  • Welcome to The Best Movie You NEVER Saw, a column dedicated to examining films that have flown under the radar or gained traction throughout the years, earning them a place as a cult classic or underrated gem that was either before it’s time and/or has aged like a fine wine.
    Based on the column created by Paul Shirey and currently written by Chris Bumbray for JoBlo.com, this video version of the column features narration by Bumbray and editing by Lance Vlcek. For our sixth episode, we take a look at DEEP RISING, from director Stephen Sommers (THE MUMMY), and starring Treat Williams (PRINCE OF THE CITY) and Famke Janssen.

The fact these things could be anywhere, in the pipes, in the walls, under the floor, it made walking through the claustrophobic halls rather suspenseful. Not to mention these things are quick, it takes them no time to eat you. And speaking of which, when your eaten you don't die, your kept inside still alive while it drinks you and dissolves your body.

    My grandma took me to see this when I was 10. I don't know what brought us to the theater in January, where films go to die. But I loved it. And thanks Meme, for letting me watch way too many horror movies as a kid.

    This movie was a great hit on TV in Argentina during early 2000 ish. They would put it again and again with other hits like The Mask, MIB and Mars Attack. I had to stay up late and hide to be able to see it

    The tentacle monster was one good CGI for a movie that came out 20 years ago ! Final explosion was bad though.

    I remember seeing this movie with a group of friends when it came out. We spent the rest of the day arguing about the lead actor Treat Williams because everyone but me thought that it was Alan Thicke. We went round and round with everyone thinking I was crazy for not recognizing him as the Dad from Growing Pains.

    For some reason I taped this movie and watched it quite a few times when I was 11 or 12. None of my bootleg video tapes survive but I'd love to travel back in time to see what was in my collection. I bet there's some other forgotten gems, like Deep Rising.

    I saw this in the theater and bought it on DVD when it came out.
    This movie never got a fair assessment by critics at the time, who seemed to want it to be a more serious, epic film. But, I never saw this movie as much more than a fun popcorn flick, and it excels at that in every way.

    • @joshuagross3151
      @joshuagross3151 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always used to get Equilibrium confused with Utraviolet and Aeon Flux. They all had that gray and white super future look with intermittent bursts of colour that felt distinctly uncomfortable but at the same time, genuinely appealing. The atmospheres of all three were very similar and I'd only ever remember one of the three titles. Ah, my childhood: it's all a blur.

    As a Kid, when I first came across this movie on tv one night, soon as I saw bits of the monster, I knew I was in for a good time. Treat Williams is definitely an underrated actor, defo not enough major roles thrown his way. Crazy to think the ending was initially sequel bait for a King Kong movie, ahhhh what could have been!!! Such an awesome throwback

    P.S. As others mentioned, Ghost Ship from 2002 is also really awesome. Might add Virus from 1999 with Jamie Lee Curtis as a third kinda horror on a ship, this time 'borrowing' from The Thing.

    I saw this at the 1.50 matinee theaters after it's initial run. I had no idea what I was in for. My grandpa and I would just go to the movies and pick random movies and this was one of them. It was a great way to spend an afternoon for less than five bucks. I'm glad I got to see it in theaters, because a lot of people didn't.

    I watched this movie over and over when I was a kid. I think I was about 8 or 9 when this came out. I still have the VHS copy that we purchased as "previously view" from block buster. Not knowing the concept of the financials of movies back then that I know now, I was always waiting on a sequel to this movie from how it ended. And it was because of this movie that I became a big treat William's fan, I loved all the Substitute movies he did as a kid growing up.
