That phasing pulsating track in the background never ceases to amaze me and gives me goosebumps to this day. And obviously the music video is one of a kind and her voice is incredibly soothing.

    Dear Chaps (and any chapettes)
I bought this album when it first came out. "Protection" always stood out as a little special but I could not figure out why. All these years later, this song moves me to tears. Why? I am not sure. I think it is the image of someone standing in front of you to offer protection. Maybe. But repeated listens over the years has put this on my desert island discs list (along with about another 100 songs)
I would like to mention something a little special about this song. I think part of the appeal of this song is its sparse nature. You may want to give a listen to "Protection (The Eno Mix)". My feelings about Brian Eno can vary a little, but his mix of this song in my opinion is absolutely top drawer. You may not like it but for me, it gives the original version a good run for the money.
Keep up the good work chaps.
    Love as always

Thanks David. I have the same emotional response, and also am not 100% sure why,
I know what you're saying about Eno, but I tend to land on the side of genius most times. I checked out this remix and it is wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
      Cheers, Jon.

This one is a beauty, I don't own a lot of MA material but really enjoy the stuff I do know. It was 'Unfinished Sympathy' that initially spiked my interest. Cheers all!

Wonderful atmospheric track from a superb album. Better Things is my pick of the tracks on this album though

Thanks Jody. It's such a great album. There's enough brilliant tracks for people to pick from. One friend adores Heat Miser and I agree with him - until I hear another song.
      Cheers, Jon.

I feel as though everyone overlooks the masterful production of the video.
Maybe it's because it's so well done, but most of the time the characters are viewed from above with the back wall of the apartments being the floor. Somehow they seamlessly transition from that to upright and back again. There's so much clever camerawork and trickery in this video it really deserves a lot of artistic analysis on its own.

its because the set is horizontal

Michel Gondry the French film director was behind the camera and all of his music videos are stand outs for that genre. Brilliant stuff.

Love the song, great performance by Tracey Thorne, enjoyed the analysis of the lyrics which I'd never properly listened to and the delving into the arrangement and samples. Another example of Tracey effectively guesting is with 'Venceremos/ We Will Win' with Working Week and Robert Wyatt from the early '80s. Socialist latin jazz of quality!

You should play something from Blue Lines one these days. Something with Shara Nelson, perhaps.

      Hey William,
Love me some Shadow - will think about a track for the channel. Unfortunately both Andy and I know Portishead really well. 'Dummy' is one of my favourite albums ever. Maybe Andy hasn't heard the Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man album and I can sneak a track on.
      Cheers, Jon.

@@theaudiophiles7889 That would be awesome. Some early Shadow or something from Rhythm & Stealth would be cool.

This is a definite grower, I have always loved Tracy Thorn's voice. Could I perhaps nudge you towards Candyskin by The Fire Engines - a totally different vibe.

Great track. Reminds me a bit of "Talking With Myself" by Electribe 101 (1989). I'm not sure why. If you know that song - then perhaps you can tell me.

Hey Joseph, thank for your comment.
Interesting - I didn't know the track you mentioned, but I gave it a whirl. I heard a combination of EBTG Missing combined with elements of Massive Attack's first album Blue Lines. It does have that more sophisticated late 80's/early 90's dance vibe.
      Cheers, Jon.

Not really my jag, but there's a lot of well-judged "I wonder what this button does?" moments in the inner parts. Is that really a Space Invaders machine at the beginning?
I'd forgotten about EBTG, and having relistened to "Missing" I can see why.
"Now, class, do any of you use protection?" Little Johnny (for it is he) sticks up his hand. "Very good. What protection do you use - a condom, or is your girlfriend on the pill?" "Nah." "Not the withdrawal method I hope?" "Nah." "Well, what protection do you use?" "I never tell them my real name."
