@@danielramsey6141 No, you're right, it was supposed to be the King Kong island because he was going to direct the KING KONG reboot to coincide/compete with the new GODZILLA. But when that bombed, the plan was scrapped and Sommers went off to make THE MUMMY. Peter Jackson picked up KONG and made it a retro-story. So those characters were probably going to be in the KING KONG reboot since they were already on the island, but what happened after that, we'll probably never know unless Sommers had notes and decides to share them some day.

Easily Stephen Sommers best film Behind The Mummy. Fantastic review, and a fantastic creature feature. The Treat Williams role was originally offered to Harrison Ford
Apparently, this was going to be a Harrison Ford vehicle before he dropped out. Enter Treat Williams, and I can't imagine the film without him. Props to Oliver for the Dead Heat mention, Treat *was* terrific in that!
Thanks for the retrospective! _Deep Rising_ doesn't get nearly enough attention. I still find it to be a delicious mix of humor and horror with a unique and terrifying monster. 22:23 They explain in the film that the mercenaries' prototype Chinese weapons are water-tight and have 1000-round magazines. That's why they never seem to run out of bullets.
my favorite was when they were in the machine shop of the ship "What you got there?" "Peanut" fumbling with it "...Peanut?" "Peanut!" "Okay a peanut" drops the peanut into the water "Shit!"

This falls under the category of 'throwaway movies that actually tried'. A good, recent comparison would be Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Edit - Lol without realizing it when I wrote it, both of those films feature Famke Janssen.
I loved this movie when it first came out, and still do to this day. in fact, this was one of the rare times where I didn't mind watching this in the theater multiple times (took my late father to see it as my 2nd showing)

Also, Hans Zimmer and Jerry Goldsmith are the only composers to musically capture the sheer terror of the Kraken. Hard to believe Harrison Ford was considered for the lead role. Really wish we could somehow get a sequel to this great film to show what island they landed on.

Great movie. A friend and I just bought tickets blindly and went to go see this in the theaters. What a treat!! Deep Rising and Starship Troopers excellent 90s cinema.
I saw this movie in a theatre three times on a single day as a 13 year old. The staffs in the theatre were perplexed seeing me showing up 3 times. Quite embarrassing but this movie is a part of my childhood
One thing I have always marveled at was the great stunt work. I have never thought they gave enough credit to the opening casino scene when the ship gets attacked and everyone s tossed about. Nowadays it seems most disaster scenes are shaking camera and CGI.
The 90's renaissance of "Creature Features" never gets enough props for what fun flicks came out of it... Gremlins 2, Tremors, Arachnophobia, Predator 2, Congo, Relic, Mimic, Anaconda, Deep Rising, Godzilla, Bats, Deep Blue Sea, Lake Placid and more. Some of it dumb, but always entertaining.
Great film. I love Jerry Goldsmith's score for it too, reminds me a lot of The Mummy, just more of a serious feel to it. Really interesting review and it's a shame that more people didn't review this film like you have back in the day, with a more open mind.

@@mikereger1186 ermmm, listen guys, I dont like it when you talk about my future wife like that.... *grin* ....just dont tell my current wife. ;) Some movies are just spoiled for me a character is killed off, one massive movie was XMen, when she was killed off, I lost basically all interest in the movies/story. Same for when they Killed of Rita (Julie Benz) in Dexter. Never liked the series after that and it didnt help that whoever produced it (I forget who now) just messed it up so much.
@@Not-TheOne I haven't watched the X-men movies after the first one, but I can tell you that in the comic books, characters are killed off all the time, only to return later, alive and well, sometimes as the same character from another timeline, or as a clone, or whatever the writers can think of. The same has happened with Jean Grey. If the movies are anything like the comics, she will return. edit: On second thought, after doing some reading about the movies on Wikipedia, forget it. Instead of staying true to the original stories, the damn studio executives have decided that they are better story writers, so they run the show now. According to them, the comic book X-men stories are too complex and dark for a general audience, so they changed everything. They also made Shadowcat much older than in the comics and made Bolivar Trask Black. Smh. Just more reasons for me to never watch those movies.
lol she looks and acts waaaaaay sexier here than in Goldeneye to me. Sure Xenia might be the more memorable character, but here she's sexy in a MUCH more realistic, sultry fashion. Xenia to me was super campy and smothered with makeup, but i guess that's what the role called for.
A truly wonderful film. I found it on VHS and loved it. When Simon Canton first appeared, I thought "ooh! It's Nick Nolte". Then we realised "No! It's not Nick Nolte! It's Poor Man's Nick Nolte, Gary Busey!" then "No! It's poor man's Gary Busey..." Marvellous stuff. With the machine guns, they mention that they are Chinese assault rifles with cylindrical magazines that contain 1000 bullets or something. I think they DO run out towards the end of the film though. That ending/sequel hook was WONDERFUL. I was so hoping that there would have been a sequel. RIP Treat Williams.
A good Review, O.H! This film was a recurring favorite of mine on VHS. I suppose it has a particular charm. I think your video editing and pacing has improved over time and the wrap-up here is better than those in your older videos. I am always impressed by your detailed knowledge, even about the peripheral things like the differences between CD soundtrack editions. It really shows your enthusiasm and makes it contageous. Great job!
You should cut trailers. Your endings to these films you do a retrospective of, get me so hype for the film. I almost seen this movie in theaters but at the time no one wanted to take me. But I too rented it PayPerView style and got the all day pass. Watched it at least 3 times that day. Loved it then and still do.
I agree, the endings and also the trailers at the beginning of these retrospectives are so good. Much more enjoyable than the official trailers. On the other hand, they may give away too much for someone who hasn't watched the movie yet and wants to be surprised.
Always a pleasure to see a new Oliver retrospective! I'm glad this film is now available on blu-ray in the US, but I hope there would be one for the UK markets soon! I wish Sommers stuck more to original B-movie monster features rather than the Universal Monsters (The Mummy being the exception), especially with the sequel tease at the end of the film.

Saw this at a friend of mine's place on VHS when I was a kid, we both really enjoyed it at the time. Through the years it was one of those ones I forgot about seeing until I found it used on DVD for like $4 earlier this year. Wow! Someone finally remembered this REALLY FUN gory movie! One of my favorite mid-90s guilty pleasures! An early movie from Stephen Sommers, right before he hit it big (well, sorta big, at least for a while!) with the Mummy movies...This was right up there with The Relic for my favorite dopey monster movies!
I've never seen this film but think I'll give it a watch. Sadly Derrick O Connor passed away in June of this year from pneumonia. I think many people will remember his character from the classic Time Bandits: a member of Robin Hood's Merry Men. Thanks for another good review. Actually I think I skipped this film as it may have been released in the UK around the same time as Virus which was appallingly awful and for some reason tainted this film in my mind.
I am ashamed to admit that somehow...SOMEHOW....I did not realize he played the assassin/killer of Riggs's wife in Lethal Weapon 2. Amazing what a mustache and change of accent does.
From what I can gather, the ending scene was meant to tie this film in with Stephen Sommers reboot to King Kong. The film however was scrapped due to the box office bomb that was Roland Emmerich's Godzilla, and the responsibility was given to Peter Jackson later. I find it sad that it happened because there definitely was potential with this to set up a universe. Perhaps an earlier Monsterverse was planned before the Kong film was canned, but we'll never know.
Those mini-miniguns were the highlight of the movie. Sadly never appeared anywhere else. And yes, this is a fantastic "turn your brain off just have fun" movie. Every actor in this had the time of their lives, and it shows.
Classic fun horror comedy flick that doesn’t take itself too seriously, the SFX hold up, has a decent cast and the interactions between Williams and Kevin J are a gem to watch! Great as always Oliver. I don't think I've ever sat through this movie, but saw little bits of it on TV, you know I actually say that about most movies. Judging by this review, this movie does look like a fun Saturday Matinee movie. Can't really judge it fully since I have yet to actually watch it. May want to check this out on Netflix sometime. When you're *on* a cruise ship you have a hard time knowing how everything is connected... There would be five minutes of downtime between each scene of them just walking down halls or up and down steps...
I saw this in theaters without knowing anything about it, and was really pleasantly surprised. This movie is a lot of fun. That $45 million budget surprised me, because it looks like it cost twice that. A few dodgy effects aside, this movie looks really expensive and really pretty. The cast is great, especially Famke Jansen, AKA the most beautiful woman in Hollywood.
I love this movie, it's my second favourite B monster movie behind Tremors. Other sea going monster movies are Leviathan, The Rig and the great Drunk fun Movie Grabbers. On the back of this I've ordered Inanimate and Hell's Mouth.........….Safe Journey
I had no idea this was a monster movie. I've been aware of Deep Rising for years but I always thought it was one of those end of the world disaster movies like Deep Impact. I don't remember seeing any advertising for it in the 90s so therefore just stuck with my assumption and never thought to look into it. So cheers for putting it on my radar Ollie.
Great critique..this movie is so under rated. I got to see it on the big screen, back in the day. And believe me.. it was just a real Hoot! Some movies as just made for escapism...and this one one of them. To kill 2 hours in a movie with complete strangers sitting next to you jumping and squealing was great fun. The cast was good..the score was interesting and the SPX were beautiful for this era. Really loved the cliff hanger ending...yes Kong Island or Japan's Monster's Island...Please! Still ond of my go to favorites on cold winter afternoons. Thanks for your channel..Kudos!!
Saw this theatrically and loved it. Need to give it a rewatch. I’m sure the early era digital effects have not aged gracefully. Great creature design though. Screams 90s.

I really liked this movie when I see when I was a teenager, I thing that I see a year after I had seen The Mummy, I had no idea that they were directed by the same guy. Yeah, the action was campy and the dialogue was hit and miss, but the atmosphere was top notch, and when you are doing horror, atmosphere is all what matters, more than the jump scares.
Watched this the other night as part of a month long horror/creature stream for October. Was pleasantly surprised by it, it plays out like a prototype of The Mummy, and no wonder.

I'm just curious how they planned to make a sequel for a broader audience given that they'd have to watch this to understand it and I don't see many parents letting their kids watch it. Unlike mine who, as long as a movie didn't have boobs, they didn't care what I watched. Lucked out and they gave Starship Troopers a pass cause it was just that good.
Rented this movie on your suggestion Oliver. Loved it. Exactly what you said it was. A very fun, action movie, to be enjoyed on a Friday or a Saturday night.

Saw it when it first came out. Seemed like an old fashioned but hip monster comic. It did for monster flicks what Scream did for horror. And that ending! Lost-esque, anyone?
Great video, always liked this movie since I saw it as a kid. I re-watched it about 6 months or so ago & it still holds up pretty well aside from some of the CGI. Stephen Sommers really knew how to make some damn fun movies.

The Highlander 3 video is so epicly done, he had great music to work with and used it better than so many other trailer makers.

I wish Sommers stuck more to original B-movie monster features rather than the Universal Monsters (The Mummy being the exception), especially with the sequel tease at the end of the film.

Its a fun movie filled with great quotes. Plus you should check out Southern Comfort, its not exactly horror but survival. Very underrated.

Saw this at a friend of mine's place on VHS when I was a kid, we both really enjoyed it at the time. Through the years it was one of those ones I forgot about seeing until I found it used on DVD for like $4 earlier this year. Wow! Someone finally remembered this REALLY FUN gory movie! One of my favorite mid-90s guilty pleasures! An early movie from Stephen Sommers, right before he hit it big (well, sorta big, at least for a while!) with the Mummy movies...This was right up there with The Relic for my favorite dopey monster movies!
I've never seen this film but think I'll give it a watch. Sadly Derrick O Connor passed away in June of this year from pneumonia. I think many people will remember his character from the classic Time Bandits: a member of Robin Hood's Merry Men. Thanks for another good review.
Actually I think I skipped this film as it may have been released in the UK around the same time as Virus which was appallingly awful and for some reason tainted this film in my mind.
I am ashamed to admit that somehow...SOMEHOW....I did not realize he played the assassin/killer of Riggs's wife in Lethal Weapon 2. Amazing what a mustache and change of accent does.

From what I can gather, the ending scene was meant to tie this film in with Stephen Sommers reboot to King Kong. The film however was scrapped due to the box office bomb that was Roland Emmerich's Godzilla, and the responsibility was given to Peter Jackson later.
I find it sad that it happened because there definitely was potential with this to set up a universe. Perhaps an earlier Monsterverse was planned before the Kong film was canned, but we'll never know.

Those mini-miniguns were the highlight of the movie. Sadly never appeared anywhere else.
And yes, this is a fantastic "turn your brain off just have fun" movie.
Every actor in this had the time of their lives, and it shows.
Classic fun horror comedy flick that doesn’t take itself too seriously, the SFX hold up, has a decent cast and the interactions between Williams and Kevin J are a gem to watch! That and owning it on the new Blu-ray and laserdisc makes for a fun night!

Great as always Oliver. I don't think I've ever sat through this movie, but saw little bits of it on TV, you know I actually say that about most movies. Judging by this review, this movie does look like a fun Saturday Matinee movie. Can't really judge it fully since I have yet to actually watch it. May want to check this out on Netflix sometime. When you're *on* a cruise ship you have a hard time knowing how everything is connected... There would be five minutes of downtime between each scene of them just walking down halls or up and down steps...
Such a good fun cheesy film. Loved this movie sooo much. I honestly thought the sequel hook ending was a tease for a Mysterious Island Remake.
I saw this in theaters without knowing anything about it, and was really pleasantly surprised. This movie is a lot of fun. That $45 million budget surprised me, because it looks like it cost twice that. A few dodgy effects aside, this movie looks really expensive and really pretty. The cast is great, especially Famke Jansen, AKA the most beautiful woman in Hollywood.
I loved this cast of character actors, especially Kevin o' Connor. Thanks for showing this crazy movie some love, Oliver.
I love this movie, it's my second favourite B monster movie behind Tremors. Other sea going monster movies are Leviathan, The Rig and the great Drunk fun Movie Grabbers. On the back of this I've ordered Inanimate and Hell's Mouth.........….Safe Journey

Grabbers is an underrated gem that not many people seem to know about. And the ending is a great homage to Aliens.

God, I love this movie. The gore in it, just awesome.
I had no idea this was a monster movie. I've been aware of Deep Rising for years but I always thought it was one of those end of the world disaster movies like Deep Impact. I don't remember seeing any advertising for it in the 90s so therefore just stuck with my assumption and never thought to look into it. So cheers for putting it on my radar Ollie.
Great critique..this movie is so under rated. I got to see it on the big screen, back in the day. And believe me.. it was just a real Hoot! Some movies as just made for escapism...and this one one of them. To kill 2 hours in a movie with complete strangers sitting next to you jumping and squealing was great fun. The cast was good..the score was interesting and the SPX were beautiful for this era. Really loved the cliff hanger ending...yes Kong Island or Japan's Monster's Island...Please! Still ond of my go to favorites on cold winter afternoons. Thanks for your channel..Kudos!!
Saw this theatrically and loved it. Need to give it a rewatch. I’m sure the early era digital effects have not aged gracefully. Great creature design though. Screams 90s.

@@The_Husband_of_Jane_Lane For a moment i thought you were talking about an old live action X-men movie. I was already looking forward to watching it, but it's only the animated series :(. She did voice work in some Marvel universe games as well, playing various different characters.
I really liked this movie when I see when I was a teenager, I thing that I see a year after I had seen The Mummy, I had no idea that they were directed by the same guy. Yeah, the action was campy and the dialogue was hit and miss, but the atmosphere was top notch, and when you are doing horror, atmosphere is all what matters, more than the jump scares.
Watched this the other night as part of a month long horror/creature stream for October. Was pleasantly surprised by it, it plays out like a prototype of The Mummy, and no wonder.

Yeah, the island was supposed to be Skull Island and Kong was the creature who was moving towards them. I'm just curious how they planned to make a sequel for a broader audience given that they'd have to watch this to understand it and I don't see many parents letting their kids watch it. Unlike mine who, as long as a movie didn't have boobs, they didn't care what I watched. Lucked out and they gave Starship Troopers a pass cause it was just that good.

There’s been so little development of effects since 1998 that the hallway-tentacles CGI has been reused as the meatball monsters in Star Wars 7.
Rented this movie on your suggestion Oliver. Loved it. Exactly what you said it was. A very fun, action movie, to be enjoyed on a Friday or a Saturday night.

Saw it when it first came out. Seemed like an old fashioned but hip monster comic. It did for monster flicks what Scream did for horror. And that ending! Lost-esque, anyone?
This was my guilty pleasure as a kid. Watched it with my friends at sleepovers. Still remember the guy getting digested.
Great video, always liked this movie since I saw it as a kid. I re-watched it about 6 months or so ago & it still holds up pretty well aside from some of the CGI. Stephen Sommers really knew how to make some damn fun movies.
