Graphics: There may be minor details that give a sight edge with both, but not much. The cutscenes are smoother on the Genesis. The cutscenes alone win it for Sega. Presentation: The placement of the text in the cutscenes and language doesn't give much of an edge. The slowness of the cutscenes on SNES does give Genesis and edge. Sound: SNES songs do sound better than the Genesis. Genesis does have more to hear, though. Genesis is still in the lead. Gameplay: Slowdown is something to expect on SNES. A long time to save on Genesis is always dreadful (if that really happens or if these guys were just making fun of it). The smoothness of the gameplay in Genesis is better overall. Genesis wins this one. Next game is ...... ? Wait, no hint this time?

He kind of brushed aside the 24-second "saving feature" but that's like upgrading from a PS4 to a PS5 if you played on SNES. That long time to wait is no fun and is one of the main advantages cartridges or modern SSDs have. However a worse framerate is more detrimental. This felt like a Digital Foundry episode in the best way lol.
my parents got me this game on layaway, 10$ a week for like 2 months and i played for months and could never beat the final level i cannot wait to watch this ❤️

Wow, major cameo overload in this one! Always great to see the OG co-host Greg too. I would love to see him come back as co-host for a nostalgic one-off episode. I've heard a few people claim that the SNES is not actually that much slower then the Genesis. The argument is apparently that the CPU was just very different and developers didn't know how to get the most out of it. I really have to question that though, because every time games are compared the SNES version is significantly slower. You can't tell me that not a single developer knew how to get top speed out of the SNES. Even brawlers released later in the SNES' life could only handle 3 enemies on screen without slowdown. Genesis brawlers could have up to 6 or 7 enemies on screen without slowdown.
You guys definitely did not disappoint for the 100th episode. So many great moments! Dan, I gotta say though I love the way you say "Sega Genesis!" while in character. I never get tired of that!

Quite the flashback...thank you guys for being such an awesome and interesting channel to stay tuned with...since you guys made it to 100 I'll admit something to you, there are only 2 channels talking about retro video games I still regularly watch and I mean EVERYTIME there's a new episode...everyone else is a from time to time thing (you ironically featured alot of them as your cameo guests lol)...but they are the AVGN...and you guys at Console Wars...I am proud to admit that since the first episode I watched (it wasn't Aladdin your ACTUAL first episode) no I recall it was the Animaniacs one...I still crack up when I remeber "or you might be beaten by Royalty!" Well since the makers of flashback said the mega drive version is the best I think this will be an easy win for sega. Loved this game when it first came out and still play it to this day 😊

@@3xperiment8 90's me is a die hard Nontendo fan boy that finally gave 90's Sega the respect they commanded with their later Genesis titles like Shinobi 3, Phantasy Star 4 and whatnot. This was arguably one of the best and most intense generations of gaming! I ended up loving them both equally! ❤ Nontendo only gained an edge in the music/sound department.

Never have two consoles been so equally matched. Proper glory days and the plug and play nature is how things should be with a console

I had Flashback for both the SNES and the Sega Genesis back in the day and always preferred the Genesis version. The music has a darker, ominous feel and, as stated in the video, the cutscenes are butter smooth. That said the Sega CD version has grown on me quite a bit over the years. Also, the remake is meh. Stick to the retro editions. They still rock.
Man! I know I've been heaping praise on your Episodes over and over, but this has got to be your best one yet! I'd even go as far as to say it's your magnum opus! Definitely a worthy way to celebrate hitting that 100th Episode Milestone!!! Coverage of the Game itself was great! Like I said in the comments of the previous Episode, Flashback is one of the Games I've been looking forward to the most. It's one of those games I've wanted to play through, or at least watch a full playthrough of for ages, but I never got around to doing either. I did watch a playthrough of the Flashback demo for PC, covering the entire 1st Level. Thanks for showing off what Flashback has to offer in such great detail! I guess you could say that the Plot, with all the Sketches was the real star of today's Episode, rather than the Game itself. Oh boy! You've really outdone yourselves in the Plot and Sketches department! I guess I was expecting you to put in everything you got for Plot and Sketches since you're celebrating 100 Episodes, but man, this Episode has got to have the best Plot and Sketches for this Show ever! When I saw there were still about 10 minutes left when you finished the Review, I just knew you had something amazing and epic coming up. You did not disappoint there! Loved the callbacks, which certainly made me feel glad I'd seen every single Episode of Console Wars from beginning to end! Oh, and I still love the ways you find to reuse characters and costumes from past Episodes! Seeing Earthworm Jim on this Show never gets old! I also loved the Guest Appearances at the end, even though I'm not familiar with most of the Guests. I guess I liked SnesDrunk's cameo best, since he's the Guest whose stuff I've seen the most of! Oh, and Greg's cameo was great too! Oh, and that ending! Gosh, that was an excellent way to end your 100th Episode! I did see your video giving us the news of the new baby, so I think this Episode's ending was a fine way to prepare us for should be a long wait for the next Episode! Don't worry, I'm sure it'll be worth it. Phew! That's got to be my longest Comment I've posted here ever! One of my longest, at least! However, it sure felt worth the effort thinking it up and typing it out for this Episode! CONGRATULATIONS ON 100 EPISODES!!!!!!!! Here's to many more!!!
What can you expect. The Mega Drive was far ahead of it's time and despite being older than the SNES it was actually superior if you knew how to program it. The Blast Processing that many claimed it to have is actually real and it refers to the much faster CPU which made it's games playable and also helped the console produce better 3d graphics and 3d characters in 2d games.
Thank you for 100 episodes of this series. It is great to see the difference between the two consoles when it comes to talking about the same game. Best of luck to you both on future consoles wars games.

When I was young I used to always think that if there was game for SNES and Genesis the SNES version was always better. I'm starting to see that was wrong about that.
Man, 100 episodes. Thank you for so many good times... the writing was on point for this one; I enjoyed the choice of Flashback for the retrospective episode, and you did the usual amazing(ly campy) job of tying the plot together. It was good to see Greg, too. He looks healthy, and I hope he's in a great place in life. Whether there are more Console Wars to come or this is a farewell to arms, I wish you guys all the best.
Missed one form of the censorship: The reason the guards and the contestors in the Death/Cyber Tower level on SNES wore helmets was censorship, too. To make them look less like humans. All the other ports are uncensored. Jaguar has the smoothest framerate, but only the MS-DOS port has extended cinematics.
Just for fun, I gave some thought as to what you guys could do for milestone episodes such as this one, and I remembered what a shame it was that Dave had to leave Gamesack. They had the Sega vs Nintendo rivalry gimmick similar to you guys and a crossover special with both your channels seems like it would've been a no-brainer. I played the snot out of this Genesis game back in high school. Loved it! I never got too far in Out of This World, but I played this game all the way through many times. I knew the Genesis was gonna come out ahead on this one.
That was an amazing episode! Love all the fan service and cameos, definitely put a big smile on my face. And the ending absolutely nailed it for sure. Here's hoping to another 100 episodes.

4:40 - Small addition: Flashback also was released for the XBox One in the same year (2018).
I had Flashback for both the SNES and the Sega Genesis back in the day and always preferred the Genesis version. The music has a darker, ominous feel and, as stated in the video, the cutscenes are butter smooth. That said the Sega CD version has grown on me quite a bit over the years. Also, the remake is meh. Stick to the retro editions. They still rock.
Man! I know I've been heaping praise on your Episodes over and over, but this has got to be your best one yet! I'd even go as far as to say it's your magnum opus!

Like I said in the comments of the previous Episode, Flashback is one of the Games I've been looking forward to the most.
It's one of those games I've wanted to play through, or at least watch a full playthrough of for ages, but I never got around to doing either.
I did watch a playthrough of the Flashback demo for PC, covering the entire 1st Level.

I guess you could say that the Plot, with all the Sketches was the real star of today's Episode, rather than the Game itself.

I guess I was expecting you to put in everything you got for Plot and Sketches since you're celebrating 100 Episodes, but man, this Episode has got to have the best Plot and Sketches for this Show ever!
When I saw there were still about 10 minutes left when you finished the Review, I just knew you had something amazing and epic coming up.

Loved the callbacks, which certainly made me feel glad I'd seen every single Episode of Console Wars from beginning to end!
Oh, and I still love the ways you find to reuse characters and costumes from past Episodes!

I also loved the Guest Appearances at the end, even though I'm not familiar with most of the Guests.
I guess I liked SnesDrunk's cameo best, since he's the Guest whose stuff I've seen the most of!

I did see your video giving us the news of the new baby, so I think this Episode's ending was a fine way to prepare us for should be a long wait for the next Episode!

Once the calls started I was just waiting for Greg to show up.
What can you expect. The Mega Drive was far ahead of it's time and despite being older than the SNES it was actually superior if you knew how to program it. The Blast Processing that many claimed it to have is actually real and it refers to the much faster CPU which made it's games playable and also helped the console produce better 3d graphics and 3d characters in 2d games.
It was also much easier to program for.

The music in Flashback is some of the best of all 16 bit gaming. I agree with all of the points listed here.

Sega CD has a full music soundtrack that is great. Definitely THE way to play it on console.

When I was young I used to always think that if there was game for SNES and Genesis the SNES version was always better. I'm starting to see that was wrong about that.
Man, 100 episodes. Thank you for so many good times... the writing was on point for this one; I enjoyed the choice of Flashback for the retrospective episode, and you did the usual amazing(ly campy) job of tying the plot together. It was good to see Greg, too. He looks healthy, and I hope he's in a great place in life. Whether there are more Console Wars to come or this is a farewell to arms, I wish you guys all the best.

Missed one form of the censorship:
The reason the guards and the contestors in the Death/Cyber Tower level on SNES wore helmets was censorship, too. To make them look less like humans.
All the other ports are uncensored. Jaguar has the smoothest framerate, but only the MS-DOS port has extended cinematics.

I prefer the genesis for the majority of cross platform games. Something about it that I love so much more than the snes.
Just for fun, I gave some thought as to what you guys could do for milestone episodes such as this one, and I remembered what a shame it was that Dave had to leave Gamesack. They had the Sega vs Nintendo rivalry gimmick similar to you guys and a crossover special with both your channels seems like it would've been a no-brainer.

I played the snot out of this Genesis game back in high school. Loved it! I never got too far in Out of This World, but I played this game all the way through many times. I knew the Genesis was gonna come out ahead on this one.
