A lot of great actors in this smart episode, but the star, for me, (except Dan Matthews and Ken Williams, of course) is the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Four Door Sedan with no pillar. A classy and gorgeous car !
Thanks for sharing this excellent series. I watched it three times already.

That was what the crooks drove but I think if the CHP had any they would have specified having the pillar. Even in a 2 door because the "B" pillar gives a bit of rollover protection.

*Many of the actors who guest starred in this series are obscure, and never achieved any fame, even if their performances were competent. A few guest stars, like a pre-"Rawhide" Clint Eastwood, went on to major fame. And some, like the two bad guys in this episode, had solid, if not spectacular TV careers. Ed Nelson, who played the "boss" bad guy, guest starred on dozens of TV series, and also starred in the hit show, "Peyton Place". The other bad guy was played by Richard Bull, who served aboard the nuclear-powered submarine, "Seaview", under command of Admiral "Richard Basehart" Nelson. Bull played the sub's doctor on that series for four years, mustered out, then took a time machine back to the 19th century and lived on a prairie, in "Little House On The Prairie". Both actors had long careers, and each guest starred in three different episodes of "Highway Patrol", so Broderick Crawford must've liked their work.*

If you *really* wanted to live it up and go to a restaurant and a movie, that was 38 miles of driving on a twisty turny highway. There was no cable television. With rabbit ears we could pick up one station, KPIX CBS from San Francisco which was over 100 miles away. There was one law enforcement officer for three towns and that was only from 9am to 6pm. After six we had to rely on County police. There was 5 officers patrolling 3,882 square miles. That's 81 times the size of San Francisco county.

+9675775 This was a syndicated show - sold directly to local TV stations, not broadcast via the networks. Auto brand names weren't used so that all local dealers would be comfortable buying ads. No brand names meant no bad associations, just the license plate #. It was also the reason that patrol cars were various makes depending on the prop supplier/mfr agreements.

@Wooley689 thanks, so true, they were really concise in those days. In fact I had hardly watch TV now, a thirty minute program is about perfect for my attention span. The robbers had a really slick '57 Chevy, but while that car has its merits (small block Chevy V-8) I'm so glad that other now forgotten but excellent cars like the D-500 package are given a chance to be appreciated. Matthews is usually gruff, but I think he's a bit overboard on this one. He was very rude to the jeweler who was the first victim, showing no sympathy for not only being robbed but having his life threatened--only complained that his description of the perpetrators was not very helpful.

This '57 Chevy is a 4-door hardtop called the "Sports Sedan"; I do not see a convertible here. Yes the spinners were rare. You did not have triple carbs (three deuces) option in 1957; either 2 x 4 barrels (245 or 270 hp) or fuel injection (250 or 283 hp). The base 283 one 4 barrel was 220 hp.

Not all towns were incorporated and they often didn't have their own police department. One town was West Hollywood where my dad lived after he and mom divorced and so did an aunt and uncle of mine. The sheriffs dept and highway patrol handled police calls. It was finally incorporated in 1986. I live in a small town that abolished it's police dept over 50 years ago for budgetary reasons. The sheriffs department serves us.

+Dick Short As the show was syndicated to local stations, no make names were used so that all a station's local dealers would be comfortable buying ads. No make on the radio call, just plate numbers meant that no brand got tainted by association. During the blacklist period, businesses were quite sensitive.
