The XR 600R CDI is powered by the stator. The xr650 L CDI is powered by the battery. Basically the XR series can be made to run with or without a battery by swapping stators and CDI ‘s. The battery is used to power the lighting and starter.

It will still start without the CDI? So the stator will still generate spark without the CDI then. What system does the XR600 use?

Good little video but why? There is nearly zero electronics in these engines and CDI can be powered by a push start in the event of battery failure.
What you really want to do (with the case split) is replace the 2nd and 5th gears. Put a lower 2nd gear and a higher 5th gear. That mod will bring that bike to LIFE!!!!

Its very very hard to push start a 350 pound bike in a creek bed or tight trail(not including any extra gear); if your cdi craps out(very common on these bikes) a kick start can make all the difference of you making it back home or to camp. I highly recommend this, its very cheap considering the time it can save you being stranded and it'll up the value of your bike.

So the donor bike needs to be a xr600L?

yes but beware the XL 600s countershaft around 1987

Since the CDI is powered by the Battery ONLY, pushing it is pointless.

i thought you can bump start the xr650l with a dead battery. then you should be able to kickstart it with a dead battery?
