One thing I don’t often consider is how much safety stuff cars in this price range come with now. Really great that more and more people have access to things like lane departure warnings, etc.
It's just a bummer they package that safety software/option with the more expensive packages rather than including that in the base model price like Tesla does. I hope other manufacturers follow Tesla's lead and give all the safety equipment/software to every model, not just the higher "option" packages.
I don’t know why you were so hard on this video in last week’s ATP. I think it’s come out really well. The audio is good and the footage is clear. I’d have liked to see more of the rear seat space in the car but apart from that you covered all the main points.
Nice review. I wonder if your opinion would be different if you reviewed some of the cars it competes with (CX-5, Rav4, etc.). It's certainly not a Volvo or BMW, but I wouldn't expect it to be. Also, as the owner of a 2016 Civic I can say that eventually you learn to understand the beeps. The most important beep is the first one that you called meaningless because it tells you if the autolock is going to work or if you will have to manually lock the car. It just comes with time.
1) I agree; I'd love to have the chance to "cross-shop" the competitors. I have a special place in my heart for Mazdas... 2) You're surely right about the beeps; I'm sure over time I'd learn to speak R2D2. 😉 But still, as a n00b, it was infuriating. 3) Thank you for making this comment like an adult and not a troll. Truly! I didn't think nice people existed on TH-cam. 😳
When you exit the car, the first beep is to tell you that you have closed the doors properly. There were many cases which I did not shut the door hard enough and so the alarm did not engage. That first beep tells me all is fine. The second beep is made when the alarm is engaged.
The beeps when you get out of the car and when you are standing next to it are caused by the walk-away lock feature. That feature is not enabled by default so the car would not beep like that normally unless someone has enabled that feature.
Hi Casey, I’ve got a 2017 Civic (very similar to the CR-V). The ‘beep for no reason’ means “all of the doors are closed, I’ll lock the car if you walk away”. It’s to reassure you that you haven’t accidentally left a door open! No idea what the frantic beeping means. I *think* it’s something like “I’m already unlocked ahhhhh leave me alooone”
Nice job Casey. Next time I'd probably wash the wheels if you're reviewing a used car. Your editing is way better than in previous videos and your intro was excellent. Looking forward to the next one.
No "no reason beep" is to let you know that you have got the key on you for the walk away lock feature. This stops people from getting out of the car and walking away with the key still in the car :) I used to work at a Honda dealer haha
Casey, another solid video - I’m glad you were able to get it published. I like to see the variety of cars you are reviewing instead of just expensive sports cars (love those, too, don’t get me wrong). I think your reviewing technique is solid!
A request for you: Review more cars in this class. This might help with the “this is not the kind of car I drive” problem. Btw, >90% of my driving experience these past 20+ years has been in 2 CR-Vs. Without you, I may never know if my next car should be a RAV4. 😜 Nice job, Casey. Keep ‘em comin’! p.s. love y’all on ATP!
Nice work, Casey. Just keep shipping the videos; each will get better. Don't worry about "regressing" like you talked about on ATP. What will matter is what videos look like in 2-3 years, and the only way to do that is just to keep shipping/practicing. The only jarring part to me was the one camera shot of you in driver seat that was flipped making it look like you were driving in UK.
Great video Casey - keep on publishing them. They'll just keep getting better & better. The footage through the window & the multi-view are great little improvements! One thing to consider is that you have the advantage of having 2 kids & 2 car seats to show how roomy the car (or is not). For example we have a CX-5 and with two car seats in the back, there is *barely* any room for someone to squeeze in that middle seat and the trunk (with a stroller) becomes small and almost unusable. I'm not sure you'd want to include this in all your videos as some may not be made to carry two kids, two car seats & stuff but an interesting angle for those looking to get a sense of if it might be there next car. Again, keep up the great work!
This video is really good, Casey. The pacing felt better, length was better, and you're getting way more comfortable on camera. All great! I did notice a couple of areas for improvement, and I hope you'll take these suggestions in the friendly and constructive manor that I intend. 1) Audio inconsistency is a major issue. Just use one mic for the whole video, even if it doesn't sound "as good". Going from one to another is very jarring, and makes the "not as good" mic(s) sound even worse. The levels are also fairly well balanced, but I found myself reaching for the volume knob up and down a few times during the video. Consistency is so important. 2) You did some really interesting shots, and they are looking great. Swooping into the back of the car and up to the driver cluster was great. But you need to employ some more creative editing techniques. Specifically, speed ramping and time changing adds a very interesting dynamic to otherwise static and "boring" shots. Though they weren't boring, just could use a little spice. Speed ramps are very easy in Final Cut Pro, and I can recommend some very good and very short tutorial videos for that if you'd like. 3) The lack of music is weird to me. It makes the video feel sort of empty. I don't think you need background music through the whole video, but some kind of music through major transition shots, and maybe at the beginning/end, would really tie the whole thing together very nicely. Even just a 10-20 second segment somewhere in the video where you have some interesting shots that time well to a musical excerpt. Aside from the audio stuff, the other two are just suggestion to add a touch of spice to the videos. I like how laid back your style is, and don't think you need to do lots of music, hypercuts and speed ramps all over the place, just a little sprinkle here and there. Anyway, I can tell you put a ton of work into this, and it shows. Your videos are getting better and better, and I can't wait to see what you do in 2019! Keep up the good work.
These are great, thanks, Perry. Some thoughts, if you care: 1) I only used two mics in this video: the lav mic that you can sometimes see on camera, and my onboard iPhone mic during the interior walkthrough. In retrospect, I wish I had used the lav during that section, even though I didn't *need* to. 2) I've gotten a nearly equal amount of feedback that the B-roll (particularly when the car is still) shots are too fast and too slow. 🤣 I'll just have to fiddle next time and see what I can come up with. 3) Yeah, I keep going back and forth on the music issue. Frankly, the #1 thing stopping me is not wanting to have to license anything. 😬
My family has 4 1st-gen CRVs (‘98-‘01) because they just keep going and going. Mine has 293k miles on it and the engine compression is still excellent, the interior trim is still good, and we’re hoping to squeeze 350k out of each of them before a massive enough repair bill moves us to a newer vehicle. I think the 3+ gen CRVs lose a lot of the charm because they just get too big and bland. But if the reliability is anywhere near what the 1st gen CRVs are, I’ll certainly consider them in the future.
Didn’t notice the car being flipped in the ‘beeping’ segment and actually found that bit to be the funniest (the beeping interrupted you, proving your point).
When you say it's the chattiest car you have driven are you just referring to the beeps or road & wind noise as well because I have heard that the cabin is very quiet
Great video. I definitely agree with everyone else that your were too hard on yourself about this video on ATP. Also, the putting the cars up on a lift is a very cool and unique touch.
Casey...I really like your videos. I agree with some of the others... You were way too harsh on yourself in last week's ATP. Keep up the awesome creativity!!
Nice review Casey. Would've liked to see CarPlay on that screen just for the contrast from the ugly stock UI. Maybe borrow an old iPhone 5s from someone's drawer. I'd be fascinated to see your take on a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, now available in the US. Plug In Hybrid EV that has a petrol engine for longer distance but around town can be EV only. Has 360 degree birds eye parking camera and adaptive cruise control etc. No CVT, single fixed ratio. CarPlay of course. Interesting, but not exciting :)
Overall I liked the video, the production value is steadily improving. The one critique I would offer is this. Understanding that this was a vehicle that someone was kind enough to loan you, the inside of the car was dirty. A quick vac of the floor mats and the hatch area should be in order before starting to shoot. Also the front wheels are quite dirty and a bit distracting. Spend and hour doing a quick cleanup of the vehicle and it will show up better on camera. Your friend will also appreciate getting back a cleaner car 😁. Keep up the good work. I like when you look at the more typical “daily driver” vehicle.
At about 6:06-6:11 there's an unpleasant noise which reminds me of interference. Aside from that you can really see how you've been coming along as a video maker, you make great stuff.
Casey, you need to try and get your hands on a new accord sport with the 2.0 turbo engine and the 10 speed auto (or even the 6 speed manual). It will shock you how good it is (and not just for the price). It makes acura sedans pointless and can haul for a big family car.
Did you intentionally mirror flip some of the shots? And what is the price difference between the Volvo and the CR-V? I feel like it would help if you had a better understanding of the intended demographic and the history of the vehicle. You’re making progress though.
Ugh, no, I honestly have no idea how I let that happen. Nor how I didn't catch it. 🤦🏻♂️ The XC90 is nearly twice the cost, and I cut a lot of the time where I discussed exactly that. However, your point is still spot-on; it does change expectations drastically.
As Phil said, no reason to be so self-critical about it. I really liked it, apart from one thing that might even be intentional, but I haven't seen in any "fancy" reviews (for obvious reasons): Because it is not a new car, it looked (just a little, don't get me wrong) filthy (or should I say used) on the inside, which distracted me for a moment. As I said, nothing major, and I can understand if someone gave your their car for review, they couldn't be expected to clean it for hours beforehand. Maybe for future reviews you could just go over the floor mats and maybe the trunk with a vacuum quickly. Apart from that, really nice. Keep going :D
I came here from Analog(ue), and yet again, I'm kind of surprised to see this face with this voice, haha! Anyway, this is a nice review! Well done Casey! Hope to see more.
Oh, just a tiny piece of feedback. I think you should have mirrored the interior shot that starts at 6:03, cause it now looks like all of a sudden you have a RHD. I'm curious to hear from you if you've intentionally mirrored this clip.
Koen That was weird for me too but Casey’s direction on motion remains constant by mirroring the earlier shot :) The overall edit has a nice flow that is starting to build his style. The use of a lift seem unique too.
A Honda CRV is not a Volvo XC90, ok got it. If you’re going to keep doing these car videos, you might want to attend a few auto shows, in order to establish the proper context for your reviews. You have a knack for finding the little things, this could be a great service to provide for your viewers. As long as , you have the appropriate context established first. Keep up the hard work. Can’t wait for the next one.
What's with the reversed video at 6:03? Really disconcerting when you get out of a right-hand drive car on the right side, but then end up on the left of a left-hand drive car!

Logan Willis A lot of cars do that now, for a fraction of the base price of the Model 3. And with way smaller panel gaps.

By far your best video yet! So many improvements!
Just bought it after 3 months of research, I’m in love!

I love this car, I'm driving the EXL and I'm loving it
Long gone and forgotten are audio issues in your videos. Fully nailed it here.
Beep!
Favourite part of the video.
I can see what you meant in ATP about learning from this one's audio, but still a great video. You beat Marco :D
James Hodgkinson idk if that was planned, but it was a great comedy bit.
Really liked this part:)
Bro.. FYI.. The beep sound is to let anyone near by be careful that the tailgate is opening or closing.. Its something good for safety
Hi Casey, I’ve got a 2017 Civic (very similar to the CR-V). The ‘beep for no reason’ means “all of the doors are closed, I’ll lock the car if you walk away”. It’s to reassure you that you haven’t accidentally left a door open!

Yeah, that's a good point. No one can fit between the seats in my car, but I can semi-comfortably do so in Erin's car.
You had the exact same reaction I did when driving my MIL's HR-V - a big giant "meh"
Great stuff Casey!
Thanks, bud! 💙
Was looking forward to this! Great job!!
I appreciated how you started it off and made good points throughout.
We want the model 3 video, don’t shelf it.

Casey, good video review, the Honda CR-V continues to deliver economic value, longterm reliability and versatility.
Really liked this video. Would you be able to give 0-60 times and handling impressions in comparison to other like vehicles? Keep up the good work!
Good job Casey. Good B roll. Getting out of the car and multi view was a nice touch
What happened to the car seat install clip? Great job overall though!
When you say it's the chattiest car you have driven are you just referring to the beeps or road & wind noise as well because I have heard that the cabin is very quiet
That "flying through the hatch to the drivers seat" shot is neat -- well done!
Only the second video of yours I’ve watched, but I for one missed the sprout seal of approval from your very first video.I’m not even joking!
Great review Casey. Why was the sunglasses holder open for all of the interior shots?
It actually isn't a sunglasses holder! It's a rearview mirror for kiddos. :) Good question though; you can see it at 7:13.
Great Job Casey, Keep them coming!
FANTASTIC video, Casey!
Great video. I definitely agree with everyone else that your were too hard on yourself about this video on ATP. Also, the putting the cars up on a lift is a very cool and unique touch.

I've [briefly!] ridden in one and it was surprisingly great. I'd love to test one sometime, if I can get my hands on one!
Good job Casey. Seems like a nice car that will do the job.
My wife ADORES her CR-V, but I’d just as soon expect you to have 2 car seats in the back if you’re using this car properly.
Did you intentionally mirror flip some of the shots? And what is the price difference between the Volvo and the CR-V? I feel like it would help if you had a better understanding of the intended demographic and the history of the vehicle. You’re making progress though.

You're forgiven, Casey :-)
Nice one Casey!
Good job man like this one a lot! At the current rate of video release I say another year or so and and Doug better watch out 😛
This makes me almost want to reconsider getting a Hyundai Veloster.. making my choices harder guy.. Just one more thing to add to the liss

I've gotten new ones since this was recorded!

Mostly echoing what John already said on ATP
- we could see still less of your face while you're talking
- but at the same time when your face is on screen I wished it were bigger because it's TH-cam?
- looking away from the road while driving makes me uncomfortable
- because we're so conditioned to having vloggy background music the complete lack of it feels a little bit strange, enough to be a little bit distracting?
- TH-cam Casey still sounds a little bit stiffer and a little bit less enthusiastic than podcast Casey, just a little bit though
Don't really care about cars but I enjoyed the video nonetheless because it's Casey talking
6:02 Casey channelling his inner Brit?
I know you borrowed this car, but it shows up as a little dirty in the video. Maybe fine for a CR-V, but would be distracting when coming to look at gorgeous cars. Nice video -- keep it up. Better all the time.
Did you just give me the Two Finger Salute? Shame on you Casey! 🇬🇧
In all seriousness, love the video!
First and primary question: Does it emit greenhouse gasses? If yes, fail.
Unless your car is being charged by 100% solar, I'd argue *every* car does. Just some fewer than others. ;)
