- VN24 - Dec 11, 2021 - Unna / Germany - A 50-year-old motorist was very seriously injured in a traffic accident on the A44 freeway Saturday morning. Apparently, he had been traveling as a "ghost driver" in the wrong direction. According to initial investigations, the man had initially driven onto the Dortmund lane, westbound, of the B1 federal highway in the opposite direction, eastbound, for unknown reasons. Between the Dortmund-Aplerbeck and Holzwickede junctions, the driver was - according to witnesses - still traveling in the wrong direction. He also drove through the Dortmund/Unna interchange in the wrong direction and reached the A44 freeway. Shortly thereafter, between the Dortmund/Unna and Unna-Ost intersections (B233) at around 7:00 a.m., he then crashed head-on into a semitrailer truck that was traveling westbound in the middle lane. The truck was deflected to the right and pushed the Audi about 100 meters in front of it, into the right guard rails. The driver did not survive the head-on collision in his car. Rescue workers attended to the 29-year-old driver of the semitrailer from Poland into which the car crashed. The driver was uninjured. The police are investigating the exact reasons for the wrong way. Due to the extensive accident investigation on the A44, there was a full closure of the Dortmund lane in the meantime.

Wahnsinn was die Hilfskräfte so alles sehen, verarbeiten und wegstecken müssen. Auch hier wieder ein riesen Dank an alle die diese Jobs machen.
ich kenne den einen oder anderen fahrer und sogar den fahrer der firma der dieses wrack geborgen hat. ich sprach zufällig mit ihm darüber und habe erst durch solche videos begriffen das dies kein einfacher job ist und in der brutalität dem der hilfskräfte und polizeibeamten nichts nachsteht. ich hab mich bei ihm für das was er leistet bedankt und einen kaffee spendiert.
Ja das ist wohl wahr, aber glaub mir, es gibt immer noch'ne "Steigerung"
Komme aus Unna und bin an diesem Tag daran vorbei gefahren.Rettungskräfte waren schon vor Ort.Es war ein Trümmerfeld.Er ist vorher schon auf der B1 in falscher Richtung gefahren und dann in Holzwickede auf die A44 in falscher Richtung aufgefahren Bin froh das es dem LKW Fahrer Körperlich gut geht und das es keinen anderen erwischt hat.
Danke an die Feuerwehr, Polizei und Notärzte und Helfer. Ihr seid einfach spitze!
Das ist furchtbar, wer den Freitod wählt sollte es woanders machen wo niemand anders zuschaden kommt, der LKW Fahrer tut mir am meisten Leid und braucht lange um das zu verarbeiten, wünsche ihm alles Gute und dem anderen Ruhe in Frieden🙏

Retired, 29 years service to my community. I have been to many tragic accidents similar to this one. Prayers to the family of the deceased and thanks to the fire fighters who did their best to extricate the driver.

7am seems like a pretty odd time to be driving drunk, if he was. Description says he was driving the wrong way for quite awhile on different interchanges. You'd think he'd have realized at one point that he was facing traffic head on.
May he rip and hopefully the truck driver is recovering mentally and emotionally from this. His truck may have saved the lives of other innocent drivers on the road that morning.

Ich fahre seit 1988 Auto und das 5x in der Woche, ich begreife nicht, wie man es schafft verkehrt auf die Autobahn zu fahren. Unglaublich.
Es passiert selbst Berufskraftfahrern. Zum Beispiel in der Nacht an Baustellen, da gelangt man schnell in die falsche Spur und falsche Richtung ! Man sollte niemals nie sagen !
Und zum Glück ist er selbst tot für seine Dummheit und nimmt nicht wie so oft eine Familie mit in den Tod!

Man sieht es doch am Schaden, dass hier keiner versehentlich auf der falschen Spur war und langsam zur nächsten Ausfahrt wollte. Hier sollte ganz offensichtlich ein Schlussstrich gezogen werden.

Ob tragischer Unfall oder Suizid, werden erst weitere Ermittlungen der Polizei klären können. Es ist aber beides sehr schlimm.

Der Fahrer des Audis hat vermutlich auch eine Familie und Freunde und die sollen hier nicht lesen müssen wie abfällig sich hier freme Leute zu dem Unfall äußern.

Mein täglicher Arbeitsweg… ich kann nicht verstehen wie man an diese Stelle ausversehen gelangen kann. 1,5 km dem Berufsverkehr entgegen an einer so belebten Stelle.
Total unverständlich. Bin nur froh das ich wohl ein paar Minuten nach dem Crash am Stauende stand und abgefahren konnte und nicht in so einen Unfall verwickelt wurde.
Höchstwahrscheinlich Suizid. Auf einer der ekelhaftesten Arten.

The car went straight under the cab protecting the driver and passenger. Many people may not like trucks but when you have a torpedo coming towards you in the name of a speeding car I'm glad to be in one.

Auch wenn er dafür eigentlich nichts konnte, wird er auch nicht vergessen, das da ein Mensch gestorben ist und sich möglicherweise sogar Vorwürfe machen "Hätte ich den früher sehen können ?" " Hätte ich ausweichen können ? " " Hätte ich noch so weit runterbremsen können , dass es nicht tödlich verlaufen wäre ?"
Diese Fragen werden ihm durch den Kopf gehen, auch wenn ihn absolut keine Schuld trifft. Zudem wird ihm der Schock tief in den Knochen sitzen . Wer da an Erholung und Schlaf denken kann, nachdem er in so einen Unfall verwickelt war, ist völlig gefühlskalt. Aber so gefühlskalt kann niemand sein, dass ihm sowas am A... vorbei geht, wenn er da selber drin verwickelt ist.

No, the audi driver just tested his car
52 years ago driving a semi tractor trailer down US Hwy 61 , along the Mississippi River. A car in my south bound lane, (4 lane highway going wrong way) coming straight at me. Changed lanes (moved over) he followed, applied brakes at 65mph. Car went under the front end of my truck. It was determined that for financial reasons and lose of income this person decided death by truck. It happens more than people realize. I have never been the same about driving and recently retired with over 4 million miles traveled. But that was the most traumatic time of my life. I can imagine what is and always will be on that drivers mind. What could he have done to avoid this. I suffered a broken femur braking as hard as I could to reduce speed before impact.
There's No way in Heaven someone could survive that over 100 MPH head on collision..
Horribly traumatic experience for the poor Polish truck driver but what an amazing clear-up job by the German team. Sad that a suicide felt it necessary to involve others.

Amazing how the hazard flashing was still operational on that car! Guess the battery and probably control circuitry too is mounted to the rear of the vehicle.
Thats German quality - evenif its a total wreck, the hazard lights still work. :)
My heart goes out to the young polish truck driver he has to live with the fact that someone died and this could end his driving career but he still needs to be very strong, I had something similar happen to me at this time of year and by God it's not good for the truck driver My family went through hell with me and it scared me for the rest of my life with ((p,t,s,d)), post tormatick stress disorder, but saying that my heart also goes out to the 50 yo's family and frinds he's left behind they will be in so much stress also, why do people do this at Christmas??

I really hate to have to comment on it, but that bloke turning the fire truck around really does need to look to his game. Anybody who really knows how to drive knows that it where you start the manoeuvre from that matters. There was no chance in hell of him turning the vehicle cleanly from where he began started. A couple of quick shunts and the whole job would have been executed quickly and cleanly. Oh and why the wrong way driving? Too many incompetent people are issued with driving licences!
Probably a medical issue. Or alchohol or drugs. Maybe he was from a country that drives on the left, made a sad mistake and then just freaked out. I've spent 30yrs driving heavy vehicles, 21 of those on Fuel Tankers. I've lost count of the amount of people I've seen driving on the wrong side of the Motorway. As for your other comment, Firefighters are not Truck Drivers, they merely use them as a tool to get a job done. As long as the Driver gets to an emergency quickly, and safely, I'm sure they really doesn't care how they looks doing a 3 point turn.
Terrific job of work by the clean-up company. Very professional and each man knew his part, which made this horrific accident seemingly vanish!

As a truck driver I’ve had this before where a car was heading towards me on the wrong side of the motorway. Luckily I avoided it by swerving onto the hard shoulder. Brown trouser time I can tell you! Also two mechanics where I work out road testing a truck had a suicide driver drive head on into them, driver was instantly killed, truck was written off, and it took months for the two mechanics to get over it if indeed they really have? ☹️

Diesel-air mix needs to be compressed in order to burn. Just like you can pull a hot dip-stick to check engine oil without it exploding in your face etc.

How do you manage to not only drive the wrong way on the road, but drive through interchange’s too. Must have been a bit scary for the Polish truck driver.
We, the viewers, will never know but the amount of damage indicates a high impact speed which, in turn suggests that it may not have been an accident in the pure meaning of that word. Sympathies for the truck driver, and condolences to the family of the deceased.

One thing I did notice after they removed the propshaft from the truck they had a rack for it to stand in on the back of the recovery truck I've never seen that before I expect it was one of the operator's that come up with the idea.
I too was well impressed with that storage rack. Wish they'd had them when I was doing vehicle recovery! OTOH, in GB they usually just pull a half-shaft, which is the lazy way.
The cleanup crew and the first responders very professional on top of this amazing recovery equipment this is German exelens
Die A2 ist immer wieder ein Unfall Brennpunkt. Ich bin froh das ich die nicht mehr fahren muss mit dem LKW. Ich habe oft genug im Stau gestanden.
Noch schlimmer die A4 die halb Osteuropa bedient !
Bin daher gefahren zur Arbeit nach Dortmund sah schrecklich aus. Mein Beileid…
ich kann auch noch zu solchen vorfällen sagen . das gefühl das dir da grade auf der autobahn jemand entgegen kommt ist schauerlich . in einer ähnlichen situation auf der a445/46 hamm>>> brilon ist mir seiner zeit etwas ähnliches passiert . ich konnte den fahrer noch grade daran hindern aufzufahren . fragt mich heute nicht mehr wie aber es ging ohne crash ab und der fahrer war dankbar als er sich dessen bewusst wurde das er grade auf ne autobahn falsch auffahren wollte . das vergisst man auch nicht.

I once had someone drive the wrong way at me on a Dual Carriageway, it's the most terrifying experience, they even flashed the lights like I was in the wrong. What people don't realise is the closing speed of around 140 mph means everything happens very quickly and you really have no choice but to try and avoid them and at that you need to leave it quite late hoping they don't do the same and swerve into the lane you've had to swerve into to avoid them. I keep my dashcam footage of me avoiding a crash by millimetres and the other idiot merrily continuing on their way in the wrong direction on the carriageway not even realising how close they came to turning both of us to jam. Anyone caught doing this should never be allowed to drive again and should be locked up for years!
