as in the ammo case they look like a bunch of blueberries,but the contrast against the brass and silver colored cases is really nice. I wish I could post some pics on here

    If you don't get good coverage with a powder just redo it with a powder that coats well.It will take. No need to throw them back for melting. If you want good results pre-heat the bare bullets In your oven at 200 for 5 mins.and let sit for another 5 mins.after the one minute tumble. You will be ahead of the game.

    I tried powder coating yesterday for the first time. Seemed to be working well in the toaster over that I got at a thrift store. I had it set at 400 and went into the house for some leftover thanksgiving pie. When I came out the bullets had gotten soft and a couple melted leaving the powder coat shell left on the screen. The oven thermostat didn't work correctly. It was kind of funny but stunk up the area a lot. I'll try it again with a different oven. Thanks for all the tips. I used the Eastwood light ford blue too.

    Have you ever used the glow in the dark powder coat paints? Do you think they would work like a poor mans tracer ammo? 🔫👍

    • @Accidic
      @Accidic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with glow in the dark powder or paint in general is the source. The strongest that I know of is a strontium based. Brighter glows are obtained with larger pieces. For best effect you'd want a light color (White is usually best) and you'd have to mix/coat it with a clear coat powder mixed with strontium glow powder of decent sized particle. Fortunately it's a little softer than copper so I would think it unlikely to damage barrels at least. The only time you're going to have a chance to see any kind of tracing effect it would have to be at night. Otherwise you'll see nothing different about them all. I wouldn't think any other glow options would be worth it personally but in fairness I've not tested it in this kind of application.

    I'm loving that chrome. I have to start getting picky because I have more powder then I will ever use 8n my lifetime. I still have .452's in the harbor freight red that I casted when I started. I did that before you found the ford light blue. I believe you were only using harbor freight powders then. I went on a casting frenzy and made 4,000 or so of them. I am almost out of them thank God. I wanted to use them all up before I started to cast more. I want to get a SWC HP mold for .452 and .358. I like the design. Great video I like the green and purple. I'm just going to have to buy a half pound. That should last my nephew untill he is 40 years old. He is going to get my reloading room when I kick the bucket. He seems to enjoy the process plus he likes the antique firearms. He would rather shoot my M1 carbine then my AR-15'S. That makes me happy. I hope all is well with you after my hand and elbow surgeries are done then in going to get to making videos on a more consistent schedule. Now it's whenever my hands want to work. I'm having some difficulties in typing now. Happy Safe Shooting.🇺🇸💪

    Hi elvis: So I did some more powder coating the last couple of days. I tried the dark PC that I got from you. I couldn't get it to stick again for full coverage. I then tried the light blue again and it woks great. Then I mixed blue and the dark and it worked pretty good. The more blue the better. I also did the low temp cook and it worked well too. At 200 it takes about 12 to 15 minutes to get good and shiny. Keep those tips coming :) L8R, Bri

    Good video and information Elvis, I have 14 powder colors all Eastwood. I find the Ford light and dark blue, dark green and maroon are the easiest to work with. The others especially the translucent colors all require 2 coats to get the look I want. I have Eastwoods Single Stage Reflective Chrome on the way so I am wondering how it's going to be to work with. I do have some colors that I probably won't be buying again but that's how I find out what I am going to like is by just trying them. I use the shake and bake method and it works well for me. I do size all my bullets with the Lee sizer kit, inexpensive and works great. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos!

    Great video Elvis. I have candy purple from the powder coat store. It’s a transparent or top coat powder coat. My instructions says it works best with a silver base coat. Because raw lead is very similar to silver color, I powder coat them as cast. I have similar results as you. But projectiles are very well coated but appears thin. I’ve played around and have double coated them but the high gloss goes away as a result. I’m sure you know but I’ll say it anyway...when I get powders that don’t coat as well as I hope...I use that powder as a mixer. Thanks for sharing. Great series.

    Good Elvis, very good, your experiments have given some good bullets, here in Italy I really don't know what powder to buy to get your results.
    Have you seen my videos on the copper covering of bullets?
    I have now tried to cover some 9 mm bullets with black powder, let's see how they come!

    I’d like to try powder coating bullets. Can I use regular bullet molds or do they have to be tumble lube bullet loads? Thank you for your assistance!

    Started off with HF powders. Than I ended up with Eastwood and no complaints from those.
    I watch Full Lead Taco and he swears by a co. called: Powder By The Pond , have you heard of them ?

    Hey Elvis now that we are powder coating why can't we use other soft metal like aluminum. What do you think

    • @elvisammo
      @elvisammo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aluminum is definitely not so soft. For barrels anyway....

    Good Afternoon Sir I watched one of your videos and I noticed you use a PID temperature controller. I am looking at getting one. Can you tell me where in the the LEE melting pot you put the temperature probe? I am guessing it is between the inside pot and the outer shell but where is it in regards to the heating element? And what is the temperature max for the probe you used?

    Dear Mr. Ammo:
    Last night the Columbia website showed the chrome as discontinued... Today however... They show chrome as available with a note that says "Formulation Change - 9/29/20"
    And they call it "Chrome TGIC"
    Soo... maybe this is good news... but I guess it has to be tested again 🤷‍♂️ The Eastwood and Prismatic chrome options look interesting but wow they are far more expensive!

    So the powder coat doesn’t stick in the barrel? You would think it would coat the barrel pretty bad. I’m just getting into casting my own bullets. And taking any good advice I can get.

    I have been watching your videos for a couple of years now and i greatly appreciate your powder coat ones. But I have a question. On your notebook you have Ford Light Blue at 400 degrees for 20 min. I seen your video with you doing the 4140 method. Did you go back to doing 400 at 20 min or are you still using the 4140 method?
