One of my favorite Rush songs! The lyrics are on another level on this one.
The part when Geddy hits the “Ooooooohhhhhhhh!” combined with the music crescendo, still gives me chills.

This song is almost 40 years old. Hard to believe, it could have been written today. Neil was a brilliant songwriter. He just had this way of looking at the world and seeing the wrongs and putting it down on paper that is eerily prescient. This is one of the deep cuts. It's well-loved by fans but rarely heard by casual listeners. What's amazing about some of these Rush songs is that you'd think that the lyrics were written for today, but they were written forty years ago. It's sad that the problems we talked about back then are STILL with us today.

As relevant today as it was in 1981, WH has a dark, mean growl, and is one of my favorites off Moving Pictures. An observation on the terrible power of self-righteous conviction. Intended to be a studio piece only, we were eventually lucky to hear it played live several times, including on the Grace Under Pressure Tour in 1984 and the Time Machine Tour in 2011. Alex plays some great outro leads live! Such a great song! Great breakdown, insight and reaction to this one-time "sleeper" song.

Keeping this comment apolitical...I saw Rush in St. Louis on their Snakes & Arrows tour. It had been stormy, windy and yet clear skies. One of the main things I remember about the whole (incredible) concert came from the first line in this song. "The night is black, without a moon, the air is thick and still." At that precise moment, the moon went behind a huge bank of clouds and the wind died down to nothing. It was like the band had arranged this moment in time with the weather gods...it was so cool it bordered on the surreal. Incredible band, amazing concert. One of the top three shows I've ever seen!

Great breakdown of the song, and especially the lyrics. As you know, Neil was a very cerebral lyricist, and in this song, he makes the connection between fear and ignorance in a way that doesn't seem preachy or forced. The sad thing is that while this was written 30 years ago, it still is spot on today.

"Witch Hunt" is the middle song on Side B, sandwiched between "The Camera Eye" and "Vital Signs." In the studio, their art director, Hugh Syme, plays some keyboards on the song. When I saw Rush live in 1981, this was the only song they couldn't play live. That changed in a, couple years with computer sampling when Geddy could trigger parts to fill in. It was first performed live during the Grace Under Pressure Tour, 1984.
With Rush, it's not always the most obvious interpretation of Neil's lyrics. Given the current political climate in the US, this does describe the culture of fear. Released in 1981, it was shortly after the Reagan administration began. He used fear to get elected, raise taxes and build up the military, including the nuclear arsenal (strategic and tactical weapons).
This is part III of the 'Fear' trilogy. Part II, "The Weapon" is on the next album, Signals (1982). Part I, "The Enemy Within" is on the album after that, Grace Under Pressure (1984). Kind of reverse chronological order, like the set list for their final tour, R40. Interestingly, there is a Part IV, "Freeze" that's on the album, Vapor Trails (2002).

Jay Rah - This song is not just about hunting 'witches'; it's about communal paranoia; it's about fear of 'the Other'; it's about people not being one of US; it could apply to any minority group today. And the album 'Moving Pictures' was released in 1980. What has changed?

  • @JeromeDukes
    @JeromeDukes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Awesome reaction to one of the best 4 part series ever created by a band. As mentioned the 4 song series of Fear was released in reverse chronicle order. Their next album Signals part 2 of Fear was "The Weapon". The album after that part 1 of Fear is "The Enemy Within". The last song part 4 or Fear "Freeze" was released quite a bit later in their album catalog. Which make me think, the song was not planned to be part of the series. May I suggest keeping the songs together in your reactions of Rush and like "Witch Hunt", you'll love the lyrics.
Over the years I've thought about prejudice and it's causality and the obvious reason is fear. It stems from exposure and tolerance. People who generally live in cities tend to have the exposure to tolerate issues to do with race and sexual orientation. The further you live outside the cities the exposure lessens and fear tends to creep in. The line "mad men fed on fear and lies", unfortunately still applies today.
Thx for the reaction to a Thinking Mans Band

I just want to echo how alive those lyrics are for our age today. "Quick to judge/Quick to anger/Slow to understand/Ignorance and prejudice/and fear go hand in hand." I am so sad that such a beautiful soul is not still with us. Thank God we still have his lyrics and music.

Neil and his words will always live, as long as we never forget them. Rush was a band ahead of their time.

Charlottsville, man. That's what this song is about. Even if it was written 35 years earlier.

Speaks to all ages and all times, excellent review! Your reviews are fair and inciteful. You seem to have a knowledge of effect pedals etc, do you play? Im in my mid 50’s and concerts have always been a huge thing for me. I saw rush in the final big tour, flawless, they didnt have a bunch of special effects but was the single best shoe, musically that I ever saw! They might not be everyones taste but nobody can take away the caliber of musicianship that they have. Muse would be another band that has a huge fanbase to start digging in to.

Great comments about painting a picture, Jay. It conjures up images of the 1700s to me even though they are talking about "now" issues.

Thanks SO much for doing this song! One of Rush's best, and lyrically a masterpiece. NOW- humor me here, change of topic- I haven't seen ANY reaction channels delving into the music genre of fingerstyle acoustic guitar- and there are amazing players to be seen and heard. And their playing must be seen! I strongly recommend a guy named Mike Dawes and a song called Boogie Shred to start. You watch this dude play and you'll be mesmerized. Trust me on this! :-)

Just 1 thing Jay, in live versions they played later on, Alex has a wonderful guitar solo at the end. Nothing like the end of this studio version where it is mainly Geddy's bass and the synths.
Check it out, definitely worth watching.

I don’t want to get into a political discussion, but one quick comment...anyone who listens to “Witch Hunt” and thinks “this is a perfect description of my enemy” is missing the key lesson of the song.
