Hot pot, a bowl of boiling broth and oil in the center of the table is a very popular food all year round in China, but mostly in winter. Some say hot pot is a Mongolian invention, where many believe it to have originated in Chongqing. Today, we have the Chongqing variant, full of spicy chilis, intense flavors, and a myriad of dipping sauces. From shaved beef and lamb, to tripe and sesame balls, we try it all at this authentic Chinese hot pot restaurant in Los Angeles.

ADVChina Guys why dont you try to travel the world and document your journey. Say spend one week in india then in an arab country then south africa then europe then south america.
Arab country? I don't know about that. Some of the other areas you mentioned are super dangerous as well...
phangirlable Arabs overall cover a huge area of this world and they have their own language they extend all the way from morocco to UAE so you really cant explore the world without giving them a visit.
As for the dangers assoiated with visiting the entire world they dont really have to visit dangerous places they can simply drive around in the streets eat from local restaurants and learn from diffrent cultures stories and even religions.

Just have to add a couple of comments here. My wife and I just returned to the USA after a year in Chongqing. Chongqing is my wife's hometown. We ate huo guo at least 2 to 3 times a week. The restaurants there don't give you ladles. You use the long serving chopsticks to cook your food. The chopsticks are sterilized by holding your meat in the boiling oil. When I first arrived in Chongqing over a year ago, I had a hard time eating the goose intestines, tripe and other offal. After a while I found I actually liked them, except for the chicken feet! There is a huo guo museum and restaurant in Chongqing. According to them huo guo was invented in Chongqing by the Yangtze River boatmen. Chongqing people are very proud of this tradition, so I don't think they would like the Genghis Khan theory. Another popular meat to eat in huo guo is Spam. It's very good. I was glad to return to the USA, but I find that I really miss my Chinese family and friends in Chongqing. We will return to Chongqing sometime early next year. Love your videos.

My first hot pot was in Waikiki Beach in 1976. Sooo good! You guys have a great series going here. This could lead to the expansion of authentic Chinese food in America. I live near Louisville, Kentucky and we only have typical Chinese American restaurants here. The food choices are almost identical in every restaurant. I want to try some AUTHENTIC Chinese food. From watching channels like The Food Ranger and your channel, I learned what real Chinese food is. I will never make it to China, so it would be great to have some entrepreneur bring the real thing to my area. Stay awesome, guys!
Your story about people taking you out to eat and ordering what they thought was special struck a nerve with me. My wife is Russian, so my first Christmas with her family in Russia, her mom bought a whole sturgeon, which is a very fancy item for someone in small-town Russia. When she served that fish, she brought it out in a covered pot and set it in front of me and then pulled the lid off. I turned white as a sheet looking at this whole fish that looked like a weird eel staring at me from the pot. Her mom obviously saw how I reacted. I felt horrible for that reaction, but I couldn't help it.
Ha! I moved to Rowland Heights in 1966 when I was five years old. Grew up there through college and moved away just about the time Rowland was turning Chinese. A lot of those who immigrated to Rowland left Hong Kong because the British lease of Hong Kong from China was coming to an end and they were fearful of what may happen. It was said that many settled into this area because the telephone area code at that time was 818 and 8s were lucky.

I grew up five or six miles away from Rowland Heights and the Chinese community in the area was one of the things that inspired me to start studying Chinese in college and to study abroad in Beijing the last two summers. Your videos have helped me so much these last two years and taught me so much!

It always makes me laugh the crap that C-Milk is prepared to eat, I remember my grandad eating tripe as a kid and it turns my stomach thinking about it all these years later.
Another video that I couldn't get out of my mind, was when he ate a deep-fried pigeons head...including the frigging beak!!!

This is actually a Chinese brand and they opened a chain here in LA, owned by the same restaurant owner from China. The same restaurants in China also has the same set up with all the condiments section as well as all the free snacks! It’s exactly the same.

That was so interesting. I used to be the pastor of a church in Rowland Heights. We rented the space where the Hong Kong Supermarket is today. I lived there from 1983-1994. There were not any Chinese people that I know of in Rowland Heights back then. I go back every now and then for good Chinese food. My favorite Chinese restaurant is in Monterey Park. My son and I really enjoy your videos.

Hot Pot and Korean BBQ are both amazing dining experiences. Always fun to cook food to your exact preference. It's also fun for big groups because it makes for a long, social meal.
I lived in Auckland, New Zealand, in about 2006. My suburb became popular with Chinese, and very soon (over night!) all the signs were Chinese, (almost) all the businesses and shops, restaurants etc. The government is talking about banning overseas property investment here, because prices have become unaffordable for local people. It seems to be a specific group mainly, that have the option of moving here, and they seem less like immigrants, and more like colonists (in general ). There have been Chinese here since the 1800s and they have become integrated into our culture. I hope the new wave of Chinese will eventually do the same, because an imperial presence won't go down very well. Trust me.
They should do what Australia did in foreigners only allowed to buy newly built homes in new land.

i doubt, such an ancient civilisation naturally has a more developed cuisine, moreover the country's longitude allows for a greater variety of crops/spices/flavours and what have you.
compare food in the UK, my home country, for example. a lot simpler due to geography, and cooking methods are more basic. I think a civilisations' age and climate correlates positively with better tasting cuisine (y)

Hey welcome to my hometown! The first time I ate hotpot was with my Chinese university friends in Rowland Heights at Little Sheep about eight years ago so they had it back then in LA (I was the only non Asian in the restaurant). It is quite authentic in California with all the local Chinese but not as good as in Shenzhen still. I'm not sure what you find so surprising about everyone only speaking Chinese there. Its perfectly normal to me after living in that area for many years 😂
I feel for Winston. We were at a hotpot restaurant in Wuhan and the wonderfully gracious hostess was translating the menu for us using her smartphone. One item came up "Cow Stomach" and we couldn't decide if it was going to be beef belly meat (like where bacon is cut from except on a cow) or if it was going to be tripe. So we passed and stuck with the shrimp (which were huge and beautiful) and meatballs(but heaven knows what went into those).
My feeling on sausages or meatballs, if I can't see what's in it and the texture doesn't stand out, I'm cool. Like, chorizo is great as long as you don't think about how it contains glands and lymph nodes.

I've had hot pot in Chongqing, China at a very established restaurant. They take pride in their product. They use leftover base into their next flavoring batch each time. It has been going on for hundreds of years. You failed to mention that. It is very cultural in that region. I still appreciate all you do. Stay awesome guys!

Christopher Woo uniboil was good. But I feel like hot pot is at a craze right now even though it might not take off as well as dim sum because of the health hazards . But it’s simple enough if you have your own electric pot. Though my Chinese friends say they usually buy a base for hot pot which is a little new to me. I still make it from scratch

Did you guys really just run into that restaurant? That's amazing because it's one of the most (if not the one most) famous and authentic hotpot places in LA area. Sometimes Chinese people wait for one or two hours to eat there. I thought you guys were getting recommendations from your Chinese subscribers! And the subscriber you met at the door, his wife in the background is actually a youtuber as well haha she got some 250k subscribers on youtube and bilibili combined. 好巧啊

White guy from Utah here. My girlfriend introduced me to tripe and I genuinely do like it. She had me try it before she told me what it was and I loved it. Now everytime we have hot pot with her family, they always buy a ton of tripe for me and I eat pounds of the stuff. (Beef tripe, not a huge fan of pork tripe)

We learned the hard way in Chicago's Chinatown at a hot pot place that you can't just order whatever off the menu but it was the offal in our set we couldn't handle! Ours definitely tasted barnyardy and made the broth taste that way. (This set was the only option when getting hot pot.) The waiter came and just dumped it in for us. Repeatedly. We weren't eating fast enough for him... How nice of him! Glad it wasn't what you mentioned!
Having grown up in the San Gabriel Valley in Socal and now living in Norcal, Chinse restaurants that cater to Chinese clientele have always been abundant. It's funny to see two guys so surprised to see these communities exist in certain areas of America. Though it does make sense since one guy grew up in Upstate NY and the other in South Africa.

Agree with you Winston. hot pot in terms of flavor, is never too thrilling for me either....I always thought: "This is how young Chinese women learn to cook"..throw it all in a pot....because you have sooo many ingredients and it is time consuming and costly figuring out which combinations go best...And usually on dates, that's where we'd go...I suppose if you are observant , you can also tell a little about another's tastes by which ingredients they select....So as a social discourse, it carries weight..like you say, the experience....I'm impressed that C-Milk has a sauce combo worked out...I just keep trying different combinations...Ya know..."fail...fail...fail...that's not too bad...fail...Let me just eat this plain sauce"..It's a long process and a lot of the time, I just feel like I got nothing much to walk away with...except my time with lameizi..which is priceless

Love this series. Also, gotta say, I suddenly feel how you mean when someone calls you a foreigner in your own country. I wouldn't have noticed it before but several times now at my work, in the middle of OHIO, I've heard little kids and even an adult call me a Laowhy. I can honestly say it was confusing but ultimately hilarious.
The only hotpot I have eaten at had individual hot pots at each seat, each seating on a hot plate in front of you. You placed in your selection of food and ate it straight out of the pot. The pot started out with your selection of soup and everything was cooked by the boiling/simmering soup. I never imagined there would be a communal pot.
Totally fun and awesome (except for the chili-choking and lamb fetus). God bless America! :o)
I wouldn't recommend using the back of your chopsticks. The boiling oil will cleanse the chopsticks almost instantly, you have a much higher chance of accidentally touching the other end of your sticks and getting raw meat on your hands. Great video btw :)
Tarak I agree. It's better to dip your chopsticks in the boiling broth for a few seconds to clean them.
Actually the best way is to use a separate pair. I do hot pot all the time. I have a separate pair of chopsticks for meat.

You guys should try some hot pot restaurants in NYC - especially in Queens - many varieties (and definitely they’ve been around here more than 10 years), although they are getting more popular all the time, especially all-you-can eat ones.
Not that I was eating anything, but I'm still glad Winston told that story *after* the meal. C-Milk probably was too.

In Québec, this dish is old as the 80s and we call it "fondue chinoise" as far as I can remember (I'm in my 40s) my parents and my siblings were eating this with cheap sauces like ketchup and mayo or onions, Chili peppers and Chili sauce. I wish we can by the two sides version of the electric heater! It is part of our winter dishes with my children and we wish we could upgrade it to the authentic Chinese version! Thanks guys!

I just never got the appeal of Hot Pot, but apparently people like it because they are opening up all over. I think Hot Pot is kind of a "trend" emerging in non Chinese areas of the country.
I think they kind of hit the nail on the head, it's a social experience more than anything
I think it is popular because it is relatively cheap and the variety appeals to everyone in a group. Kind of like the salad bars or buffet bars in vegas.
In Hong Kong, when we eat hot pot, we use 2 different sets of chopsticks -- 1 pair (usually wood) for raw meat, the other pair (white plastic, don't put in hot water) for cooked meat. More hygenic. Many people get enteritis during winter months ...
This video influenced me to seek out a Hot Pot restaurant in my area. By luck Buffalo NY has one (Little Lamb on Sheridan), and it was delicious! Serpentza was TH-cam recommended to me a few weeks ago, and since then I've been binge watching your channels. I've learned so much and appreciate all your hard work.

My Chinese friend invited me to a big New Year's banquet. I was the only non-Chinese and i heard the manager asking my friend if I would be OK with the food. She told her no worries I ate everything. We had gone food shopping together and I got beondegi (Korean roasted silk worm pupae) and she was amazed I ate bugs.
