The Akimoto painting of the DC-10 in the rain has to be one of my all-time favorites. Mesmerizing and awe-inspiring masterpiece. Not just the painting, but the airplane itself too.

"INTO THE UNKOWN" Thanks Mike. Great 1956 movie recommendation. Terrific Edward's AFB views, X-Plane and contemporary jet planes in flight. Opening credits acknowledges that era's contribution to future pilots yet born.

Thanks Mike for more great stories. I got a bit wistful when you showed the United Caravelle...UAL did fly the Caravelles on regular revenue flights as well as the Men Only trips. I had the pleasure of flying once on a Caravelle, and it was the quietest cabin of any jetliner before or since. Of course if you were outside the airplane you got the experience of hearing those screaming Avons!

I am definitely going to look into George Akimoto and his work. I've been getting into watercolor painting the past few years, and the paintings in this video are absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing him with us!
Oh! and a quick edit. I so recognize the drawings of the old Northeastern Airlines planes. My mother was a flight attendant with them before they merged with Delta. She still has the NE book somewhere in her house. Unfortunately, the only photo of her in the canary yellow uniform is a black and white photo.

Building a model, taking a photo, or finishing a painting are just one frame out of the subject's life. If the story isn't in your heart it won't express itself in the artwork.

Another odd coincidence was Ivan Dixon's character on Hogan's Hero was named James Kinchloe which is very close to Ivan Kinchloe's name sort-of. Dixon played an army air force sergeant. So there is the source to Dixon's character's name.

I don't know if this counts as a co-inky-dink, but I lived 4 miles due east of Midway Airport in '63, and saw those United Caravelles fly back and forth right over my house Monday thru Friday. They had a very different sound from the 707s and 727s; I knew it was a Caravelle flying without looking up.

Actually If the golf tour you are referring to took the concorde to Rome in 1998, I believe I was the tower controller who cleared the plane for takeoff (of course the pilot asked to exceed the 250 knots limiti!) and it was the loudest plane I ever heard!

great episode Mike. I would like to share a coincidence of my own, but a tragic one. my birthday is October 1st. as a young boy I was enamored of aviation. my dad was friends with the manager of a Eastern airline booking office in a Boston hotel. he wanted to give me a special birthday gift as it was my 7th birthday.. it was a large cutaway model of a lockheed electra. they displayed them in the office so that customers could see the interior of the aircraft and pick their seat. I was in heaven.. my uncle wanted to do something for me as well, so on October 4th 1960 he took me on his boat in Winthrop Bay that was right on the end of the runway and we were watching the planes going right over our heads. we watched the Eastern Electra taking off, saw it run into a huge flock of birds, and it seemed like slow motion, the plane rolled inverted and crashed into the bay just beyond our boat. with approx 70 people on board. my memory may be off a bit, but I believe everyone perished. but in my minds eye, I can still see that plane pass over us and roll into the water... fast forward to 1980. I got married to a wonderful girl. her birthday was October 4th 1960. sad coincedence to be sure. anyway keep your great, informative episodes coming.

Out the Concorde window ... [19:57] Is that a DC-3 on the other taxiway?
I remember seeing a Caravelle coming in for landing at O'Hare when I was a Boy Scout in '62. He just broke out of low clouds at about 400' AGL. Somewhat off course if he was over the Scout Reserve. Like all Troop 160 campouts, it was another verse of 'Singin' In the Rain.' Overcast, with full precipitation. Above freezing. He was so low I could see scared faces pressed up against the portholes. It was about 5 pm, I think. Didn't hear explosions, so I guess they made it.
