I always thought of a Rush as having lots of pairs but never quite a trio... Fly By Night and Caress of Steel - a pair, A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres, definitely a pair, then Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures - a pair, then Roll the Bones and Presto - a pair as well. 2112 and Signals are for me transitional albums. 2112 could make a trio with FBN and CoS, as well as with AFtK and Hemispheres. Signals could make a trio with Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, but also with Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows.

Blue Öyster Cult - (Blue Öyster Cult - Tyranny and Mutation - Secret Treaties)
The Beatles - (Revolver, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour)
While they all sound a bit different, I think those albums encapsulate their psychedelic period. They have some whimsical and experimental songs on other albums as well but there are through lines on those 3 in particular.

The only band I've ever consciously thought this exact thing about is Judas Priest. Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin after Sin, and Stained Class. i even call it the "S Trilogy". It represents their best stuff, for me. Different drummer on each of the album, but still, it's the perfect mix of heaviness and emotion, and I can listen to them back to back and feel like I've gone on this fantastic journey.

I feel Brian Eno's debut triptych of Here Come the Warm Jets, Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy), and Another Green World form a type of spiritual trilogy or at least they do for me. The story of Eno's transition from eccentric Roxy Music pop star to ambient/avant-garde pioneer.
They are separated by many years, but Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, The Ghost of Tom Joad, and Devils & Dust could be sold as a trilogy in a box set.
Blur's Modern Life Is Rubbish, Parklife, The Great Escape fit together beautifully as a type of ultimate Britpop trilogy, with Damon Albarn's songwriting at its most hyper-English and observational.

The three early 80s King Crimson are the obvious 3. Rush's Signals through Power Windows have a shared sound. Bob Dylan has two trios that I'm aware of: the three Christian albums beginning with Slow Train Coming and his 3 self-produced albums as Jack Frost: Love and Theft, Modern Times & Together Through Life. Glass Hammer have 3 with Jon Davison: If, Cor Cordium & Perilous; and of course their most recent Skallagrim Trilogy. I always link together Alice Cooper's Flush the Fashion through Special Forces.

I’ve always seen the debut as standalone.
I group Paranoid, Master of Reality and Vol 4 together as the heavy doomy stoner proto metal trio of albums.
Then I put Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage and Technical Ecstasy together as the 3 where Sabbath start bringing in keyboards and more general 70s rock sounds.
I know people put Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die together as a pair too. But for a trio of albums, I would put TE with the previous two.

The Beatle's acid trio. Rock genius's mountain top; *Revolver, Sgt Peppers and Magical Mystery Tour.* Before they were growing afterwards the slow decline and I say that even though 'The White Album' is one of my favorites; it is their first in a while ('Beatles for Sale' was their last with a little filler) with some little 'filler' while their last two had IMHO quite a lot of filler, even if it is quality filler, the explosive evolution had ended and other artists took the lead musically; Hendrix, the Doors, Frank Zappa, Woodstock, the Grateful Dead, Santana, Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones peak era, etc etc.

    • @b.g.5869

"Magical Mystery Tour" isn't really an album per se. In the UK it was released as two EPs, and in the US it contained the soundtrack from the TV special of the same name as well as singles previously released during the Sgt Pepper sessions.
Also, "Abbey Road' is considered their best album by many.
I think there are a lot of good songs on "Let It Be" but it is overall a drop in quality from what they'd done previously. Virtually all of it was actually recorded before "Abbey Road" though they were essentially coming up with all of the songs that appear on the last 2 albums at the same time.
Abbey Road happened to get the better material in my opinion but it's interesting that the fact that "Abbey Road" was released before "Let It Be"that it creates the false impression of a band starting to lose its mojo a bit.
I love The White Album but yeah, definitely a lot of filler. Many have argued it would have been a more solid album if released as a single album instead of a double album with only the strongest tracks; they could have released the others as singles.

This doesn't necessarily mean it can't be considered part of a trio of course.

They all capture that early folk / rock / prog feel of mid period early Strawbs, with Rick Wakeman, Richard Hudson and John Ford coming on board. Wakeman was replaced by Blue Weaver for GNW but the feeling continued. Dave Lambert came onboard for Bursting at the Seams and there was a partly more mainstream feel to some of the music, although there was still a strong element of prog. "Restless and Wild" is pure heavy metal, very raw and dirty, but starting with "Balls" they softened their sound moving towards a more commercial and accessible music, this record doesn't sound nearly as heavy and gritty as "Restless" did. That said I think the perfect trilogy from Accept would be "Balls to the Wall", "Metal Heart" and "Russian Roulette".
