Phil was hands down the best character after Arnold in my opinion. I also love Gertrude too, because she's equal parts crazy and badass. Much love to Helga and Gerald too.
The interesting thing I love about Hey Arnold is while Arnold is the main protagonist in several episodes, certain episodes in the series also focuses on the other characters in the cast such as his friends, his neighbors, his grandparents and the people around his neighborhood as well as having them or Arnold deal with everyday issues that we experience in our actual lives.
Nickelodeon back then in our childhood was legitimate LIT especially the Movies in the mid 2000’s, and for Hey Arnold it really brings out a lot of information facts that deals with making friends, dealing with family issues and helping people in real world.
Hey Arnold honestly is one of VERY few shows that I would like to see a sequel series for with the characters aged as adults. I think the characters and world are so fully fleshed out that it would be interesting to pick up and explore how these dynamically diverse children grew to become adults. I even think a mini series (4-8 episodes) would be dope cause id rather see how these very symbolic 90’s kids grew to become adults of the new millennium.

Why do “Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie “and “Dora the Explorer and the lost city of Gold” have the same plot. A classic Nicktoon revival movie where the main character and their friends go to find their lost parents in an ancient Mayan and Incan inspired lost city. The villain is someone posing as the lost parents best friend to get the treasure of the lost city. There is also a romantic subplot and a third act breakup where the friends lose trust in the protagonist.
I was pointing out the same comparisons to myself when watching "Dora and the Lost City of Gold". To quote that guy from "The Incredibles", "Coincidence? I think NOT!"
I haven't seen the Dora movie but someone probably realized it but both might have been too far in development to change one or the other. You could also say that the audiences might not mix as much. Dora seems to be very kid oriented but with jokes that might make it bareable for parents (judging by the trailer iirc). While the Jungle movie seems to target older fans growing up with the show. Which I guess did work on me.
I never thought about how it’s time period affect the characters struggles and perspectives, especially compared today. Thanks for sharing. I do think that the beauty of it is not lost though as I didn’t grow up in the 90’s and never felt anything was missing from it. I also think that if they deliberately leaned into the new age, telling stories with what makes the world now different, primarily technology, it COULD work. For instance, as he mentioned in the video Helga could join an online community, but given that aggression is her learned behavior she could be given to becoming a troll. Or the classic falling in with the wrong crowd story, but told with social media. I don’t think they need to reboot it or change it but they COULD make it work.
Bro, Hey Arnold is Awesome. No Slice-of-Life Cartoon can even phase it when it comes to what this Cartoon came to be. I’m still waitin on a Reboot, Nick. Plz make it happen. PLZ...
I'm also on board for a reboot of some sort. I defintely think there are more stories to tell after the jungle movie and with the world we are living in now, I think it could adapt perfectly. But if does not include the creator of the show(Craig Bartlett), that's where I draw the line.
Arnolds Grandma and Grandpa are great parental figures and I wished I got to know my GPs before they passed on, but the short years I had with them are my most precious memories I have.
Hey Arnold is hands down the BEST cartoon in the world. Seconded by Courage. But, i have to disagree about the Grandparents bit. They both loved Arnold unconditionally and cared for him and nurtured him as 90s grandparents could. Tbh, i saw my grandparents in them.
@@Anneso1996 He's not a bad kid by any means, but he says and does some stupid things that make it hard to like him at times. That's also true for Stinky and Harold, but more so for Sid in my opinion. At least they didn't turn out like Iggy.
To be honest I really wanna see more of Arnold taking the lead and watching them go at each other. Being more assertive and rough, not letting helga escape, chasing her down. Pin her so she gonna listen to him tell her to do the right thing and be a good girl. I wanna see dark Arnold confidence and take a stand, get her all flustered, studering & mumbling her words. Arnold not giving up whenever she pushes him away or trys to distance herself from him. Arnold teasing helga, Getting her all shy& blushing, I wanna see them growing to understand one another way better. Have more heart to heart chats and for Arnold to actually see helga, because she's a complicated girl with very strong feelings/emotions, she'll go the distance for those she loves and cares about. I'd love to see Arnold secretly listening in to helga say her poems speeches of love for him, seeing him run into her on purpose to catch her and hold her hand. I would love to see Arnold taking chances to catch helga off guard to see her all bashful & flustered. Etc Helga and Arnold joining forces to cause positive impact, whenever helga tries to be chaotic, Arnold will be the the positive natural. That'll bring helga down to earth, etc
Just because something makes me feel nostalgic that doesn't mean it still isn't timeless I have nostalgia for both Pokémon & Super Mario but their both timeless. I don't have as much nostalgia for Hey Arnold! sense I didn't watch it during it's initial run on TV but it's gone on to become one of my favorite cartoons and I think it's timeless.
This show will always have a special place in a lot of peoples hearts, if you haven't watched it you have no idea what you are missing. I wish it was still extremely popular.
The Hey Arnold Jungle Movie was amazing I'm sad there weren't news of another season as we have the parents again and the relationship between Arnold and Helga finally!
10:18. Such truth , i do love Hey arnold , and i feel i need to rewatch episodes to see how much good morals abd values it instill in me without me ever knowing. 90s shows had so much Heart and Soul , i miss that in cartoons nowadays.
Omg, I read the title and thought "Ohh, that's right, it does make me feel nostalgic, but why? I never watched it" Lmao, I mean, I watched one or two episodes, but it gives me way too much nostalgic feeling to be something normal, I'm curious, so I'll watch the video now, brb. Edit: Now I get it! Good video. I want to watch the show now, it seems great.
I too haven't actually watched it when it originally aired, just caught several episodes but it didn't really stick back then. Watched it about two years ago and, well, its amazing, there might be a lot of issues with the show, don't get me wrong, but the way it creates atmosphere is something not many other shows can achieve
Nostalgia is definitely a big part of the reason why I love Hey Arnold! so much, but I can honestly say that it's just a great show all around. I do get what you said when you pointed out how the modernization that we saw take place in The Jungle Movie seemed natural, but at the same time a little out of place. That's why I think a lot of reboots of old shows, especially cartoons fall flat. People try to adapt the story to the current times, and it either feels weird or maybe even a little preachy depending on the themes and issues the reboot tries to tackle. I honestly wouldn't want a Hey Arnold! reboot because the story is already done, and I don't think there's a better way to tell it. Having said that, I do view Craig of the Creek as a kind of spiritual successor to Hey Arnold! mainly do to the fact that it's able to portray a story from a kid's point of view in this era. The way the kids interact with each other feels realistic because kids play by their own set of rules and live in their own world whenever they hang out with their friends, and the way they make use of smart phones or talk about specific pop culture references is a perfect reflection of real life.
To all who want to watch the show, ESPECIALLY if its your first time ... Please do, and I also hope you enjoy it! Just keep in mind that its the early to mid 90s in the show. Just like was mentioned in this vid a LOT of the tech taken for granted today did not exist back then. Please ALSO keep in mind that a great story, doesn't need 4k ultra realistic graphics/appearance.
I love this anaysis. Now that I’m older, it means more that Gerald had the most stable home life considering the opposite is a stereotype in black families. Also, the analysis of Harold was interesting about him being held back multiple times.
Never really appreciated this when it ran aside from Helga since she was immensely entertaining. I still do think about the random episodes of it I have seen from time to time and have actually considered re-watching it to help with my writing.
I loved hey arnold when I was little. Still do My favorite episodes are stoop kid and the haunted train. I also love the hey arnold movie.the one where Arnold and the gang have to save their neighborhood.
Hey Arnold's been the talk of the town last few month on TH-cam. I don't mind personally, as I love the show, but I wonder why so many people wanna talk about it lately.
I don't think any other cartoon on any channel at that time had so much depth to it's characters. _Avatar: The Last Airbender_ and _Gravity Falls_ are the only shows that have ever surpassed _Hey Arnold!_ in the decades since. No other has even come close. What's also remarkable is how Hey Arnold had no overarching story tying it all together. It was just a series of short stories, each a day in the life of the characters. Even Arnold's quest to find his missing parents was just one story out of hundreds told over the course of the series. That is an incredible feat, keeping the audience invested using the characters alone, with no main plot to tie everything together.
I loved Doug, Rugrats, All That, Kenan and Kel etc etc on Nick when it was at its peak..but Hey Arnold? It was always something special. I felt it as a kid. I enjoyed it a lot more..missing Hey Arnold was not an option for me. I'd sort of feel sad if I did. I could miss an episode of Doug after school? meh..I'd survive..but Hey Arnold? No way.. Looking back, I can say the directors/writers/producers of this show genuinely knew what they were doing with this. It was always something special. A huge part of my childhood..nostalgia galore to say the least.
Nickelodeon in the late 90s and early 2000s was amazing. Diverse characters, true role models and interesting stories. I wish there was more of that for today's Nickelodeon era.
I honestly think Hey Arnold is the 90's version of Steven Universe with a little less fantasy, and also the animated version of Friends. A lot of stuff from the 90's is nostalgic because we long for life to be simpler but also media from that time is sometimes problematic. Hey Arnold is top tier animation for me though - I love the feeling I get watching it.
It's been a while we saw one of the Roundtable members Avatar Icons in a video given that the last couple of videos have been largely their voices we keep hearing. Also Tom is so underrated.
This is a real show. More than a cartoon. The characters situations and locations are real. It's not three characters on almost blank background. The world presented in the show is huge and the characters are deep. It's treated like a real show.
Thank you for this video! I never watched the 2017 movie so this video got me to look it up. Really enjoyed it, it was definitely one of my favorite shows growing up and I enjoyed the sendoff.
I agree, I think Hey Arnold did a great job telling stories in the setting of the 90s. I could relate to some stories and others were good at teaching lessons or telling stories I would not have experienced in my own childhood.
Hey Arnold when it came out was current, modern. Watching it now its the 90s, the past. but I don't think it should be defined by its era. You can't just lock characters in to the 90s and not expect them to age out of it. Hey Arnold was the characters and there relationships. If you watch Peanuts cartoons you'll see the phone updated from rotary dial to push button and the typewriter replaced by the computer and even topics shifted to be more up to date. You'll see similar shifts with Muppets and Scobey Doo and you'll likely see it again in the Animaniacs reboot or if they ever reboot rugrats. You know what happens when a show tries to never change? characters don't age, they don't move forward, they don't develop and rather then be an accurate period piece, a show about the 90s created in the 2010s becomes a parody of the 90s. A messed up time line of pop stars and Jurassic Park and SNES and Pogs and Beanie Babies all jumbled in to an out of order time line. I like it when a series comes back and the 4th graders are now 5th graders or 6th graders. I like Rugrats All grown up, New Doug, might like the PPG live action reboot. I liked Young Justice's time skip. What I don't like is going back to the past and watching Captain Archer destroy Captain Picard's continuity. So yah I like the characters. giving them cell phones doesn't ruin them farther thought Hey Arnold was of its time. it was 90s because it was made in the 90s it would have been happy in any era. but Arnold doesn't surround him self with 90s. Rocket Power and Tiny Toons, these shows are the ones that are deep in the 90s. Arnold was more every man. Peanuts is a lot of the 60s and 70s and some times 80s and 90s but only because it was from the era there are no Nicktoons for the 80s or sooner since they didn't exist that far back. but there are shows like Punky Brewster that is full of 80s and Archie is full of the 50s and Loud house is full of the 2000s and is what Arnold may have been if Arnold had been a 2000s show. I wonder what shows would have worked out side there era? Like Fat Albert is very 60s/70s but that's when the show was made. and I wonder are there shows that are set in a past era that are accurate to it? I frequently see shows that are set in the past that have the edge of the 2010s and when I see modern lingo slip in to a period piece Im like, they didn't talk like that back then. I don't think we have a show that's stuck in the past. shows evolve.
Good thing I watched many episodes of Hey Arnold on RPN in the 2000s, enough for me to say it's the show that made me want to go back in the good old days. This is one of them aside from The Wild Thornberrys, As Told By Ginger, and Invader Zim.
I'd love to see a new cartoon with Hey Arnold's philosophy and truth but based on kids nowadays. I'm very curious about that, I mean I don't think today's kids are simple and empty as they are depicted in media
this show having a weird timeskip to the modern era while the characters barely aged has the same energy as everyone in cardcaptor sakura clear card having smartphones and laptops 20 years after the original run when it's only been like 3 months between them in canon
to me Hey Arnold is much better 90's Nickelodeon Cartoon way more then RugRats with it's character growths and mature themes and The Jungle Movie is a great conclusion to the series
You were a 2000s kid that caught all of the 90s shows through reruns. I am also a 2000s kids as well as I caught Hey Arnold and other 90s shows through reruns.
Hey Arnold the movie was a great addition to the series, but they left out so many plot holes that you might have thought it might be coming back. Regardless hey Arnold has been an important part of my childhood, from funny episodes to the scary ones( the headless carriage driver scared the shit out of me and still does). You would think being a kid in Tanzania the show might not have been relatable but it was.
I missed it in the years it was made. I really enjoyed this cartoon. I honestly can't say it is the best ever. To me. There is no one show that is number one..it also captures a sitcom feel. With relatable situations for a lot of kids. But..life does not work like this.i do like the fact that he is honest. And promotes doing the right thing..integrity.. has been lost in our world today. My opinion it's a good show. That's all as far as the realistic part I wish it were like that indoctrination has taken over
Im not from the 90s but I still loved to watch Arnold as a kid

I agree, I think Hey Arnold did a great job telling stories in the setting of the 90s. I could relate to some stories and others were good at teaching lessons or telling stories I would not have experienced in my own childhood.
Love your video essay thanks
So yah I like the characters. giving them cell phones doesn't ruin them
farther thought Hey Arnold was of its time. it was 90s because it was made in the 90s it would have been happy in any era. but Arnold doesn't surround him self with 90s.
The Rugrats reboot is coming out next year and it’s going to be in CGI.
I think modernizing the movie was a smart move. It's a Nik movie, more young kids were going see this than people who originally watched the show
Another great video. I'm also glad you didn't even mention that "mistake" that the writers made.
@@Anneso1996 ...yes.
Which mistake?
@@merlinmerlin9192 that one episode we all agree should've never been made.
Good thing I watched many episodes of Hey Arnold on RPN in the 2000s, enough for me to say it's the show that made me want to go back in the good old days.
This is one of them aside from The Wild Thornberrys, As Told By Ginger, and Invader Zim.
This was a 2 hour movie, and Zim was 1 hour and 10 minus and Rock was 45 minutes so it's the longest of all the revival movies!
Where all my folks at who was born in 1986 and watched hey Arnold as a kid in the 90’s
This show displayed Unity prior to that word being introduced to me. It was natural unity before the internet. Outside Fun on TV
I'd love to see a new cartoon with Hey Arnold's philosophy and truth but based on kids nowadays. I'm very curious about that, I mean I don't think today's kids are simple and empty as they are depicted in media
I was born in 2005, but the first 4 seconds of the video are so facts.
The answer : Empathy a dnnderstanding. Arnold reminds us of our past selves years ago and we can understand him
this show having a weird timeskip to the modern era while the characters barely aged has the same energy as everyone in cardcaptor sakura clear card having smartphones and laptops 20 years after the original run when it's only been like 3 months between them in canon
I love Hey Arnold so much
ack i was re-watching the grom episode from TOH for the millionth time so i missed the notification XD
Such an amazing cartoon. It’s just irreplaceable.
Nickelodeon should greenlight a 6th season of Hey Arnold! I've seen the Jungle Movie and I loved it.
Wanted to see the speech ernie gave but couldn’t fined it on your tube
to me Hey Arnold is much better 90's Nickelodeon Cartoon way more then RugRats with it's character growths and mature themes and The Jungle Movie is a great conclusion to the series
Not to mention Rocko's Modern Life with Tom kenny!
Love Hey Arnold!
YES! YES! YES, AND YES🎯🎯🎯🎯
I loved the jungle movie
Wow
Bring it back it was awesome
banana Arnold was the best Arnold that there was
Never watched Hey Arnold, and I'm an 80s kids...
I was born in '98. Does that make me a 90s kid or just a person who caught a lot of 90s reruns? 😅😅😅
That's all as far as the realistic part I wish it were like that indoctrination has taken over
Good cartoon
I love this show
I LOVED this show when I was a kid, is the Netflix movie (the theatrical movie) any good?
I loved the Hey Arnold Jungle Movie
I’ve only seen so little of it but it was pretty good from what I saw
I was a sperm cell in 1999 and was born in 2000
It was weird only seeing a few colors people but it was still really good☺️ my favorite episode was helga dressing up like a regular teenage girl
