      Plot twist: HBO is rebooting the series and will cover the entire story of this episode over the course of three seasons and will feature HBO’s signature full frontal nudity.

      Fun to watch, but a bit silly. At the end, for example, they just left the other officer's patrol car, and the suspect's car, sitting in the roadway as they drove off. Of course, there was no traffic on the roadways, so wasn't too much of a problem.

      +Helen Kruse Yes, he was a great character actor and was in many films as well.(Hank Patterson) Gunsmoke, Green Acres and Petticoat Junction were his biggest TV roles; however he played a great role in several Twilight Zone Episodes; my favorite being "Kick the Can" about a group of senior citizens in a small rest home who decide not to grow old and are transformed back into their youth except one who regrets it as the episode ends.

    • @helenkruse
      @helenkruse 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +sonoran rain I remember that Twilight Zone episode. I ran across a young man, who may be a teen I'm not sure on here who has discovered this show and all those we grew up on from way back. I gave him my email address. I also told him to look up Ma & Pa Kettle on here,and let me know what he thought. I think he has friends too who are discovering the old shows and movies. haha I love it. They loved what they've been seeing too. So much is being lost to a generation who don't care about anything except themselves,and their news is whatever Hollywood is putting out. Sad. I wonder if the USA will see a Tricentennial as we saw and celebrated the Bicentennial as a Nation. Anyway, back to the shows. Have fun too.

      @sonoranrain2330 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +Helen Kruse Yes, I truly pity the youth of today as they have been conditioned to believe that exploding cars, nudity and vile language is "entertainment". They don't realize what wholesome family based entertainment is. Most of the shows in the fifties had common themes of virtue, good vs. evil ( and good always won out and you were left with a good feeling after watching most shows during that era)I don't even own a TV anymore as there is a plethora of classics such as Highway Patrol, Sky King, Whirlybirds and many more on TH-cam. They are now in the public domain, so they are free of charge. The new"sitcoms" are nothing more than disposable trash that have no moral compass or redeeming value whatsoever. I was born in 1956, so I was too young to watch them when they first came out, but I soon discovered the reruns and have enjoyed them ever since. FYI, Dragnet, Donna Reed, Get Smart, Andy Griffith,Perry Mason and Bob Newhart are but a few of the box sets that you can buy at reasonable prices of all the seasons boxed together. God Bless

      sonoran rain I'm a little younger than you,born in 1962 but a Boomer just the same. I agree with you 100%. I love how the young ones today attack those of us who don't go along with their filth of today too. Maybe we were born in the wrong end of the century. haha I think we who are not afraid to say what you did,and feel like we do are supposed to be quiet and go away never to be seen from again. Today's youth think they know it all,but know nothing. You know, I actually read in the Bible that there will be those who will be self proclaimed wise men (and women) and who are no more wise than an elephant can fly. That is the jest of it. Now there are those who want to boycott a state because they have to put a new law out there concerning bath rooms so people like us and children can use a public rest room safely. I have not used one in years. I'm afraid to use one. The way I see it, when I am on the way home there are alot of woods between town and my place. I think I'd rather take my chances in the woods on the way home. Then boycott states who have to make new laws to protect churches, and businesses from being forced to partake in things that owner does not believe in. No one should be forced to do anything they don't want to do,and when it goes against their Religious belief, such as the baker who doesn't want to bake a cake for the gay wedding because it goes against his belief. Why should that baker be forced to make that cake? Is that one the only baker in town? Go to one who does not care. I noticed, evil ALWAYS wants to go where it isn't welcome even by force. I guess I will die with a bullet in my head one day. I will NEVER go against what is right no matter what or who says I must. I will answer to no man, but when I have to answer to my Father one day,I don';t want to have to explain away evil. You take care and keep watching and enjoying. Oh, I ran across a young man here who has discovered our shows. haha I love it. He loves these shows and I think he has some friends too that watch this and other old tv shows and movies. I told them to look up Ma & Pa Kettle, count the kids and tell me how many they count. haha I know, I did that one already years ago. haha I gave him my email and we wrote. It made me feel so good that here was a young man enjoying these shows as we do and have our whole lives. So many today are missing out and don't care and that is scary. Sorry this got long. Take care and I know we will cross paths again. Can't wait to hear with the young folks thought of the Kettle's haha

    • @sonoranrain2330
      @sonoranrain2330 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +Helen Kruse Your reply speaks volumes. We are becoming a police state where the individual has no rights and voicing one's opinion is considered "hate speech" as the baker you spoke of. Why didn't they just find another baker?No, instead, they want more than just tolerance, they want complete acceptance of a lifestyle that God expressly forbids. I will answer to no one,, but God the Father , His Son who paid our sin debt and the Holy Spirit. I will not take the mark of the beast, no matter what the circumstances. Christians will win even if it looks futile in the end as we are not going to die. We will be with the Lord in our new glorified bodies. How I await that day!! I would not trade all my years to be a child again, because the innocence of childhood is forever gone sadly. God Bless you and I've enjoyed our conversation. Kind Regards, Blake

    I remember watching all these shows. I don't remember when the Highway Patrol started.
    I just know I watched this show, Have Gun Will Travel among others. I remember when I was a youngster in the early 40's when TV was just starting. My uncle was one of the first 10,000 to buy a TV in L. A. It was a table model. The cabinet was around 3 ft wide and 2 ft high and about 1 1/2 ft deep with a screen 6 inches to 8 inches big. When my family would visit I would watch and was so captivated. When midnight came the stations ( there were 3 ) would sign off by playing the National Anthem and the rest of the night all you could see was what was called a test pattern. Later on, I lived in Sunnyvale and twice a week we would drive to San Jose ( 10 miles )to watch TV at my older brother's house. We watched
    Burn's and Allen' show and so on.
    Those were great day's. You didn't even need to lock your door's when you left home. I remember the worst thing at school was chewing gum in class or cutting in line. We actually learned History, Math, Wood Shop, Metal Shop, English, and I could go on.
    Now kid's don't know History or what is going on in the country less on the world. To busy texting crap mostly.
    Parents are so permissive the kids don't understand what real respect really means.
    I might be elderly but I would not trade places with kids now a days. Our freedoms have slipped away and most people don't know what true freedom is like. Every aspect of our lives are watched and now we have young college students owing thousands for a bad education and young stupid one's calling out to ban free speech, how dumb is that?
    How many lost their lives to keep free speech and these young students have been so pampered by their parents and society as a hole they ( students ) have no clue what they ask by doing this.
    I must stop writing and get out of here. I just hate to see what has happened to my country. Ever once in a while I get worked up and I wonder why my brother's ( 2 )fought WWII and I am a Korean vet. Why risk your lives for a generation like we have today. Most are dumber then a box of nails or a stump.

      +Ray Dodson Mr.Ray, I agree with your comment 100%. I will be 54 this year. I am 3rd generation from Lithuania. I know all about the sacrifices made for the freedoms we used to have. Yesterday I saw several younger folks with Bernie Sanders stickers on their cars. They also had stickers showing they have children. Do they realize this man is an open communist? So is obama. Those brave souls who fought,died and were made lame for the freedoms only to have them thrown in the gutter. I have told many that a Progressive is a communist. Their slogan, We get things done. Yes, they get things done alright, tearing the nation down from the top down the inside out. We lost family in Lithuania helping others flee. They were not Jewish but died in death camps anyway for helping others. Even my late Husbands family was affected by this when they ran from Germany.They lost a castle and money! Yes, I agree these kids today aren't learning anything really in school. We made sure our Daughter learned about all of this. High School she did the Christian school at home. We taught her history and about the wars and why we have Memorial Day, July 4th which is her birthday,and everything they used to teach. Here,they don't want the children to learn about the wars, it's too violent.Yet they buy them such violent video games some go out in the streets and believe they are still playing it. It's ok for children of other countries to live war,yet we are not supposed to allow our children today learn it exists. So wrong. These weak people who tolerate it all would be the 1st ones put to death by Hitler and communists,and the Isis muslims. Why? Because they are weak,stupid,and cannot be tolerated. You know this is true too. I just want you to know I remember freedom, real freedom. Not this watered down version of something I don't know. The USA have become a nation of illusionists. Giving the illusion of many things, but stand up and believe in nothing. Thank you sir for serving our Nation, fighting for our Freedoms,and I for one appreciate you.

It does bring back wonderful childhood memories from the 60s, watching TV with my grandmother, uncle, running and playing outside in the yard, riding my bike, no worry of being shot or kidnapped. Remember ‘Your FBI’ or was that what someone said at the intro of another cop show? I think that’s what it was called.

Matthews dispatched all the troopers in action to get those 2 killers. Solid on steering wheel, on strategy, also with his .38, in that county, no bandits can fool around him.

A check of Google Earth shows it's 7300 W. Melrose Ave., i.e. Melrose and Poinsettia Pl. in West Hollywood. Street View shows the intersection today. The white garage and automobile polishing shop across the street is now Summer Buffalo Cafe. Now isn't that cool? Ya salaam!

    When the dead CHP officer was found, did anyone noticed how pissed off and disgusted Matthews looked, then stormed off to go capture the killer. This shows belief is safety of the CHP and citizens and F...k the villains by killing them right away. The villain most always shot first, so the CHP had the right to defend themselves. Sometimes the villain(s) were wounded or gave up after the partner was shot. Also the brush around the burned car was not burned. These details are not really important to the theme, I enjoy the HP show very much. Sometimes logic pays off and a whole hillside doesn't go up in flames. The point was trying to obliterate IDing the vehicle. Lastly, I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and the Hollywood area and revel in the nostalgia of seeing places I recognize or the street names that quickly whiz by the cameras 'eye'. When you come across some episodes with a helicopter, check the area that the villains drive or run into. It's an old abandoned quarry used to film hundred of different movies, TV shows, and commercials. In my dad's day as a kid(30's), he used to play there. It has a tunnel to hide in. One side, the quarry side has one entrance and the other side has a three-into-one entrance. Locally, it was called Three-Way. Today one can go there and see it. It's called Bronson Cave. It's off the right side of Bronson Ave. It is below the HOLLYWOOD sign and Griffith Park Observatory

    A lot of these old early shows used a single camera, not the same camera but a scene was shot with only one camera. Notice here and in others. like westerns of the 50's, they used a lot of filler scenes. A patrol car going up the highway, around a curve, a close up of Crawford behind the wheel. Cheap to produce and since most all the scenes for Highway Patrol where shot outside,(unusual for the day like I love Lucy mostly on stage, same for the Lone Ranger, Father Knows Best etc mostly in one building on a stage with three settings), they controlled costs by using filler scenes to cut down on production and editing.

    Broderick Crawford told my father a story about a guy he knew… Tom Yorkfield, a farmer… who received a visit from his half-brother Laurence. Tom had no great liking for Laurence or respect for his profession as a portrait painter of animals. Tom showed Laurence his big prize bull and expected Laurence to be impressed, but Laurence nonchalantly told Tom that he had sold a painting of a different bull, which Tom had seen and did not like, for more than five thousand dollars. Tom got angry that a mere picture of a bull could be worth more than his real bull. This and Laurence's condescending attitude give him the urge to strike him. But Laurence ran away across a field, was attacked by Tom’s bull, and was only barely saved by Tom from serious injury. Tom looked after Laurence while he recovered and felt no more rancour because he knew that, however valuable Laurence's painting was, only a real bull like his could attack someone.

    They must have filmed the bookshop scenes in a real bookshop as it looks very authentic such as the 1926 newspaper with the news of Rudolph Valentino's passing.
    Great dialogue in this one such as when Dan tells Ms Nielsen about Larry Gardner's shady past (don't women ever learn???) Heavy set actor Gene Roth plays the part well.

    Crawford was a trained ballet dancer and his catlike moves prove he was a good one.

    The bookshop lady is one of the endearing characters I've seen in this series, and played admirably. I would like to know the name of this actress that we see in another episode. (Too bad the credits don't detail actors and characters.)
    Thanks anyone, a very successful episode.

      Sgt. MacDonald also portrayed an Idaho state trooper in a railroad safety film about car and train accidents made by Union Pacific in 1959, also based on true stories just like in *Highway Patrol* as well as in *Dragnet* and *Adam 12* - still riveting after all these years.

    Hank Patterson went on to play Fred Ziffel on "Green Acres," William Boyett later played Sgt. "Mac" MacDonald on "Adam-12," and Art Gilmore, the narrator, appeared often on "Dragnet" as one of Joe Friday's bosses, and also narrated movie trailers in the 50s.
