    This is just awesome. The future of car mods is here!
    How many kW's can the Leaf's motor support for a brief period of time, assuming a large enough inverter and a battery that can deliver that power? In another comment you mentioned that the battery can output 300kW (with some caveats), but can the motor take that?

      @@DalasEVRepair If you look at the torque/speed graph maximun torque at low speed is about twice the full speed torque. I am thinking this is due to battery limitation, not inverter as it's current that is the issue for inverter and currnt = torque. If you can get that torque at low speed inverter can handle the torque (current) at low speed and allow the same current at highe speed you will have twice the power, so 320 kw.

    I work with inverter hw/sw development for vehicles and it makes me happy that you swap out the inverter instead of trying to tune it 🙂
    But do you know if they are programmed to control the same model of electric motor? The resolver offset parameter is the most critical one to change of course but there typically are at least 20-100 more parameters in an inverter that decides how to control the motor optimally. Motors (in this case a PM motor) differ a lot in their design such as type and size of magnets, length of rotor/stator, number of winding turns and so on. This changes things as base speed, optimal current angle and field weakening behavior.
    If you are running a motor with the wrong parameters you will not get the full torque or efficiency (less range, more heat). You can also get instability in the control loops that cause the inverter to shut down.
    Now it seems to work well for you so the motors must be quite similar. The most important factor for how much power the motor can handle is the thermal performance. The motor must have a thermal sensor that limit the performance if the motor gets too hot. But it will not cover all parts of the windings. Hopefully it will hold up if you don’t push it too hard.

      @DalasEVRepair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Hi! Yes the inverters both go to the same EM57 motor. Nissan decided to save on R&D and keep the EM57 exactly the same from 2013-2022, only the inverter has evolved. Nice to hear from someone with inverter expertise 🙌

    • @willgeorge5644
      @willgeorge5644 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DalasEVRepair I found this: "In 2018, the EM57 motor received an update with the introduction of the ZE1 Nissan LEAF. Depending on which inverter was mounted on the motor, power levels were increased to 110kW (320Nm) and on the e+ model it was further raised to 160kW (340Nm). The rpm range is also increased to 11,330 on the e+ LEAF. The motor received three tweaks:
      Slight reduction of permanent magnet material
      L-shaped coolant inlet
      Minor casting tweak to front&rear cover"

Voiko siis pelkän pääsulakkeen vaihtaa suurempaan vai johtaisiko esim 24kwh akun sulakkeen vaihtaminen suurempaan koko akuston sulamiseen?

    Hi Dala, ive done some more investigation around the 225amp fuse in the 24kwh leaf, it looks like it will handle 450amps for 60 seconds and 1000amps for one second, so essentially its there to protect the pack from a big short or a prolonged high load. So in theory a quick 8 second hit of the pedal should be fine at 160kw. Next thing to research is are the cells capable? After lots of endless sphere it looks like they will do 8c or 200kw short pulse , so 160kw should be about 6c. For 8 seconds or so when the battery is 70% and above charge state. I wonder how good the contacts are, im going to guinea pig and go for the 160kw inverter. now to find one. I suspect there will be a sweetspot of cells sag vs draw, maybe 140KW will be it. My pack is. 86% SOH and rock solid cell balance, so reasonable start point. Do you know if the late 2014 model has the fuse removable ?

    • @DalasEVRepair
      @DalasEVRepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    there was a video where Rich Rebuilds blows the fuse on his Tesla. An interesting show. These high amp fuses are basically lots and lots of low-amp fuses rolled up into one big package (because it is easier to predict how 100x10A fuses will work instead of 1x1000A). and thus they may burn out one after another. so a 1000A fuse can become a 900A fuse can become a 800A fuse can become a 700A fuse.... and one day step on GO, the thing will go pop and that was that. cannot find the video right now. so no link
    BTW: how hard is it to replace the fuse on a Leaf? Isn't it in the plug in the rear-seat floor? That would be nice. Going full petrol-head, just have a few spare fuses rattling around in the foot-well :D

    Dalla whats your thoughts on modifying a 24kwh battery for 160kw, bigger fuses ? Or is the issue the internal connections ? Someone commented 300kw unfused. Im also thinking load on the cells will cause heat issues, so maybe temperature limiting boost mode, so in theory you may only use 160kw now and then, keeping it 80kw mode most of the time. Also theres questions around the transfer case and cv joints etc, are they all the same ? Id love to have 160kw in the 24 :) some big sticky front tires of course:) it would be pretty impressive with the light pack.

      Looking at the weight , 6.9 seconds for the 1730kg with 160kw , the 24kwh with 1508kg should take the leaf down into the five seconds to 60 with the 160kw inverter, dry weather and some sticky wider front tyres. Now to find a 160kw inverter :)

      Not this way. The 2012 LEAF has an EM61 motor. All the stuff I show in this series is for the 2013+ EM57.
      One way would be to go for an aftermarket inverter, but good luck getting that to integrate with the standard LEAF VCM!

    Hey Dala! I just subbed to your channel, this is awesome! I was wondering if you can make a video to better explain HOW to do the can bridge install and programming for the car to accept the inverter. Hi,
      I have a video up here on how to install a CAN-bridge: th-cam.com/video/-gLMUeE2mXo/w-d-xo.html
      The same info can be applied to the inverter upgrade, the location is different as shown in the github page. But with this info it should be really easy to install one.
      I am hoping that Leafspy will get the resolver coding soon, if not, check out this site for more info on manual resolver offset coding: openinverter.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1895
