Merry Christmas to the Console Wars gang! Thank you for your dedication and love of retro video games. Let Santa Claus and his elves shower you with blessings on these special dates.🥳
I was a kid when this came out. It was one of my most-rented SNES games. I wish they’d re-release this on modern systems in some way, just for nostalgia’s sake. Not for nothing, but I do love the sound of horns and strings on Nintendo’s sound chip. Blew me away every time I heard those coming out of my TV, no matter the game.
Ah, the reason Hook isn't cropped on SNES is most likely because the Genesis version is running in low res mode (256x224), which the same resolution as the SNES. Most Genesis games run in its default res mode (320x224). That usually means the Genesis version released later, based on the SNES version, so it was just ported lazily without bothering to use the full resolution of the Genesis.
Wrong. The reason is simply Snes is better in graphics, screen - whatever you name It - whenever games are released separately for each system. The only times Snes is worse and cropped is when the title is released first for Genesis/amiga and cheaply ported to Snes.
This is one of my favorite games of the 16-bit era. I think the SNES version is far better than the Genesis one, but now I have the Sega CD version, so it’s my go-to now.
@@DesertRainReads The issue with majority of the CD score is that they just shoehorned in the soundtrack directly from the film, which are GREAT as standalone pieces, but it just does not fit with what's going on. For instance, why is The Banquet scene music playing while Peter's fighting The Lost Boys in level 1? The vibe is all wrong here.
Another fun episode showcasing a game that might not have been noticed else. I did enjoy the appearances of the Captains and Doctors as well, lots of fun cameos there.
Missed the ending sketch because I was watching this in the background the first time, but on my second viewing I love and appreciate the nod to Doctor Light's speech impediment.
There are a lot of sub-par games that came out on both systems left for you to review, and one highly-regarded one. The review of NHL 94 needs to happen, eventually. People are still playing that game today, just with updated and current rosters.
Super NES - no contest. I will never forget how overjoyed I was as a kid when I realized that I could fly fast by holding the run button in the air. Still love it.
3:35 I keep expecting to see Dan turn super saiyan when saying "That's it, are we doing this?!" Considering how intensely he delivers that line through each Console Wars video.
Love the tribute to Dr Light from Mega Man 8, specifically. Hook uses the same low-res 256 pixel resolution on both platforms. Probably because the SNES version was the main and the Genesis version was the port. Thus, no cropping!
Wrong. It's the opposite. Since the game WAS NOT a Genesis ported to Snes, no cropping 🤷 there is no cropping if the game is done right in Snes. Mortal Kombat 2, Super Smash TV, etc
Wow the snes version swept the genesis version and the movie Hook is such a classic Dustin Hoffman did a great job playing the captain so over the top.

My favourite Hook game was actually the Amiga version. It was a point-and-click adventure, similar in style to Monkey Island but obviously nowhere near as good. But still, it at least felt like something a bit different to do with a movie licence rather than just another platform action game which is what all the other formats got.
Merry Christmas everyone! Great episode and loved the comedy. I have Hook on the Sega CD. I wonder if Sega and Nintendo knew back that that some day 2 dude would be picking apart the differences between the same 2 games on their systems lol man the world sure has changed.
Funny thing is, I remember getting the SNES version for Christmas of '92, my brother got Top Gear that year. We got an SNES that night too. It wasn't until the following year that it got ported to the Genny. Normally I can call it when the SNES version is inferior to the Genny version. In this case, it's a runaway. The SNES version looks, plays and especially sounds better. There were missing songs on the Genny version and overall it sounded worse. I'm shocked more effort wasn't put into the Genny port. Seriously, even the Sega CD version lacks as it's basically the Genny version with a few extra things added like the orchestral soundtrack from the movie. Nice but again, the original songs from the SNES were missing and the graphics are the same as the Genny version. Yeah, even that one missed the mark. So yeah, if you want to experience this game? The SNES version of this game is the only way to go. The level theme for the winter level especially is a treat. Very ominous sounding, almost like something you'd expect from a Batman video game. It's seriously that awesome. Yeah, the game itself wasn't groundbreaking or anything, but it was a solid platformer and on the SNES it was a treat to play just for the soundtrack alone. The dash technique makes this game so much easier too. Either way though, I stand by what I said, SNES version all the way!
Truly one for the ages given the films cult following status. The games maybe short, but like the video itself the colors truly pop out in the Super Nintendo version of the game. Thanks for such an awesome video game review on a great film.
Ha! Learn this. The SNES spec was finalised before the Mega Drive spec. The SNES is a year older in terms of when it was designed. Neither are cutting edge technology though. They are both cobbled together but the Mega Drive is far more we’ll designed hardware with an emphasis on speed, not colour depth.
@burstyourbubble3500 Snes is more powerful , faster (like in Super Smash TV, Firepower 2000, etc) and can run games Genesis cannot. Genesis can't even run a Turtles in Time
@burstyourbubble3500 Snes only has strechted screen on bad ports from Genesis and Amiga. If game done right, no stretch. Look Hook, Mortal Kombat 2, Street Fighter 2, True Lies, Lawnmower Man, EarthWorm Jim 2, no streched. Genesis Cpu is not faster. Just has a higher clock.
Good video guys, but what else is new? I knew of this game, though I don't remember if I ever played it. The only Hook game I definitely played was the graphic adventure one on the Atari ST/Amiga/PC. Good times. Merry Christmas, happy holidays and happy gaming to all.
Spider-Man X-Men Arcade's Revenge😮....I am not proud, but I owned that game...or the fact I beat it. Great vid guys. His performance was just so good, with just a dash of a midlife crisis.
Nice. I'm hoping they do a Blaster Master (NES) vs Blaster Master 2 (Megadrive/Genesis) episode. Most people didn't know there was a 2 for very good reason.....
@@3xperiment8Man, the game is over hated. It's not *that* bad. Yes, it isn't a good game just mediocre and hard but a lot of games were hard back then.
Someone just mentioned to me today that while Dan has his new "Super Nintendo Always Cropped" catchphrase [and shirts], Pat doesn't really have something similar (other than maybe colours and "fart sounds", I guess"), so I just figured I'd throw the SNES Colour Blasting into the mix. You can search online for that, "What is Colour Blasting on SNES?", and it should take you right to the source with my channel name attached. ;-)
I've heard good things about the Hook game (interesting choice for this festive month) so it'll be neat to see both these versions shown off. I'm pretty sure I've heard more talk about the Mega Drive version in the past but I also think I recall something about the controls which might give the SNES version the advantage. I'll soon find out. 1:47 - I thought you said steer here but the subtitles say steal. To be fair, either line works. Cool to see all these "captain" references. 2:19 - Captain Crunch here is absolutely hilarious! 4:48 - So far, I'm think SNES has the victory in Graphics. There's the odd detail that looks better on the Mega Drive version, but it's colours seem more diluted and the SNES version has a lot of little details that shine through. The 7:08 snow level is a clear indicator of the better looking SNES version, but it's nice to see so many other weather effects as well. 9:21 - The scroll hud of the Mega Drive honestly looks better. The black indicates it's not part of the level so you don't get the feeling it's obscuring anything. Furthermore it actually looks like a scroll with with it's rolled up page ends. 15:08 - The flying does seem pretty well represented and looks quite smooth. They incorporate it well throughout the experience. There is a lot of little neat touches (like the fire following level). 16:57 - Wow; a dominant SNES victory. I'd perhaps have given a draw to Presentation but I do agree with the end results.

Thank you, guys. It's like comfort food for me.
Our pleasure!
Awesome! You guys FINALLY do a Hook episode!!
Next episode will be cool as heck! I used to play Toothbrush Tarantula vs The Machines all the time!
Another great video, guys. I've been watching you guys for years.
Game suggestions for 2024:

I bought the SNES version first & loved it. Ended up buying the MD & Mega-CD versions. Absolutely one of my favourite 16-bit games. Still have them to this day :)
The arrow making a boing, sounds more like the boing of the string I would think.
Great episode, guys! Haha, you actually maintained that OG voice actor's continuity from Mega Man 8 for Dr Light! 😅
Dr. Light, not Dr. Wily
He wasn't easy to get lol
Great episode as always i hope you had a great holiday.
Also i would like to suggest Doom Troopers for SNES and Genesis.
Another awesome Console Wars episode! Keep up the good work, guys!
Speaking of Jack Skellington.
My town became Silent Hill on Christmas Eve.
Pan is the ultimate form of Pat and Dan!!!!! Go go Power Rangers!!!!

Hey, I requested that years ago! 😊 Thank you guys for taking my request.
Merry Christmas, and happy Holidays Console Wars crew, as somebody that's only played the Hook arcade game (and I've played it a lot) I had no idea there was even a Genesis, Snes game, absolutely gonna have to check it out on the SEGA CD
Merry Christmas!
