Mixed hi-lo is all I can say. Some countries maintain mixed fleets while others only maintain one type of fighter. The Fulcrum is supposed to be the jack-of-all-trades fighter while Flanker is designed for dominating contested airspace.
It’s competition and different design philosophies that make for top performance. Having a monopoly is inefficient, and this defense domain is still extremely important.
I've always really liked the Mig 29 series as it was the first Russian fighter to really turn the heads of the West. But the SU 35 is a superior aircraft.
the SU-35 is the latest evolution of the SU-27 after the su-30, while the MIG-35 and only an evolution of the Mig-29, are aircraft with prices and performances not comparable, a MIG-35 costs 50 million, menstre a SU-35 85 million, there are 35 million difference.

Go look for generation beck and you will find su as frogfoot call full fledge bomber. Similar to a10. Yes a10 can have air to air, but against f16 its dead. Fact wont change if you develop it more roles .
Mig35 s have been upgraded for better airframes and cost egfectiveness compared to the m29s. Likely sukhois prefered agter the cold vvar. Short take off and landable on rougher terrain. A rugged plane comparedcto many. Lovv costvmaintenance compared to many ADVERTISED ANYAY
The Mig35 is much less expensive because it does not have thrust vectoring but is easier to maintain.
The MiG 35 has greatly reduced maintenance that was one the main goals. Plus engine hours have increased from 2000 - 4000 hours.

Why do Russian aircraft fighters look like they can fly, while F-35's look like they were copied from Star Wars? Could it al be just about perception?
Wild-Weasel (SEAD/DEAD) rely on the climb-rate (aka turning radius) rather not on radar-performance. Thus the Mig-35 is important.
