Rush is the type of band that you can listen to the isolated instrument tracks all by themselves and be awestruck by the virtuosic musicianship, but then you it all together and it's like finding God! The Permanent Waves album got me into Rush. Every song on the album is awesome. Same goes for the albums Moving Pictures and Signals. And the live album Exit Stage Left was an almost permanent resident in my Sony Walkman when I was in Junior High. Neil did indeed write incredible lyrics. I was a teenager in the 1970's, bands like this were coming up while disco was getting popular, it was an amazing time to be musically coming of age. Carpenters and Kiss and AC/DC and Buddy Rich and the B-52s and the Eagles and Boston and Yes and ELP and Chuck Mangione and Queen and Three Dog Night and and and, all following the 1960s. Today's young have NO idea what it was like. In 1966 Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass had FOUR albums in the Billboard Top Ten album chart AT THE SAME TIME! A record still unbeaten!! In the '70s the Jackson 5 and The Carpenters and the Osmpnds were selling out arenas while ELP and Kansas and RUSH were recording historically significant albums. I've been lucky enough to see Count Basie, Rush, Yes, Chicago, the Jackson 5, a few others, LIVE. I consider myself to be VERY lucky, even though I'm very cognizant of what I've missed.
Keep reacting. Keep the music alive. There was a musical EXPLOSION in the 1960s that bore incredible fruit in the 1970s. Every time somebody young has their eyes opened to what they've missed, the world becomes a better place. To everybody who has had their world expanded by these videos, PLEASE share this experience with your friends and especially to your younger family members. Expand to jazz and classical and every other style you can find.

I believe that "Kindness that can Kill" refers to either the belief of a vengeful/wrathful God or man's history of using religion as an excuse for violence. The jam in the middle is definitely one of a kind. The root of it is Alex playing both Lead and Rhythm setting himself up to go off by trading back and forth between the two. I also always love when Rush breaks down the instrumental by showing you what Neil and Geddy are laying down before Alex comes in so you don't lose sight of how awesome it is...

  • @HowFingCool
    @HowFingCool 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I don't know if anyone else chimed in about this, but the lyric, "kindness that can kill" is a sly reference to the the strategy of "kill them with kindness" which means to win over your adversaries by being overly kind towards them, to make them feel guilty, which Neil and others obviously take as borderline manipulation. So Neil is not only saying he takes freewill for himself, but that's what he insists on giving to others, which is a fairly noble attitude in the end

I can’t imagine that there has been another group we’re every guy in the band was so extraordinary on their instrument. Alex, Geddy and Neil are just such experts on their respective instrument, but to make it a bit more unbelievable, they all play Korte an just the one instrument they are experts at. Geddy plays the keys, sometimes with his hand and other times with his feet, all while singing.
Alex also plays Taurus pedals from time to time and as awesome as Neil s on drums, he also triggers keyboard samples, which is why they sound like an orchestra when playing live. I have seen them on every tour since Permanent Waves and they never once failed to impress. Every tour from Vapor Trails on, Rush dropped having an opening act and played for three hours with a short break for Neil and it still seemed too short, always leaving me wanting more. Rush was always the best concerts I ever went to. No other band was a perfect live as those three guys.
By the way, you ave a rat attitude concerning the victim stage mentality that everyone wants to claim today. You’re right, it is just someone’s excuse to not own up to what they have done or have failed to do. We can make our own fate, even if things seem stacked against us at time, that just makes your triumph that much better when you win.

Thank you. This one made me hit that SUBSCRIBE button. I had no free will. What I love about Alex's guitar work is how it fits with the theme of each song. On Spirit of the Radio it sounds like the shower of radio waves bringing the music down from the transmitter to my car antenna. On Red Barchetta you feel the power of the engine as you stomp the gas pedal through his riffs. And on this masterpiece his solo is a channel to the chaos of the universe we must somehow find our way through by choosing a path.
If there is a rock and roll heaven, then Chris Squire and Jimi Hendrix filled out the ultimate power trio. RIP Neil.

I never expect full understanding and appreciation of a Rush song on the first listen. There are rewards to revisiting.

That solo section literally blew my mind the first time I heard it; I am a musician (bassist) and I was convinced these guys were aliens after hearing it. Totally agree about Neil's lyrics; genius.

There is nothing I like better than seeing someone feeling a new Rush song for the first time the way I've felt it for so many years. Great reaction video!

The true measure of musical genius is doing what sounds impossible while making it seem effortless. RUSH did this for over 40 years both in the studio and on a live stage. We will never hear or see anything like this again.

You got the message! This is one of their best songs ever. It's (almost) commercial in appeal - but really expressive. Top of their game. Reminds me of my childhood. Thanks for enjoying.

Love this tune, Neil's lyrics are amazing. My pet peeve about the lyric video though, one crucial part is incorrect. The correct lyric is "kicked in the face, you CAN pray for a place in heaven's unearthly estate". Checked my original liner notes & it's CAN, not can't, which makes sense, since the whole song is about decisions you CAN make. Also, "kindness that can kill" I believe refers to people who kill in the name of religion. Alex's solo is a face melting work of genius, as is the rest of the song.

Jay Rah....I wanna give you your propers. I watch a lot of reaction videos because I grew in the 70's and 80's, and you are one of the few people that not only listen to the grove but dive into the lyrics. And the others who do listen to the words are usually very scant on what the say about it. Thank you for being more thorough.

You're becoming my go to RUSH guy. Funny, smart and a straight ahead interpreter if he world's number 1 band. I have listened to at least 1 RUSH song (picked randomly) everyday since 1978.

Jay Rah, happy to see you doing the Rush reactions - if you hadn't heard yet, Neil's nickname was "The Professor" and it was for far more than just how he beat the skins. The dude had a hard life - his first, and only daughter at the time, died in a car crash in 1997 at the age of 19; then 10 months later his (common law) wife of 23 years died of cancer. Dude got on his motorcycle and ghosted, drove 55,000 miles from Canada to Belize - wrote a book that's a good read, Ghost Rider. If you want to see them when they were at their best, imo, there's a whole live show recorded at The Palace, Auburn Hills, MI - Rush - Live From the Rabbit Hole (1990) The older stuff is some of the best, in 1982 some fans got pissed off when Signals came out because of all the synth and some people thought they were selling out a bit - but if there's one thing that Rush NEVER did, it was "sell out" - they just did their thing and did it better than most. They had a ridiculous run from '81 - '96 where they just pumped out albums that were all really good, on different levels. Then they were on a break because of everything going on with Neil and didn't know if they'd ever even get back together, thankfully, for all of us, they did. Tackle a couple from Grace Under Pressure in the near future - Between the Wheels has some bars.

As an older dude, I watch a lot of reaction videos to see how you younger cats react to what I grew up with. Some reactors are kinda lame and clearly doing it for the likes and subs, others, such as yourself, have an actual appreciation for music and "get it" . I appreciate the enthusiasm you show for "my' music....you have become one of my favorite reaction channels...keep it up!
