Audi’s first foray into the world of electric cars - the e-tron - was met with a fairly lukewarm reaction from buyers. While it had all the qualities that Audi buyers expected, as an electric car, it was… well, a bit underwhelming. Inefficient, heavy and not particularly great at long distances.
The good news is that Audi has revamped its e-tron range, giving it a massive 106kWh battery option, a price rise and a new name. The company’s flagship electric SUV is now called the Q8 e-tron and has also been given improved aerodynamics, higher charging performance, and an increased range of up to 330 miles (WLTP) in the SUV and up to 343 miles (WLTP) in the slinkier Sportback.
The previous model had a choice of two battery sizes - 71 and 95kWh and a maximum range of 223 miles. The price has also risen, with the cheapest model now costing £67,800, up from the £62,785 of the outgoing model. The Sportback adds another £2,500 to the bill.
Three drivetrain options are available; all are four-wheel-drive. The Audi Q8 50 e-tron and the Audi Q8 Sportback 50 e-tron have an 89kWh (95kWh gross) battery, generate a maximum of 335bhp in boost mode and have a WLTP range of up to 281 miles in the SUV and up to 290 miles for the Sportback.
Next up is the 55 e-tron, which is also driven by two electric motors producing 396bhp. With the bigger 106kWh battery the ranges are up to 330 miles for the SUV and up to 343 miles for the Sportback.
The top-end SQ8 e-tron and Sportback e-tron, priced from £98,295, are driven by three motors. Their boost performance amounts to 496bhp, with a range of up to 284 miles for the SUV and up to 295 miles for the Sportback.
The Sportback versions are more aerodynamic and have a longer range
Charging performance has also been improved, rising from 120kW to 150kW for the lower models and 170kW for the 55 and SQ8 e-tron versions. 22kW AC charging is an optional extra.
But have the improvements made the Q8 e-tron a better car? Join Nicola as she puts the overhauled model through its paces. Has Audi got it right second time around? Let us know in the comments below.

Not quite getting the bashing of the previous E-Tron? People raved about it, great interior with unmatched quality, soft/floaty ride, noise isolation, and amazing refinement. Performance being good enough on the 50, and really quite good on the 55. The only downside to the "old" E-Tron was the range, getting around 190 ish miles on the 55 and not being very efficient. Other than that it was a better deal than its competitors, especially from BMW and Tesla.

I have a 22 Etron 55 Sportback. I bought it used with just over 15k miles on it and saved 40% on new list. Has the 21 inch alloys, super sport seats and pan roof. Its beautifully built and comfortable. It also has tons of power and is quick to charge on the rare occasion I use public chargers. Also love the added security of the Quattro and matrix lights are brilliant. I was looking at a model Y but it just felt cheap compared to the Audi.

Just got an e-Tron 55 Launch Editon MY20/21 build, with all options ticked, brand new tires, Audi refurbed all 4 wheels, detailed the car, it has most add-ons possible from factory, apart from night camera, 31k miles on the clock for £35k on PCP £0 deposit, when new the list price was £91750k lol. Sold my EV6 to get it. I did drive the Q8 e-Tron as a loan car while my car was being preperaied, had it 1 week and seen arround 3 m/kwh out of it, roughly about 280 miles or so real range being semi careful, on par with the EV6 in rela world driving. The older eTron I got is doing only 230miles on its smaller 86kwh battery. The e-Tron car shift though! in boost mode it turns into a rocketship, when the e-Tron lowers in suspension in dynamic mode never gets old. You can get the new collapsible spare from Audi for older cars, I actually picked one up at a brokers cheap, fits in the old eTron fine. Audi giving the old cars away! due to Tesla price decreases they told me....

What made you get rid of the EV6?
I'm deciding between the EV6, GV70 or E-Tron and I would think that the lower luxury interior feel of the EV6 would make me not consider it

Yup, and that’s exactly what I did. At $58k for a Prestige model, this car (the previous version) is a great deal. It’s one of the smoothest driving and most luxurious EVs on the road, and for that price in particular. I test drove a BMW iX M50, and prefer the e-tron. Better steering. Far more intuitive controls, and far nicer looking. The 2019 hasn’t ages badly. It still looks great. And that’s the key. This is a bargain if you’re willing to get it 2nd hand.

i do enjoy the presentational style, refreshing and different but I do think you need to add some context to the consumption. 1.8 miles per kW is poor but where, in the journey, did you see that range? When I switch the motors on, in my 55 etron it shows 0 miles per kW. Within 500 metres it is at 1 mile per kW, at around 2 miles, it is 1.8m per kW, after 20 miles or so it has averaged out to 2.5 miles per kW. On Saturday, I drove 346 miles on motorways, A and B roads and it returned 3 miles per kW. Over 53,000 miles, UK summer and winter, summer and winter tyres, on 21' rims, it has averaged 2.7 miles per kW. To say consumption is 1.8 miles per kw is misleading. BTW, the power was on in the car when you tried to get out of the rear - as shown by the rear climate screen being on. It takes two pulls on the handle to get out when the power is on, I believe it's a safety feature - the same applies to the front doors.

My understanding is that most EVs still have a direct mechanical connection between pedal and brake. However, they may have electronic assist with that. When you brake in such an EV you are not involving Regen in any way. On the other hand, the Audi and BMW EVs use 'blended' braking which is controlled electronically. The brakes will first use regen to start slowing the car, but if that is not enough, then actual braking begins. I think this is the 'brake by wire' the reviewer refers to.

@@Stewiedude1 The car is on my drive right now, at 74% charge and 197 miles range. That's a range of 266 miles on 100% and the Audi Gom is very accurate. It is a very popular EV despite what the short term reviewers say about range - don't get me started on charging speeds lol

I averaged 4.5 mi/kwh around Surrey over last 4 weeks on a rented 2019 version with 19 inch wheels. I always drive in D and coast till the car stops. On B roads and motorways I could get as much as 3.5 mi/kwh but sometimes when efficiency isn't a priority I get 2.8 mi/kwh. It's the sheer comfort and the isolation and of course the space this car offers. I'm in torn between this and it's little brother Q4 e tron

I’m not sure “perfectly adequate” is what Audi were going for. Certainly it’s not what comes to mind when I think of the ICE Q8 with its amazing aggressive styling, this feels like a downgrade and the exterior looks like a Vauxhall.

No one really, pretty much everything is on finance these days. People only see the 900/month or whatever this will be. Then at the end of the 3 years hand it back. If it wasn't for finance, this car would have been 45k as otherwise they wouldn't have had any sales.

I just got leased a launch edition Q8 Etron priced around 100k. What else is there to get that's electric and doesn't drive like shit. Teslas drive like complete shit. I sold my rivian cause it drove like a stiff plastic pos, took off like your strapped to a rocket though. Mercedes is getting trash reviews all around for their EQ models.
Q8 e-tron isn't the fastest but it's built like a fucking tank. Looks great. Drives like butter. Air suspension makes it pretty modular. Regen on it is perfect, does a great job reading the surroundings and adapting regen. I literally don't brake on the highway. Even when cutting up traffic, it's so intuitive it's redik. Plus I got 2 years free charging and drive around 50 miles a day. Don't even have l2 charger at home yet cause I'm rebuilding my house, free supercharging saving me 15 bucks a day.
Rates are too high but whatever. It builds my credit. I just like leasing shit. Will probably lease the rs etron refresh after this lease is up.

An obscene amount of money for transportation. How people can afford this (or want to spend so much money) when everything else in life has gone through the roof is beyond me. The winners in the electric car market will be those who offer similar size, range and comfort at half the price of something like this - the Koreans seem to be doing just that.

Cleverly adapting = changing your preferences? I don't Think So! If I set regen to full, I'd like it to stay set there. But you go ahead and pay some moron 100k to make you keep pushing the same button again and again.

    • @philhartley7551
      @philhartley7551 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

you don't need to keep pressing any button. Most of the regen comes from using the brakes in normal driving (better regen than the paddles)and only when you brake vigorously (presumably out of necessity) do the friction brakes operate.
