John Lennon...The Man, the Memory - Last Interview Special - Dec. 8th 1980 part 2 of 6

  • On December 8, 1980, Dave Sholin and his RKO Radio crew interviewed John Lennon and Yoko Ono at their Dakota Apartment in Manhattan for over three hours. Tragically, it would be Lennon's very last interview-not one of the last-the last. He was shot dead just hours later in the very entryway of the building that Sholin and his crew had just left. Shot dead by a "fan" whom they had seen hanging around the Dakota as they left.
Sholin would receive the news after landing in San Francisco. The most incredible day of his life suddenly turned into a nightmare. Now that he had Lennon's last words in his hands, some of which were incredibly prophetic, his day lasted another three without sleep. He immediately was summoned to the station for live on-camera interviews with every news program including Good Morning America, which was going live at 4am PST (7am EST) to talk about John Lennon's tragic murder and the legacy he had left behind. The world was in deep mourning.
RKO Radio had planned to put together a fully produced radio program on Lennon based on this interview that would air the following month, but now they had just four days to get this out to a grieving public.

Ironic, how ready he was to make his comeback, he sounded so determined, and strong in his thoughts. He was so sharp at that time in his life. By the way, there are a lot of great pictures in this clip, ones that I don't recall ever seeing before. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Long live the legend of John Lennon's life. RIP

It seemed like John Lennon had a new outlook on life. I have tried to imagine what all he might have done over the years if he had not been shot. It is hard to believe he would have been in his 80's if he were still alive. 😊

I don't know about the drug part but John was also starving himself on some whacked out diet. I read that he'd drink tea and wouldn't eat anything for days and when he did eat something it was some sort of English Biscuit. In some of John's pictures he's nothing more than skin and bones...

Tearing down the mystique indeed - he and Muhammad Ali were the only celebrities of that level to make the personal choice of potentially destroying their careers for matters of principle. Of course when they were done they came back very strong. When John with Yoko came out with "Two Virgins" I did not understand at the time and I hated it. Later I did understand, he was trying to have an intellectual conversation with the public, trying to deconstruct the very concept of fame and stardom and say hey, we're just people like you. Then he continued into total realism in his next couple of records in the early 70's - reporting the news, naming names, talking about what was going on in the world rather than doing pop music. That's why Nixon tried to kick him out of the country - I've always admired that.

    • @danielbrown1724
      @danielbrown1724 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Robbie Deery that's the impact of the Beatles and Lennon. Timeless music!! I think we [Lennon fans] all feel like we knew him on a personal level, which is a very strange effect for one man to have on multiple generations past, present and future!!
I was 3 when the news of his murder hit our family back in England and I remember everything appeared in black and white for months after that. My strongest memories from that time was Starting Over, Octopuses Garden and the entire Rubber Soul LP.
To address some previous comments, Paul did have the most musicianship talent, even John recognized that, but as far as songwriting talent, they were equal. Only things that separated the two were their songwriting styles and their 2 distinctive vocal sounds.
Paul did become the unofficial manager of the group and although that wasn't ideal for everyone, that's not what broke up the band. Paul's ego is what broke up the band. Although Paul's songwriting really started to shine in '66, starting with Revolver, his desire to be front and center, dictate the bands direction, and decide what songs would make the album cut, essentially made the other 3 very resentful of him. No one wanted anything to do with Paul for a while after they disbanded in 1970. They've all said this in separate interviews. There was always a friendly competition between John and Paul, with regards to songwriting, that's how both of them exceeded the boundaries of songwriting and recording techniques, however the other 3 felt that Paul would have George Martin, and all the other engineers involved, spend way more time and effort on his own songs and on the production of his songs, than anyone else's. Perfect example is John saying he felt the production on 'I am the Walrus' and 'Strawberry Fields' were rushed and felt sloppy and thrown together as opposed to a 'Penny Lane', or 'Hello Goodbye' that John felt so much production effort and time went into and which the other Beatles were excluded from as well, like so many other McCartney songs (Eleanor Rigby, For no One, Yesterday, etc). After a while, it felt like all 3 of them were sidemen to Paul which no longer made them feel like the Beatles, but rather Paul's backup band.
So it's fine to say that, for some time, the Beatles needed Paul's leadership to keep the band going after Brian died, however he took it way too far and ended up alienating himself from the rest of the band.
Paul's ego broke up the band, not Yoko

Daniel Brown of course yoko didn't break them up how utterly retarded that it was her so stupid. what I think is freaky and bizarre is a generalized hostility towards yoko inspired by woman hating racism and people imitating woman hating racism. clashing egos is what has divided every band breaking up incidently. but Paul refusing to reject the fact that his ego (it was really clashing egos not just Paul ego but they all had one which was getting trampled by paul they felt. but they werent getting along. period). and Paul rejected in his mind that he was an issue and in his mind blamed yoko. John was changing creative partners on one level. Paul started blaming her because that was easier for him and the wider public imitated him out of adulation for him. her demonization is freakish and inspired by woman hating racicm. I love her and think she's utterly fascinating. the bed in for peace would not have happened with out her. it is a stunning feat of conceptual art/political activism which should be studied by historians, artists, students, anarchist political activists and anyone who is anti war foreve4 as a singular event. I love her. she was responsible for evolving john into a feminist and peace activist. I love her and am in awe of her and think her freakish victimization is so outrageous.

I have been a fan of Lennon almost from birth. Grew up in the 60s and had older siblings that played the music and it is deeply ingrained in me. Having said that, as a very mature woman now, it is plain to see that Lennon had an eating disorder, never really kicked drugs and was a psychological mess. He looked 60 when he died, not 40. I am astonished by how old he looked. I was young at the time and didn't see it then. wow

John did age terribly, heroin I’m sure must have serious effects on the body when you use it for 5 years as he did. Japanese seem to retain their youth at 80 Yoko looks 40 and it’s said she also used H the same time as John. He was a mess psychologically from a young age with not having a father as a constant in his life, living with his aunt, and tragically losing his mother. The formation of 4 young lads with a dream gave them all purpose. Liverpool was pretty hard living back then, so the drive to get out and do better was certainly instilled in both John and Paul, they wanted a better life. Sadly neither got what they deserved, children were their greatest gift along with the magic of their music that they gave the world. John should have come home to his roots, his family, he needed that, at this very time in his life, but fate had a different outcome planned that day. The world lost a great man, he had his challenges, but owned them and worked hard trying to resolve them. Fate just didn’t give him the time to fix what he needed to fix, thankfully forgiveness is found and heals 2 broken hearts.

While I agree with some of what you said. I fail to see why you would be astonished on his appearance in his last days. I am 41 as of the date I wrote this and while I can't say I had a life like Lennons, I often get mistaken for being quite a bit older by about 10 or 15 years older. My hair is virtually all white, and my face has roughly the same level of lines as he did in his last days. Never did illegal drugs like heroine and maybe I could eat better. So really, what is 40 supposed to look like? Men aren't supposed to be pretty. Middle age is middle age.

John Lennon was a very troubled man... he had a difficult childhood that was frequent full of pain... His father abandoned him and his Mother and was not heard from again until after John's Mom was dead, and then he only showed up when he had learned that John was a musical and financial success story.
Good role models were in short supply in John's growing-up years.
He learned to be tough and hard-nosed because he had to be to survive. He had a great deal of talent, but that didn't mitigate his troubled psyche. He and Paul were brothers in music, talent and ambition for success... but they were very different people, and Paul was from a far more positive and stable family background.
To a great extent, they sparred and help one another to grow and to find out who they were, ... as The Beatles gained success and maturity... They were, after all, only kids when they first met... and they grew up through the rough 'n tumble life of struggling musicians.
My impression is that John was filled with bitterness and yes, even hostile cruelty and violence, and he struggled to keep all that under control. He was very vulnerable when he encountered Yoko, and I will always believe that Yoko recognized that weakness and played it for all it was worth. Yes, I never liked her and thought that she used John rather cruelly... but only John's opinion of her really matters... I respect that the other three Beatles tried not to judge her too harshly out of their love for John.
I was stricken when The Beatles split up, and I knew they would likely never play together again... it was publicly known that the breakup was acrimonious and bitter. All four had individually walked out on the band and then returned... except when Paul was the last one to leave... and from that there was no going back. .... .... It was over.
so ... ... Rest in Peace, John. You didn't ask for the life you got... but you worked hard, succeeded grandly, and your end was both tragic and senseless... and we are left to only speculate what your continuing life might have been... 'Hopefully it would have been happy an' successful.
I hope your soul is at peace.

Hearing how she actually got along well with Ringo during the Beatles sessions I've heard, bootlegs and things like that, helped change my mind about her. Ultimately she's her own person anyway. Don't think John would have stayed with her for so many years if she was actually that terrible.

The 18 months he spent with her were some of the most creative times of his life. He had his only no 1 hit post Beatles. He reunited with his son Julian and most importantly Paul. According to May (whom he continued to see on and off after reuniting with Yoko) they were planning to buy a home together and were supposed to go to New Orleans to work with Paul in his new album.

He may have care for some but john was a weak and insecure person because of his life growing up. She comes john into her way of being and he let her run him. He can say all he wants but all the things she did doesn't say much for her as his wife. Especially her having john gettingctigether with may pang. She kept him away from his son Juliean for many years. I think she has treated Juliean wrong as far as not letting Juliean has some of John's belongings and money was another thing. I feel sorry for Julian . He will live with the losses if his Dad the rest of his life. He will survive because he is a much stronger person than his father was. He will survive.

Lmao CYNTHIA?! the girl who trapped him into a marriage at the start of his career ? He was in his 20s and did the right thing by marrying her but he did not love her. He resented her. She made her bed by trapping him. He was seeing his son until he moved to the states and couldn't leave and cynthia would not send julian. Until john was seperated from yoko and in California and only then after 3 yrs of no communication she shows up. He couldn't stand cynthia you all have no idea who he was

Julian sold his precious momentos and then cried for them back. Are you that stupid that you can't figure out how postcards sent to julian in London from John in Newyork ended up at auction? Did yoko slip into Cynthia's house and take it? No he sold it himself or cynthia.

On top of everything else, John was delusional;. Yoko has never been anything close to being an artist! What a slam in the faces of others who worked with him! All this BS about when they met he FAILS to mention he was MARRIED!

That's the impact of the Beatles and Lennon.

The fifteen years John and Paul were together were the most important years for personnel development. People aged 15 to 30 undergo change in every aspect of life. They go from dependent kids to mature adults who have dependent kids. It was time to end the Beatle relation for a while. Unfortunately the breakup got ugly and disrespectful in a somewhat childish way. Fortunately everybody got on with each other before death entered the scene.

John and Yoko cite the Indica Gallery meeting as their first encounter, but there is evidence to suggest that they met earlier. But that suggestion requires you to go look for yourself. If you believe that John & Yoko met for the first time at Indica, fine. The lore is intact. But if Yoko met Paul first while on the hunt for contributions forming part of a birthday present for John Cage, then what follows will blow your mind about Yoko and her intentions, all the way back in 1965/66.
