My first trip ever out west a few years ago and we were driving through Yellowstone Park. A huge bull was wandering care-free across the road and heading down to the shores of Yellowstone Lake. We got out and took some great shots. He didn't care at all. Then he lets out a bugle that just gave everyone chills. To have an elk do that when less than 100 yards away is just amazing.
What’s even better is when it’s pitch black out and you can here an elk bugle about two or three miles down the canyon and that sound just comes echoing towards you and makes your hair stand up
Thank you so much for posting such a fantastically filmed video. I am in the process of learning to call elk and this realistic video has helped me tremendously.
I actually have 2 visiting herds of Roosevelt Elk in my yard! The smaller herd comes in Nov the larger in Feb. I'm on the CA OR border. I totally love it. I have never heard the bugle so this is great.
Hearing the elk bugling in Rocky Mountain National Park (Estes Park on the east side, Winter Park on the west side) is haunting, fundamental, and energizing.
This is a way cool video! Every time I hear an elk bugle it is as exciting as the first time I heard one. I will never forget watching a mature bull elk in the middle of the rut bugling its head off and tearing into the rear wheel cover of a dually pickup on a friends ranch in Northern New Mexico.(The wheel cover was made of fiberglass, so he shredded it without a problem) When those bulls getting going they lose their minds!
Suppose the women are acting as though no big deal all the time observing and secretly putting claims on desired ones, it's so much fun that way.lol Another great video THANKS keep them coming you're great.😉😉😉😉😉😉👌👌👌👌👌
When it’s 4 am and they sound like they’re right outside the window it’s easy to remember how delicious elk are and wonder why they haven’t been hunted to extinction yet.
What a piercing sound. It looks like some of them had a fight with the grasslands and, I'm sorry but the racks look much better on the elks, not on someone's wall. From 3:13 to 3:16, is like a song. That's amazing.
We were in RMNP just last spring. The drive from Denver to Rocky Mountain in late spring was absolutely incredible. Sadly we did not spot any wildlife. Also, what is he doing at 1:48?
Just heard a scream like sound outside my house rn, it sounded exactly like this, I guess there were some elk in my neighborhood! I got scared for a while. Haha! Thank you for posting, truly beautiful animals
Paul Parisse We generally use 400 and 600 mm lenses. 15 to 20x magnification. Sometimes the bull elk will run within 5 to 10' of you as they are chasing other bulls.
+nameofthepen Male elk make these vocalizations mainly during the rut (mating season). They are full of testosterone which is also why they spray urine as they call out. They are marking their territory and trying to win over harems to have their offspring.
nameofthepen when a elk or anything makes a bugle, scream ECT your stomach mucles pull in and up happens in all animals even humans it's the stomach mucles pulling in that cause the bulls shafts to pull up and bounce I use to be a veterinarian saw it in bulls, rams, ECT and try to scream yourself your stomach mucles pull in and your body tucks therefore if your "junk" was on your stomach it would pull and bounce like that as well hope this helps you understand a little better why it happens
The first time I ever heard these majestic animals in real life was at RMNP and it was awesome. Minus the excessive humping the elks did to each other but that comes with the package.
Sandy and I am glad you like them. I got a shot of the 8 pups and I can send you a 10 mb picture file if you want one. You could have it printed as a 8x10. no charge just your email
if you like to hear a nice elk bugle, watch a documentary called "high, wild, and free" - 1986, at about 49min in, i heard an elk that.. well.. just go watch and listen.
hearing one of these while out in the wild is cool af

Appears that, if you're an elk, it's impossible to bugle without your junk also bouncing madly.
