- Longtime residents and city leaders in Laguna Beach are grappling with an unprecedent spike in beach tourism this summer, which has led to a surge in rescues and ordinance violations. KTLA's Chip Yost reports. July 26, 2024.

At Santa Monica beach I saw a young woman in her 20s chug her soda and throw the plastic bottle, just tossed it in the air and let it land on the sand and kept walking. There needs to be trash patrol on foot giving people fines. Unfortunately people only respond to money. You can't change trashy people to suddenly have manners and respect for nature. Yes, I picked it up and took it to the trash

When I was a kid in the 70’s, Woodsy the owl and the Indian crying about our trash were always there to indoctrinate and teach kids that the most dirtbaggity thing you could ever do in your life would be to litter. They don’t teach kids this stuff anymore.
No one goes to the beaches in LA anymore because of the crime, trash and homelessness, People on Venice Beach, Santa Monica getting randomly attacked. Thus, more and more going to Orange County beaches.

I suppose it depends on where they are coming from. If it's the inland valley directly North of Laguna then it makes sense to drive down the 133. Maybe it's the closest beach destination for them. But parking IS an issue and the 133 becomes slow as molasses in the late afternoon when you try to leave. Better bring your patience.

In my 57 years living in Orange/Santa Ana I have never seen the amount of trash like I have in the last year. On our freeway embankments, on the streets, in the bushes. People, pick up/throw away your trash. Someone tried to say it flies out of peoples cars...well, put your trash in a bag and anchor it or roll up your fricken windows. Man, people are disgusting.

I left California this year. Went I went back to visit the first thing I noticed along the 22 fwy was the trash. I couldn't believe it. Where I moved to you almost never see trash along the hwy and you constantly see work crews cleaning up. California is having budget issues. This is where you would see it.

Once I was on a beach in LA and the lady next to us was using the sand as an ashtray for her discarded cigarette butts. I politely asked her not to do it because we come to the beach to get away from that kind of stuff. She had the nerve to be annoyed with me.
When I smoked on the beach, I put all my cigarettes in a can or jar. Always doubled checked when I left. No excuse for this behavior.
Enforce the law and give them Citation for littering, CA is a lawless state, that is the problem, lol.
Interesting, when I heard about how no one was going to jail from my republican husband.. I knew 2 people that went to jail for small infractions.. recently... makes me think there's a lot of hoopla out there n not a lot of fact.

The influx of visitors to Laguna Beach is no surprise. LA County & Santa Monica have become a hell hole. So people are escaping to the OC for the last bastion of what made California so desirable.

I live in Orange County and go to the beach quite often and most of the license plates that I see in Newport and Laguna are out of state plates.

Back in the 80’s and 90’s you weren’t allowed to drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes or walk your dog on the beach. You would get cited. Dogs had their own beach and people don’t care now. The city doesn’t cite anyone for these violations. It might help to bring this back. Also, population explosion in the IE will make this a continual problem.
In the 80s you could literally smoke in a hospital, on airplanes, of course people smoked on the beach....what are you talking about?

With over 180,000 homeless in the state and crime going unhindered, what do you expect? People are moving from the dirty, crime infested beaches to where it’s clean and safe (was clean and safe). Once this beach gets overrun they will move onto the next area. That’s how it works.

That’s over 7 TIMES more than the next closest state and over 1/3 of all the homeless in the entire United States. People that visit me from other countries are shocked to see how dirty it is here and how unsafe it has become. State politicians are desperately trying to close homeless encampments statewide as they have become a serious political liability as the election nears. 30+ years ago California WAS the place that you described. It’s nowhere near that now. The nearly 1 million people that have left California during the past few years probably don’t agree with you either. We may end up losing a second seat in the House of Representatives because of so many people leaving. Retail crime has wiped out many businesses in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Lots and lots of empty retail space throughout the state. Politicians say that “overall” crime is down, BUT gun deaths and overall murders are up. Those are 2 crimes that can’t be swept under the rug because of the dead body that’s left behind. It would be better if you let your dog do the commenting from now on.

I went to visit laguna beach yesterday, yes there are beaches closer to me but they are nowhere near as clean and beautiful as laguna it is alot more taken care of I feel. It's crazy cuz I was literally talking about this yesterday where I said people ruin everything. No lie every single thing we took with us we picked up, but I have seen people go and leave their bottles at beaches trash food like people don't care. I might not live in the area but I want that beach to stay clean and beautiful that's why I drive all the way over there instead of going to beaches closer to me. People need to learn to take care of the environment. Our children are going to have to be the ones who grow and end up living in a world of trash with no beauty where most animal are extinct... Cuz let's be real most people are out here trashing the world destroying its beauty and finishing off all the beautiful creatures who live in it... it's sad!!!!

I went there in 2010 one hot 2:00 summer day-from another city in OC- my buddy and I were the only American born people on the beach. Every nation was there. Most just left their trash from that day right in the sand .

I went to Laguna once this summer. Let me tell you I picked up everything that was mine took it with me, didn't leave anything didn't trash anything. I respect nature as much as possible even when I go on hikes because I don't leave anything behind because we shouldn't be trashing things its rude and can effect the natural ecosystem

The beach is open for everyone from anywhere, just keep it clean, I just don’t like the fact that the people that live in the city feel entitled about the beach being theirs
I lived in Mission Viejo in the 80s. Laguna Beach and Dana Point were these secret places to us. We could go down there and have a strip of beach to ourselves, just a handful of us. There were lots of people further down in San Clemente but they were all kids like us. Hanging out, smoking herb, boogie boarding, surfing, eating cheap 7-Eleven hot dogs and downing Slurpee's. That strip of beaches was like our church and we revered it. I had an awesome adolescents.
This looks horrific and I couldn't imagine. No wonder the residents are getting ticked. It has to be 4-5 million to live there, at least (maybe more now) and then to have to look out at all that garbage and people packing the beach. Eww.

I remember 2 years ago ppl on tiktok saying “TAKE UP SPACE!! Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t be at a public beach!!” Referring to going to beaches like Laguna. Some expressed feeling out of place because most residents in Laguna are wealthy and they’re not but they were encouraged to show up anyway. The problem is a lot of people who grow up in poverty aren’t usually taught to be clean and organized. And others probably littered on purpose out of jealousy and hatred. I do believe some beaches should be private. I don’t live in Laguna and I’m not rich by any means but I feel bad for Laguna beach residents who used their hard earned money to buy their dream home by the beach only to see trash everywhere.
Laguna Beach used to be a resort town for gays. It always had this upscale and tranquil, sleepy, and charming air to it. Similar to Provincetown, Cape Cod Mass, Fire Island NY, Rehoboth Beach Delaware, Providence Rhode Island, Ogunquit Maine, and Ashbury Park NJ. These are all East Coast community that catered to the wealthy gay dollar. With little to no side effects of heterosexual alpha male fighting. Large extended families that leave trash behind. Or overly hogging traffic and beaches. Palm Springs also caters to the LGBTQIA community.
Unfortunately, because everybody now wants to be lumped as minority in California. They think they could walk in gay minorities shoes. How about if they display "refinement" too.
Actually it has been home to many artists as well. But I am thinking that social media has a lot to do with the influx.
