It was the 80s. Back then "karate" and "kung fu" was pretty much a blanket term for most Eastern martial arts in the West. And back then it was rare for people to care about it beyond how "cool" it looked.
It's interesting that Mr. Miyagi had to ask for Daniel to be left alone before the tournament. Knowing Kreese and his students, they would terrorize Danny up until the tournament so he's as soft as butter cream.
Of course, Daniel was asking for it. After harassing him, they already were leaving him alone until he sprayed water on Johnny who was minding his own business at the time.

@@mainstreetsaint36 If Daniel and Mr. Miyagi don't have licenses, it would be considered illegal for Daniel to be driving that truck especially if a police officer pulled them over, they could be arrested. Plus, if Daniel can't drive that truck back and seeing that Mr. Miyagi doesn't have a license, the police would have to tow that truck away.

At least Daniel got a driver's license later in the movie but, it's unknown if Mr. Miyagi ever got one since he was seen driving on the third film. Plus, it's amazing Mr. Miyagi owns a huge amount of cars (the ones Daniel washed and waxed) without a driver's license.
