Trouble is this imported engine was like nothing an Aussie car had before and it was such a leap that when the VN came out with it's powerful but very very crude pushrod American V6, sales reps reportedly begged for their VLs back.
@@jamesfrench7299 The VN was engineered for the RB30 but it all fell through at the last minute. I like the Buick V6. They go forever, has massive torque and they weigh next to nothing. Also very low cost.

The reason they changed from the 'long in the tooth' holden straight six 3.3L, was because this is the era when unleaded fuel was being introduced, and with the new emissions laws based around the Aussie Auto production industry,it was easier to use the RB 30 & 20 engines because apparently it was getting hard to engineer & develop a new unleaded version of the old inline 3.3Litre.It was an interesting era.It was the first year model for Ford Australia to stop production of the V8 Falcon which would finally return again in the 1992 Falcon,Fairlane etc.

@@RossReviewsau My old man drove an FG G6E for awhile the engine was strong imagining that with some boost would be a hell of a ride. Cool seeing Perth streets in the background of your reviews.
The VL turbo ended up with the RB30 engine because the old Australian-designed straight-6 could not be brought up to modern emissions requirements of the 1980s. Holden, as a band-aid on the problem, contracted with Nissan for the RB engine. They needed a base engine capable of running unleaded fuel.
The Nissan engine in the VL was for a variety of reasons, the Holden red engine from the EH to VK (was based the Chevy11/Nova in-line six of 194 ci) was produced in Australia for Holden sedans & Toranas in 138,149,161,173,179,186 & 202 cubic inches was a late 1950’s US all cast iron pushrod design, Holden tried to make it comply to ongoing Australian design rules (ADR’s) with electronic ignition, carburation & fuel injection on the last the “ black” VK engines to try to make it comply but the old Holden six just could not meet the emission laws and fuel economy targets of the day without a radical redesign but GM-H realised the quickest and easiest way was to just buy the RB30 from Nisssan, as a matter of fact the Nissan six was also originally planned to be used in the VN commodore but GM in the US had the 3.8 Buick V6 then available but GM-H did a lightning quick reconfiguration on it so it could be used as a front engine rear wheel drive unit as was the commodore and that is why if you lift the Hood of an original 88-89 VN you will notice that it has a long metal top water inlet to the rear of the engine that was because it was used east west to drive the front wheels of the US cars, sorry to ramble on but just some facts on our Australian auto history, as to your 1 to10 best Aussie cars that will always be bloody hard because it does have a lot to do with personal opinions and always will but l will say your choices are sound and it probably has a lot to do with the age of us as it really depends on what we grew up with, for me l would have to include the first GT Falcon the XR with the high performance 289 Windsor with that magnificent Hurst shifter and the XW GTHO’s with the 351 Windsor in the phase 1 and Cleveland in the phase 2 also that 300 BHP you mentioned in the XY GTHO Was a 351 Cleveland that actually was putting out around 380 BHP from the factory the standard XY GT gave the 300 BHP but Ford Australia gave the HO the same power figures it was said to save the exorbitant insurance costs of the day.
I really love my Fords but I still strongly agree that the HSV GTSR W1 should be crowned as the winner. Just because there isn't anything near as exotic or epic as a W1.
Good to see the VF form... i was concerned,,, Represent the VF here,, Great list,,, and i pretty much agree mate the 10 on the List.. The mighty Barras and the Mighty W1 And here we are in 2020 with nothing....I was surprised the monaro Hsv coupe wasnt on there.. The GTO or GTS.. but was a Top 10.. only so much room LOL
Right on glad you enjoyed the vid and agreed with the list :) i would have liked to put more but only 10! its so difficult haha had to be the W1 for top spot.. but very tough for me to admit that lol love a barra so much
Great line up although I wouldn't have added the VS GTSR I would replace that with GTO Monaro coupe 5.7l absolutely love the look and decent performance. Keep up the good work.
If memory serves me, the RB30 in all VL Commodores was to do with emissions standards back in the mid eighties. The old school Holden 3.3 litre (or 202) couldn't be made clean enough for the new emission standards of the day. Therefore Holden was doing some model sharing with another manufacturer at the time being Nissan for engines and transmissions (partially owing to the Button plan to the mid 80's too). I had the good fortune to work at the time in the Federal Governments fleet back in the day and from memory the VL turbo was damn near bullet proof. Never had an engine failure that I can recall, maybe the odd diff blowup, but that was it. Being a Fordy I would have put the Phase 3 or the F6 310 at the top but sadly now none are made here anymore thanks to the big two treating OZ poorly (in my view). All cars that you placed in your top 10 are now becoming aspirational OZ automotive hardware and will be soon outrageously expensive in a few years. To all, if your lucky enough to own one, hang on and cherish it as it is now a bonafide or in the near future will be a collectible.
cheers for that info! crazy how that all played out eh.. n couldn't agree with you more man.. cherish what you got! still cant believe i got a BF F6 in the garage lol
@@RossReviewsau Nice car. I used to have a BF XR6 Turbo, a great car but sadly attracted Kangaroo's old blokes who weren't keen on using their eyes at "T" junctions (as much as EGO is a cool shade, people and animals tend not to see it). Replaced it with a XGII XR6 N/A Limited addition (in Lightning Strike). Added a couple of minor mods being cold air intake and a 2.5" cat back exhaust, while it goes pretty hard I miss the grunty goodness of the Barra Turbo.
Absolutely love the list, I think you should check out a Ralliart Magna though, would be very interested to get your thoughts on how they stack up against an NA barra......I may be biased but the Ralliart magna (must be manual) is the best Aussie car I have owned for the $$$.....

Just popped up late reply great list the xy was s gtHo. When I was a kid my friends neighbor owned one phase 3 and we were lucky enough to get a couple of rides in it (in Nz) it was doing just on 15 sec quater times with balanced motor and 4 speed manual no traction off the line back in 1978
Had to upgrade the VK 3.3 black engines re fuel regs and the Buick v6 didn’t fit because it was two high in the engine bay the prototypes had a bonnet bulge, and as they had a joint venture with Nissan with the LB/LC Astra they could import the engines through their joint venture and as it was the same dimensions as the 3.3ltr and only had to do engine mounts and manifolds.
I don't think it could've taken on a ferrari lol a bit hyperbolic.. But for a 4 door sedan it was the best in the world at the time.. Alan Mophett was also a canadian I believe..

Running on empty clip 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
A worthy list too
Had too! haah
no phase 4 xa gtho :(
Not a real car only a half dozen or so were made and not official model (would of been great if it was a full model tho)
My top pick is between the F6 Typhoon R-Spec, or the FGX XR8
2 epic cars right there! i really wanted the Sprint 8 but gave it to the GT-F
The Nissan engine in the VL was for a variety of reasons, the Holden red engine from the EH to VK (was based the Chevy11/Nova in-line six of 194 ci) was produced in Australia for Holden sedans & Toranas in 138,149,161,173,179,186 & 202 cubic inches was a late 1950’s US all cast iron pushrod design, Holden tried to make it comply to ongoing Australian design rules (ADR’s) with electronic ignition, carburation & fuel injection on the last the “ black” VK engines to try to make it comply but the old Holden six just could not meet the emission laws and fuel economy targets of the day without a radical redesign but GM-H realised the quickest and easiest way was to just buy the RB30 from Nisssan, as a matter of fact the Nissan six was also originally planned to be used in the VN commodore but GM in the US had the 3.8 Buick V6 then available but GM-H did a lightning quick reconfiguration on it so it could be used as a front engine rear wheel drive unit as was the commodore and that is why if you lift the Hood of an original 88-89 VN you will notice that it has a long metal top water inlet to the rear of the engine that was because it was used east west to drive the front wheels of the US cars, sorry to ramble on but just some facts on our Australian auto history, as to your 1 to10 best Aussie cars that will always be bloody hard because it does have a lot to do with personal opinions and always will but l will say your choices are sound and it probably has a lot to do with the age of us as it really depends on what we grew up with, for me l would have to include the first GT Falcon the XR with the high performance 289 Windsor with that magnificent Hurst shifter and the XW GTHO’s with the 351 Windsor in the phase 1 and Cleveland in the phase 2 also that 300 BHP you mentioned in the XY GTHO Was a 351 Cleveland that actually was putting out around 380 BHP from the factory the standard XY GT gave the 300 BHP but Ford Australia gave the HO the same power figures it was said to save the exorbitant insurance costs of the day.
thanks for the info :) amazing how that all happened
I really love my Fords but I still strongly agree that the HSV GTSR W1 should be crowned as the winner. Just because there isn't anything near as exotic or epic as a W1.
has to be number 1
Got my rossreviews sticker today cheers mate🤙
Nice one! thanks man! :)
Right on glad you enjoyed the vid and agreed with the list :) i would have liked to put more but only 10! its so difficult haha had to be the W1 for top spot.. but very tough for me to admit that lol love a barra so much
Great review mate
Glad you liked it! cheers!
Cool list ross 🤙I would throw the XC Cobra 302 in my list
def number 11 :P
Where is the Brock Group A VK SS? You can make eggs and bacon in these while going sideways they handle so well.
Ooh, I was gunna tick you off if you didn't include an XY, but you did: well done Jon. Good job for a youngster!
had to include the XY
@@RossReviewsau ..... I was impressed.
Great line up although I wouldn't have added the VS GTSR I would replace that with GTO Monaro coupe 5.7l absolutely love the look and decent performance. Keep up the good work.
Fair enough! if i was to remove one it would prob have been that or the Group A SS.. glad you enjoyed the list :)
I want to add the valiant charger and pacer but don't want take any out either .
its very hard to only pick 10 eh!
Great top 10 Ross, if you could of squeezed another two in, it would have to be the Ford XB GT Coupe and Holden HQ GTS Monaro...... sexiest cars ever!
glad you enjoyed it m8! them 2 would fit in nicely also :)
the main reason for the vl having an rb30 is because of the petrol crisis, love the vid btw
thanks for sharing man! glad you enjoyed the vid
What a great video! Top 10 Aussie cars. 😍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great top ten Ross. The only car I would add is the Last V8 Interceptor from Mad Max!
#11 :p
Man, I haven't even started the vid and I know this is gonna be fuckin' good
I was not disappointed
haha! glad you enjoyed it m8
Yep. Totally agree with the F6 310 Ross!! I can't wait to get mine but waiting for the Covid restrictions to end and the right car👍
Right on! you will love it bro.. amazing car
My neighbor had the vs gtsr, that thing looks so aggressive. He resprayed it to white tho which also looks very clean
thats epic! wow lucky
Also a valiant charger or any of the monaros. U might even like the 4wd magnas
Absolutely love the list, I think you should check out a Ralliart Magna though, would be very interested to get your thoughts on how they stack up against an NA barra......I may be biased but the Ralliart magna (must be manual) is the best Aussie car I have owned for the $$$.....
Great suggestion! i would love to review one.. very hard to find!
GM Germany engineers finally got it right , it was break threw tech. the air to fuel mix was mapped and fuel injection was born. so was born the VL with a the first import engine. .. Australia was so lucky to get these high powered engines , where the most of the world missed out ..
Australia lucked out BIG TIME with cars!!!!! so many killer cars that are only sold here
Johnny mate very impressive, for someone who didn't grow up with these cars that's a great list,of course there's shitloads more but for a top 10 nice, you're becoming more Aussie every vid mate hahaha I love it,ok you all stay safe buddy.
thanks Pete! was a bit of fun.. very hard actually to only pick 10! haha
Good list. No 1 for me is the VY GTO HSV COUPE!! Epic cars!! ( I'm a bit baiesd cause I own 1)
Thanks for sharing! they are epic! lets call them #11 HAHA very tough to only pick 10
GTHO Ross.
Theres so many great Aussie cars made over the decades that most ppl in the world have never heard of or seen from Ford, Holden & Chrysler. Falcons, Commodores, Monaro's Torana's, Chargers etc.👍
so many great cars eh!
Just popped up late reply great list the xy was s gtHo. When I was a kid my friends neighbor owned one phase 3 and we were lucky enough to get a couple of rides in it (in Nz) it was doing just on 15 sec quater times with balanced motor and 4 speed manual no traction off the line back in 1978
back in the day that car was INSANE!!! still have yet to drive one but lets hope one day i can give you all a proper review in one soon
List is good. Could have added the TRD aurion or rally art 380. Last hurahh for Aussie Japanese cars
true i've heard about them.. lets hope i can review one soon haha
Holden was tooling up for the ecotec 3.6L when the VL was released. So they had to use a different engine
im so glad they did haha
My grandad has a vz clubby. He's bumping 360 kw and man it goes !
god i love them so much! still surprised i haven't been able to review one!! Holden owners where are you!
@@RossReviewsau yeah wish I lived in Australia. He Maybe could've let you borrow his for a video!
1. E49 charger or 770 e37
2. Xc cobra
3. Xe Esp
4. Hq Gts coupe or sedan
5. Au ts50
6. Fg f6 310
7. Torana SLR5000
8. Vl turbo
9. Fg gtf
10. Series 1 forte wagon, 9 seater column shift with a missing hubcap
i dig it man!
One cannot go past a Holden LX Torana A9X Hatchback
@2:08 the last GTSR sold at auction for $305,000 this year .
thats crazy!
Man Australia made some MINT cars! 😍
they sure did! n this is only 10 of them lol
@@RossReviewsau i know right haha if you were in Melbourne it would have been cool for you to review my cars haha need more holden reviews!
As a West Australian I agree with most of your list but what about the Torana and the Monaros
top 10 is to not big enough haha.. its really difficult..i wanted to put a torana in but just not enough space
I have to agree with number 5 the VZ Clubbie is the best looking car ever built here for mine and I drive an FG Turbo
man the VZ clubbie is just one of them love at first sight cars eh lol want one
Cool list Nice work👌
Glad you enjoyed!
I used to see the VL turbo race on the streets of the gold coast back in the day
What a time to be alive
My top 10 would be just ford lol but I appreciate your opinion
🤣 thinking about doing a top 10 for each
your accent is a mix of south african, american, canadian and australian. kinda fresh
haha South African too, i have worked with quite a few lol my accent sure is a mixed bag now
@@RossReviewsau certainly a very unique accent man
Those W1's absolutely the best, have you tested the "holy grail" modified fg?
Unfortunately not yet! but i do know someone with a Holygrail.. im waiting to travel & review it
What… no torana ! Now that’s a big miss young man
Was my top 10 n there are just to many amazing cars to fit them all
Sickest channel brah
thanks man!
Good work mate. Vz clubby for me, BTW the phase 3 was a gt ho
love a VZ eh! yes was kicking myself i missed that haha
The XR8 sprint usually has around about 400kw due to over boost. The baseline lowest figure for the XR8 sprint is the 340 something kilowat
they do get overboost :)
A compilation of VZ Clubby burnouts would be nice : P
that would be sick eh :p
Good list but you can't forget the xa xb xc ford Coupe, and ofcourse the hk Monaro and xu gtr Torana
Good top 10 mate
glad you enjoyed it
#3, man thats a nice shade of green
💵
I don't think it could've taken on a ferrari lol a bit hyperbolic.. But for a 4 door sedan it was the best in the world at the time.. Alan Mophett was also a canadian I believe..
i didnt know he was canadian haha very cool.. ya for a 4 door sedan it would have been unbelievable
it's not the GTO thats a pontiac its a GTHO and it has cracked the millions $ barrier if you want to buy one thats IF you can find one
yes i messed up the H haha sorry.. far out 1 million now!!!
@@RossReviewsau it cracked a million like 15 years ago lol but maby you were talking about 600k American haha
