Our Last Rivian Adventure | Why We Traded Our R1S

  • Our Rivian continued to have ongoing software problems. It also is too small to be practical to be our primary vehicle for our active family of six. Unfortunately, we had to move it along because it is too expensive to be our secondary vehicle and ultimately too big of a risk financially. Comparing the R1S to Chevy Suburban LS.

    Great content! I have to say I wouldn’t have found your channel if you didn’t post about your ex-R1S. 😢 Thank you for sharing your journey while short, it was riddled with obstacles. Your perspective on the whole thing was really appreciated because you’re so level headed. You weren’t raging out on Rivian enough some may think that’s warranted.

    I just purchased an R1S, coming out of an Audi Etron. Thus far, I'm having alignment issues, frunk issues and a few other things. All of this pales in comparison to the issues that I had with 3 Audi Etron over three years.
    From having to have a battery pack replaced (1st etron) to getting stranded 100 miles away from home and the etron having the whole inverter --and headlight-- replaced the NEXT day after purchasing (2nd etron) to having the entire MMI replaced, yet another inverter replaced along with the virtual cockpit (3rd etron). I am **pleased** with Rivian and how minor the issues are.
    The third row seats being an issue? I'm 6'4" and I fit back there, sitting behind myself on the second row while also sitting behind myself kn the driver seat.

      Why did you end up getting so many e-tron? We’re thinking about getting one for my dad.

    • @Zavarcerealtor
      @Zavarcerealtor 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Wasabi9111 Because, at the time, they offered the most luxury, quality of interior, charging speed and space. So we figured we could live with that since the alternatives were not up to our standards.
      But now it has been 8 months with the Rivian and all of the issues I mentioned above were addressed and never came back. But the time I've owned it does not tell the whole story, I've also driven 41k miles.
      So in 41k miles I've had minute issues when compared to the etron, and all of the issues appeared before 4k miles. So I've 37k worry-free miles.
      I'm happy

    Hard to beat the practicality and comfort of a Suburban for the family, but still rooting for the R1S. Wish they had kept the longer wheel base of R1T and did more of a stretch version of R1S, I think this would have checked more boxes for a larger family.

      Totally agree. I love my R1T but I really need 6 seats. But both the 2nd and 3rd row leg room is useless In The r1s. My husband is 6-3 and there’s no 2nd row legroom behind him. And his knees are already pushed up against the dash. We had an Ioniq 5 and surprisingly that car had a lot of legroom for everyone.

    If you have a family of 4, I would strongly recommend R1T. I have my Rivian R1T for about a year. A few service center visits fixed all of my issues. I have almost 13k miles on mine. Commuting 90 miles a day saving a ton of money. Not including breaks, oil changes and service down the road. We absolutely love our R1T. Would never go back to ice. My cost per Kwh is litlle less then 5 cents fyi 😜 ask me how 😎 Good luck with your suburban. Hope you post issues about your suburban as well. Rivian is a new company in a year they will have most issues resolved. With 10B in the bank comapny will be ok. What is your average mpg in the cold on your suburban? Real life.

    I'm curious how you got your R1S if you're far from a service center. From what I understood, they weren't allocating vehicles to people away from service centers. Did you buy it private or was this R1S your reservation? I still don't have mine yet and I've had my reservation for years and I'm only 15 minutes from a service center (and I've seen the mobile service vehicles around town). Anyways, the switch makes sense. I think the R1S will still fit my family of 4 but for 6 it makes sense you'd need something bigger.

    We only have a family of four and we got a suburban. My brother works for Rivian corporate and I conidered an R1S. However, the extra room in the suburban is well worth it and we even live in California where gas is never below $5.00/gallon. Great video and congrats on the Suburban!

    Thanks for the video. Sorry the R1S didn't work out! A few years down the road would you consider a Rivian again if they continuing scaling up and resolve some of their issues? I am assuming not due to the third row length, which may be a deal breaker for me as well.

    Thank you for your review. I also have a family of 6 and currently own a '21 GMC Yukon XL AT4. It has been a great vehicle and offers enough to use it for camping, light off-roading etc. (we do have the air suspension with variable height settings) Seating and storage space are incredible and we have enjoyed those aspects of the vehicle. For the most part, the vehicle has been great, but there are so many potential issues (with our particular model) air suspension (I have had the Yukon aligned 5 times during my ownership and been through 2 sets of tires in 38,000 miles) Auto retract running boards etc. While it does offer Apple Carplay and Android Auto, if you choose to use them wirelessly, your phone battery will drain crazy fast. Parking, handling around town etc are difficult. But again, the seating (captain chairs in our setup) is amazing and spacious. I am hoping to take delivery of the R1S by end of year and will be switching FROM the Yukon XL to the R1S and do have serious concerns about seating, storage etc. I am hoping to not be doing what you had to do for your family only after a few months. Thanks again for the review.

    Great review and experience. I have a reservation for an R1S but am now thinking of canceling given your experience as well as the fact that I’m in the more expensive price bracket. For a $100k you should expect nothing less than outstanding reliability service and driving experience. Rivian doesn’t seem quite there.

    I'm sorry you had this experience with the Rivian. Your happy with the Suburban and that's really all that matters. The cost to own that suburban though will be very large when you factor in fuel and maintenance. When we got our Rivian we knew it was a new car company with limited service options. Anyone that needs more convenient options should either wait or get something else for now. Rivian is opening more service centers but just like with Tesla in the early days...patience is required when dealing with service. I expect in 2-3 years service will be much improved and we should also have the more affordable R2 vehicles as well. Rivian is backed by some of the biggest players out there including Amazon...they aren't going anywhere.

    It’s too bad you had these issues with your R1S, they should not have happened and I can understand how frustrating it was for you. I have an R1T which had noisy half-shafts and Rivian replaced both of them with new updated ones, and now they are absolutely silent. I have had nothing but stellar service from Rivian even though the service center is a bit of a drive for me. My car is an incredible machine which I charge from the solar panels on my home, a very poetic experience! In my opinion, it’s unfortunate, that you’ve switched back to a massive ICE vehicle which is a polluting gas guzzler. The Rivian is not only more economical in the long run, as you mentioned, it also has a much smaller carbon footprint than the ICE tank, which unfortunately for many, is never a consideration. Down the line, if you were to give another Rivian EV (or other brand) a chance, I bet you would have a more positive experience.

  • @hilljond

    Good luck with your Suburban. I went from a 2016 Suburban to a Rivian R1S and it has been great. Thule rooftop box replaced the bit of extra space I lost. I couldn't have been happier to get rid of my suburban. By 95,000 mi I had put more than $20,000 in non-warranty repairs into it including a new transmission and AC condenser. I'll never own another GM product after that awful experience. Rivian is is working out some kinks in service but in my experience since June they have made huge leaps in improving that and I expect that to continue.

    So in summary, R1S too small. Coming off a decade of Ram 1500, my R1T is perfect. But I don’t have a family of 6. No technical issues after 3 mos, service center 45 min away.

  • @pearldiver7
    @pearldiver7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Good review. Sorry the Rivian didn't work out, but considering the issues you dealt with it certainly was an understandable decision. Rivian does seem to be a company more open than many of the older, more established OEM's to listening to customer feedback, so hopefully your feedback will make Rivian a stronger product/manufacturer in the future.

    I get the trade, we have a Yukon 3.0 diesel. I have an f150 Lightning as my car and we love having an EV and an ice suv. I’d like to look at Rivian in the future , but they need to fix some of their issues mostly related to being a new OEM. My Lighting as had zero issues in the one year ownership. Sorry you had to let the Rivian go.. hope you didn’t take a bath on it especially with the suburban being a slightly less MSRP.

    Too bad the R1S didn’t work out for your family. I’m currently on my way back from a trip from MN to Key West Florida in my R1S. Flawless road tripper. Before this trip I took my family up to Lutsen Skiing and visited Grand Marias. Again, performed flawless. Glad to see you’re still willing to give electric another go. Like you said though, not a lot of choices out there yet. I’ve currently put over 12k miles on mine since October, wish you could have experienced a fully functional version…although sounds like you need a little more room in the 3rd row regardless.

    Suburban is a tank compared to the R1S, so the rear seat comparison is unfair. We've had good luck with our Rivian thus far, and the drive experience is far superior to any ICE truck. Overall, your cost of ownership with the Suburban will be huge over time vs Rivian.

    It's a bit unfair to compare the R1S to a Suburban because research and facts show that the R1S is closer to the size of a Tahoe. So from jump it's to compact for a family of 6.
